Whats Your Favourite Airport?

Mon Mar 21, 2011 8:41 pm

Hello A.netters!

What is your favourite airport and the reason being?

Mine is CLT because the airport looks amazing and there is so many places to see the planes etc... Very unlike airports here in the UK (well LGW anyway). I travelled to CLT for the first time on US from LGW on the 28th Dec 10 and returned on the 4th Jan 11.

Btw I also I hope to travel back there soon and see the US A320 which went into the Hudson at the CLT aviation museum.

Mine would definitely have to be FRA. I grew up in Germany and FRA was my home airport. I would always be so excited because as a kid going to FRA usually meant that I was heading back to the USA to visit family... Plus FRA is famous for the number of different airlines and aircraft movements... The interior is amazing and I always loved watching those famous old school flip boards that displayed the flights arriving and departing... Hope they never get rid of them... Display monitors are NOT the same...   Once as a teenager when my parents had to go do something in the city, they literally just dropped me off at Terminal 1 for 4 or 5 hours just so I could get my dose of aviation and FRA. I spent the entire time just walking around the airport exploring every little nook and cranny that I could find. Spent lots of time riding the tram from T1 to T2 and also a lot of time at the McDonalds in T2 watching the planes land and take off... God I loved that place...   Now I'm back in the US and won't be headed back to Germany any time soon...

Munich when it comes to Europe. In particular Lufthansa´s Terminal 2. It is nice and modern and tidy, there are nice shops and quite good views of the apron. I transfer through MUC a lot and always find it hugely convenient. Even transfers of 30 minutes are never a problem, neither for me nor for my luggage. Excellent airport.

I am similar with you but at LGW, I go there for hours upon hours just enjoying the airport. I bet you had many great times at FRA! I would love to visit that airport sometime, sounds great.

Yeah I have seen some pics of Munich before, it does look really great. Maybe I should think about going to Germany and having a look at a few airports there myself.

ICN. Hands Down.

Huge, clean, airy, spacious airport. Hardwood floors on the gate areas, never over crowded and super efficient. The best transfer I've ever made and the staff were polite and friendly.

As for the US, SFO and TPA tops my list.

On the other hand, I'm also a big fan of JFK... PURELY because it's my home airport and from a spotter's perspective, it's great - lots of international airlines and widebody A/C!

I was in NYC at Christmas, sadly I never made it to JFK. I only got the chance to go to EWR and LGA. When I go back to NY, my mission is definitely got to be going to JFK.

Cheers for the replies, interesting to know what airports you love.

I haven't been to CLT for many years even though I have family in North Carolina, but these days I always seem to fly into either RDU or GSO when I go to visit. From what I remember of CLT though is that it was a clean, airy terminal that always smelled of popcorn!!

Looking at your profile LGWflyer, I don't know if you're old enough to remember the viewing terrace at LGW with its reasonable views, cafeteria and fairly good aviation shop? At one time they also installed a HP Herald up there too and I think the nose of an old Comet. Happy days! I remember bunking off school one day and heading down to LGW on the train...I arrived on the viewing terrace just as Braniff's big orange 747 landed...it made all the guilt worthwhile! Although the strange thing is that I was still wearing my school uniform and not a sole questioned why an 11 year old was alone on the viewing terrace in his school uniform during school hours!

Anyway, if you'd asked me the question 10 years ago I would have said GCI...I used to love the old terminal with its nice little rooftop viewing terrace and its easy-going nature, but they pulled that terminal down and built a shiny new one which, although nice, just isn't the same. Not that there was a great deal of interesting visitors though, I'm just a big Guernsey fan!

So I guess my answer now has to be LHR. I live a mile from T5 these days so it's my home airport too, although there was a time when I would always prefer LGW over LHR, but LGW's just not the same to me now as it was when I were a lad!

PLH in England. Plane seat to car seat in 30 seconds, five minutes from my front door by road, and only about 20-30 mins if I have to walk it.

You should 100% get yourself back to CLT! US Airways do quite a good deal from LGW to CLT. Yep the airport is still the same as what you said, nice and clean etc.

Yeah I can still just about remember the spotters viewing area above Pier 2. My dad has worked at LGW since I was small so I have been up the since I was small. I remember the aviation shop, my dad got me 2 planes from there. From what he said it was quite expensive, I think they also had a WHSmith up there too. I remember the old aircraft which was up there, never got to go on it though. Last time I heard the plane is currently right down at the end of the airport near the fire station. If only the spotters bit was still up there now I probaly would be at LGW double than what I am already haha. One thing which does stick clearly in my mind of the spotters area was seeing the NWA DC-10's on the satelitte from up there.

Yes I agree with you 100%! After nearly all the American carriers left it wasn't the same, now LGW is full of orange!

Now that sounds like the perfect airport! I have been to NQY and was sort of similar. Off the plane, straight into the terminal, collect your bags then off you go.

Yeah it was a lot of fun... Now my home airport is pretty much IAH... Nothing against IAH (great airport BTW) but the endless stream of CO jets whether it's 737s or Embraers gets old quick. I also fly a lot out of DFW but they're not much better with the seemingly endless stream of AA MD-80s... Sure FRA had a lot of LH obviously but they had enough different models and different airlines serving the airport to always make it a different experience each time I went there...

Yeah quite a few airports are mostly full of just one or so airlines. Not so good for spotting trips but hey, the heavies make up for it!

Here at LGW there are alot of different airlines but one very orange airline dominates here and that is easyJet.

My thoughts exactly!! I remember a time when LGW was the place to go to see unusual and exciting airlines and aircraft! The one and only time I saw a Comet take to the skies was at LGW (belonging to Dan Air who, at the time, I thought were Danish  ) as well as a Spantax CV990. You also used to get to see Eastern, Braniff, CP Air, Piedmont, Northwest Orient (I got to fly both of the latter two out of LGW in the late 80s) and a whole host of others taking to the skies. Sadly the glory days of LGW seem to be long gone.

Can't narrow it down to one - I have a few for various reasons.

LGW - happy memories of there, particularly as a kid.
PUY - worked for a summer in Croatia and was there 4 times a week. Great little place - again happy memories.
ONT - as well as being a great facility that's easy and quick to use, it's closest to my in-laws and friends in Southern California. Plus, I can avoid LAX
LHR - even though I'm living in Sydney (which is also a nice airport), LHR is my "home" airport with family & friends 30 mins away.

I just don't see how LGW which was one of the busiest airports in the world now has become a point to point hub for Europe. Another thing also is that most people in the South East would rather use LGW than travelling all the way up to LHR.

Quoting BAViscount (Reply 13):

Yeah I don't think LGW will ever return to the way it was. I have been recently looking at some of the older pics of LGW with all the airlines you mentioned like Braniff (now that is orange I don't mind seeing everyday haha).
I think even for a while Pan Am use to come here, could you confirm that for me? Cheers!

Also another major factor nowadays is that most aircraft are even an a319/320 or 737 etc... where as back in the glory days there were DC-10's, MD-11's 741/2/3, tri-stars etc. LGW use to be Tri-Jet Heaven!

DCA for me. Nice, modern, perfect location. Fun approaches great views just everything is great about it.
A extremely close second MIA. Home airport, the diversity of airlines, new modern terminals but you can still get that great 1970s feel in some places.

I believe Pan Am sold its profitable routes to UA after the Gulf War, leaving only its LGW routes, although I'll be honest when I say that I don't know what those routes were...maybe someone else can shed some light on that?

My NW flight was my first ever trip to the US, December 27th 1986 LGW-BOS on one of their 747 something-or-others, although at that time it certainly wasn't a 744! The Piedmont flight was exactly six months later to CLT, and two weeks after PI started direct service LGW-CLT with their 767s. I remember being annoyed that I wasn't flying on a 747, but it was a nice flight nonetheless, from what I remember!

Luanda's 4 de Fevereiro airport. Why? Because nothing beats:

- Exiting an A340 or 747 via airstairs while listening to the music from the APU and the the nacelles spinning with the calm breeze;
- The blast of heat and humidity with the smell of red earth when leaving the plane;
- The power going out when all passengers await their bags;
- It is one of my two home airports (the other being Faro, Portugal)

Of course, the airport renovations along with its GPUs and new electric structure are killing all the grace!

Definitely SIN

Besides being my hometown airport, it is also the best airport in the world I've been to. Why? Clearing immigration takes no longer than 2 minutes unlike other airports (DXB, BKK, HKG comes to mind) when even the fast track is almost as long as the others. Besides that, SIN opened with T1 in 1988 and T2 in 1991 and both of them still look sparkling new. Using SIN had never been a problem to me and I can foresee myself using it for hundreds of times in the future.

Being my home airport, I have to go with MDW but a close second would be MCO. I've never arrived there and not immediately felt refreshed even if it's downpouring. The shuttle ride to the terminal always gets me with the greenery separating the ramps and it just has that fresh, Florida-y feeling to it.

AMS! I have always loved Schiphol going back to the 1960's when I was a child. The airport is a destination in itself. On my last trip to AMS in 2009 I spent the good portion of a day wandering around shopping at the landside mall and spotting up on the terrace. I also wandered into the casino before my flight home and won 600 Euros on the slots almost immediately! I was smart enough to take the loot & scoot! I'm hoping to take a trip back this fall.

Zurich - very nice and good spotting/ease of transit/duty free/lounges etc...

Athens - Very clean and well maintained/Ease of use and nice lounges. Plenty of places to eat and shop.

Dublin - ( New Terminal 2 ) - A very nice and new facility with lots of space and shops.

The more I fly, the more I appreciate PIT.

#2 would have to be YOW. I haven't been there for a while and I gather that the terminal(s) have been upgraded. I guess that's a good thing, but in a way it's a shame ... just the idea that the old terminal was part of a major nation capital's airport made me giggle each time I flew through it. (In a good way ... I never once had a bad experience in YOW. Unlike some other capital airports I could name.)

#3 is LGB, the only tolerable airport in the Los Angeles area.

I flew last summer on OZ's 747 (twice) and it looked smaller than I thought! Well, it was parked near ICN's gigantic airport terminal, so that helped. But even then, the inside was smaller than I thought it would be. Comfort wise, it was great, I also had the pleasure to sit up front so I saw the engine blades during sunrise over the north pole (somewhat) and it was spectacular. Nothing beats the feeling of being inside the 747-400! But the 777-200LR/300ER remains my favorite, nothing beats that spectacular take offs you experience from a T7 with GE90 engines

But still, it's one of my favorite aircraft and it's definitely one of the best looking plane out there!

And also, can't wait to see AND fly on board the 747-8 intercontinental! The 748i might be the best looking aircraft out there yet!

I think my absolute favorite would have to be SAV. It's small, convenient, modern, and has a lot of Southern charm. And of course, there's plenty of Gulfstreams to watch while you wait

I don't have a favorite per say, But there's a few on the top of my list,

Boston Logan- BOS

Fairly busy with good spotting locations. Not a hub airport, so instead of seeing 75% of the flights flown by a single airline, you see somewhat of a variety.

New York JFK- Tons of variety! Airlines from all over the world. Even one's you've never heard of when you thought you'd heard of them all. Lots of heavies!

Berlin Tegel- TXL
Unique design! Very convenient! With curbside to the gate being only about 50 feet. Awesome viewing deck on the roof!

Bangor International- BGR

Pretty slow without a whole lot going on, but you never know what's going to pass through at any hour of any day. Military troop charters on a daily basis, Antonov -124 and -225's, air rage/medical/mechanical diversions, classic widebody freighters, business jets carrying the rich and famous (such as John Travolta's 707 when he comes to his Maine residence. Donald Trump's 727-100, etc), and anything military. From tankers, to cargo, to fighters. Both American and allied forces.

First, I'm happy that so many people favour my home airport FRA.   I have a lot of memories connected to it, too. When I was a little kid, my aunt who worked for LH back in the days got me a tour through the maintenance facilities including sitting in the cockpit of a 747. Of course, I was thrilled.

In addition, I really like Washington Dulles because of the amazing architecture of the terminal building and because DC has become my second home town. What else? I really enjoyed T5 at LHR and T4 at MAD, too.

Nothing beats the feeling of being inside the 747-400!

Yeah from the looks of them, I can see where your coming from.

777-200LR/300ER

Another aircraft I still need to get myself on! Here at LGW, I see plenty of them which either are mostly BA and EK.

Quoting JetBlue777 (Reply 32):
But still, it's one of my favorite aircraft and it's definitely one of the best looking plane out there!

I agree with you 1 million %!!!!!

And also, can't wait to see AND fly on board the 747-8 intercontinental! The 748i might be the best looking aircraft out there yet!

Yeah same here! After the recent pics on A.net, I must say that aircraft looks damn fine. Quite weird seeing a new 747 without the winglets that im so use to seeing on the 744.
3 words... I Love Aviation!!!

Thus thread needs to broken into large and regional airports. ONT may be nice but comparing it to FRA is silly . Like comparing a C172 to an A380. They both fly but the goals are different.

Of the huge hub airports, I like HKG best. The passenger traffic flow is easy. Long distances are inevitable at large airports, but HKG handles it well. Passport control to bag claim to customs to ground transport is easy, and the train to the city is great. Transfers to other flights are easy, and there is a hotel essentially in the terminal building.

I think of FRA with the same fondness I usually reserve for root canal surgery. At least they have gotten rid of the smoking. They used to have smoking stations every 50 meters or so right down the main corridors. You were never outside a cloud of smoke. The person who designed that tunnel with no escalator and a glacially slow elevator justifies the return of the death penalty to Germany. Watching elderly passengers dragging their baggage up the long stairways is horrible. There must be regular heart attacks there.
