Your Favorite Registration And Why?

Mon Mar 21, 2011 7:55 am

Hi guys,

in the thread about which registration one flew this year, one posted his favorite registration. That made me think:

What is your favorite registration and why?

My favorite is: D-ABTD as it is on my favorite B744 of LH named Hamburg.

TAP A340 CS-TOD:

The first time I flew in the cockpit of an aircraft was onboard TOD. I almost spent the entirity of a LAD-LIS flight (from taxi out to taxi in) in her cockpit, and I was a fascinated little youngster along with my brother in there. It is also the aircraft which I have flown the most to this date.

British Airways 744 G-BNLB:

One of those flights where everything from the flight buddies to the smell of the cabin, to the seat I was on was perfect. Simply a magnificent flight onboard lima bravo in September of 2008. She was sadly put in long term storage (still his) in November of that year

Sorry I could not stick to just one registration.

That would have to be G-WOWD, due to it's numerous appearances for me on ASW flights. Sadly it's now resting wfu at EXT, so I guess no more flights on it... at least for a while.

VR-HOP

Currently known as B-HOP, I dare say that this CX B744 is the one that has influenced me the most in becoming an aviation geek. I may have seen many planes around HKG before, living there in the 1980s when Kai Tak was still operational, and I had flown a couple of times before 'getting to know' VR-HOP, but this was the plane that make me go, 'wow, I want to fly on that plane'.

Way back in 1993 I flew on CX for the first time - on a B742 from PER-HKG-PER, and being only 12 at the time, I got a 'kid's entertainment pack' which included a Matchbox CX B744 in the old green and white stripes livery, and a poster of a close-up shot of VR-HOP, taken at a clever angle where the green and white striped logo on the winglet appeared immediately after the 'Cathay Pacific' titles on the fuselage on the port side, forming the CX corporate logo of the day.

I've never flown on Hotel Oscar Papa ... and probably never will. It is currently the oldest 744 still serving in CX's fleet after B-HOO was scrapped recently. I have no idea whether B-HOP is the next to go, and I have no plans to fly on a CX 744 any time soon as I simply cannot afford to. However, I'm on the hunt for a 1:400 scale model of VR-HOP in the old green and white stripes livery, so the memory will live on (albeit in 1:400 scale form).

My favorite was D-BIER, a Q200 of C9, but it is unfortunately not in service any more. All germans will understand why
At the moment, my favorite one is 9V-SPG, a 744 of SQ, cause it was my first long haul flight.

Hmm this is a tough choice to make, but I have thought about it and here it is:

N272AY - US Airways - A330-300 - I always kept seeing the US A330's at LGW, wishing to one day fly on one of them. I just love the look of the US livery on the A330. In December of last year I finally got that chance too. When we got to the gate, there it was sitting there in all its glory. Had a great flight with on N272AY to CLT.

And well also I got to put N275AY (US Airways - A330-300), the reason being that it was the first wide bodied aircraft that I got to sit next to the window and also the same reasons as mentioned above.

I always loved N757AA. One would think that this would be a B757 in the AA fleet. Nope. Its a C152 that belongs to my alma mater over at FRG LOL! I got to fly this aircraft twice as well.

This morning I saw N1, the Gulfstream IV operated by the US government and used by the Secretary of Transportation. Mr. LaHood. He visited Cessna in Wichita, KS today as part of a General Aviation rally. I was able to walk up to the wing tip and take photos.

LOL, true, but I think it has had that N# since the beginning (1977), IIRC the 757 didn't enter service until the early 80's so the winner is the C152 on this one

Midwest Airlines Boeing 717- N914ME

I don't know if it was the very first Midwest 717 I ever flew, but I've been on it at least a dozen times.

Also up there is N8553J, a 1967 Cessna 150 that a took my first flight lesson in.

C-GONR

A QK Dash-8-100. I flew it YYJ-YVR, after my (successful) interview to join the airline industry. Plus, it is just such a fantastic reg. to have on an aircraft (you're a GONR)!

C-FFYJ
C-FFYM
C-FFYT

All three are AC E190s. In my opinion, the reg's. stand for YYJ, YMM, YYT. Domestically, YYJ is the destination furthest to the west, YMM furthest to the north (at the time, YXY now holds that title), and YYT the furthest to the east. I have no idea if that is ACTUALLY why they were registered that way, but I like to think it is.

Being totally juvenile....

C-FGLY

An AC E190, speaks for itself.

If I had to have a favourite it would have to be the twin sisters "Anna & Anne". Growing up in DRW in the early 90's my Grandmother would always take me to the airport whether we were dropping people off or not. Back then Ansett had 4 727-277LR aircraft which frequented the AN58 DRW-ADL-MEL and AN155 DRW-BNE-SYD flights for me these 727's were always the highlight of the day. Two of these wore the registrations VH-ANA and VH-ANE where I got the Anna + Anne from. There was also VH-ANB and VH-ANF but I didn't have names for these. I never did manage to get a flight on Anne but in December 1994 I flew on AN58 to visit family in Adelaide and scored a ride on Anna not only was this my first unaccompanied flight but it was also my first and last flight on a 727.

Other registrations I am fond of are

VH-CZP - Ansett 737-300 featured in a lot of the promotional material then Ansett launched their Deregulation livery in 1990 a lot of the pictures I used to draw of 737-300's as a child depicted VH-CZP.

VH-OJD - Qantas 747-400 my first 747 flight also named "Brisbane" where I reside

VH-JCR - Learjet 35A I was fiddling around with the aircraft register one day searching my initials and similar combinations JCR turned out to be a Learjet which I thought was pretty cool. several years later I was sitting in a QF 737 at MEL pushing back I looked out the window at the taxiing Learjet guess which one it was???

I'd have to say that Occidental jets were one of my favorites, N20XY or N50XY. Radio telephony often heard as "Gulfstream 5 OXY!

THe very best was Union Pacifc with their HS-25's, N7UP and N8UP. They didn't so much mind the "Hawker 7 UP", but "Hawker 8 UP" didn't make them to happy!

"Terceira"

It was on this aircraft that I once flew BOS-LIS and the captain allowed me to sit up front with him and the F/O for over 3 hours on the way over. We talked about sports, women, maybe aviation, etc...

A great crew and a great vacation that followed. This was circa 2000

G-MONC ZB 757

The first real flight I remember, STN - BGR - BGI and back in 1990. We went to the cockpit, the crew were fantastic, and gave me a signed postcard of MONC. This was the beginning of the aviation bug.

I also always smile when I get on C-FUWS  (Westjet 73G)

That would be an unfortunate registration for a carrier from an English-speaking country, considering the English meaning of "bier":

a frame or stand on which a corpse or the coffin containing it is laid before burial.

There are several who come to mind, I couldn't possible narrow it down to one to mention here.
If you don't care for long stories, you may wish to stop reading now.

First I'll talk about two A320s who I dearly love from AC's fleet. - C-FNVU and C-FFWN.

C-FNVU holds a special place in my heart, because I have flown on this particular aircraft more times than any other in AC's fleet. These flights where all in the period of time where it was painted in the "Tango" colours. I took so many trips with this plane, and have made countless memories. After it was repainted back into AC colours, I saw it just one more time in YVR. I have note seen C-FNVU since 2005. Though I do have an A320 on an upcoming trip I have booked on AC, so maybe, just maybe..

But C-FFWN, the Symphony of Voices, is the aircraft which is the closest to my heart. I had an unforgettable flight with this brilliant A320 in 2004, back in a time when I had not yet discovered A.net, and my knowledge of aviation was still somewhat limited. So when I went to board my AC flight from YYT-YUL, a blindingly red A320 shining in the colours of the Canadian flag, was about the last thing I had expected to see. I had no idea what was going on! But when I boarded, I saw the familiar interior, and I knew there was no mistake. Since then, I always keep an eye out for it, sometimes just appearing as a whisper of red sailing through a low cloud. Though it has recently been repainted, I occasionally see it parked at the gate in YVR, and I am instantly reminded of all the fun times I've had trying to spot, (and sometimes even chasing after  ) this lovely bird.

And of course I could not make a post regarding my favorite of anything without mentioning Horizon Air!
I love all of the QX aircraft I've had the privileged of flying on. But the one who is coming to mind at the moment is N425QX. Though I have yet to set foot inside Skittles, I have loads of memories of the times I've been lucky enough to spot this elusive Q400!

Finally, I must mention C-GQRT and C-GWVK. The first being the Glider I flew my very first solo in,
and C-GWVK, the Cessna 150 in which I had my first solo in a powered aircraft, and achieved my PPL in.

I could go on, but..

I love these two!! I've flown on one, and have frequently spotted the other.. gotta admit I did crack up first time I saw the latter.. GONR does raise an eyebrow for an airplane too.

Mine would have to be N59SW, a Southwest 732 in the original puke color scheme. Strangely enough, this was at one time the most searched registration on anet. I think half of the country must have flown on this bird and I know that I did.

One: DL L1011-1 Fin 731.
I was 14 years old, standing at the gate watching ship 731 getting ready for departure to Atlanta, the captain is standing by the terminal window smoking a cigarette. I struck up conversation about how great the L1011 was and how it was my favorite airplane. I also mentioned that I was a civil air patrol cadet, well the captain asked me if i'd like to see the cockpit? (Hell) YEAH! i said, without the H-word. So, he walks me over to the gate and escorts me up the jetway, takes me into the cockpit and tells me to take a seat in the captain's chair and dont touch anything. I sat there for probably 15 or 20 minutes while the captain finished his smoke and did the walk around and I asked questions of the crew, who were very nice and very accomodating about explaining everything while also making sure i didn't touch anything. It is an experience I'll remember for the rest of my life. I then got up, thanked the crew for their hospitality and made my way off and watched her depart.

Two: N620US, NW 747-135
This was my first of 25 747s. In 1985, at age 17, i took my first trip to Europe as part of a school-sponsored group. 620 was our chariot across the pond from Minneapolis to Gatwick. I remember 620 still had the upstairs lounge because the F/As announced it was open after takeoff. Ship 620 represented many firsts: my first 747, first trip abroad, first flight over four hours. I wouldn't say it was a great experience, but it was memorable just in being my first ever 747.

Three: N33785, CO 727-232
In the early 90s I was on my way to Florida with my mother when i had the good luck to fly on this beast. She was still decked out in the hybrid people express colors with the Continental titles and still had the full people express leather interior. Those seats were the most comfortable i've ever sat in. to top off the experience, we did a high speed powerback that pinned me to the back of my seat. The moment the engines started at the gate, my face widened into a cheap grin from ear to ear, then the pilots put the pedal to the metal and rocketed us backwards out of the gate before slamming to a stop on the tarmac. I loved every minute of it. I also seem to recall that the captain put the pedal to the metal during the flight, we made it from Houston to Palm Beach pretty quick IIRC. Love the 727, greatest aircraft ever, IMO.
Yes, I'd like to see airbus go under so Boeing can have their customers!
