Is Premium Economy Worth It?

Wed Mar 23, 2011 4:02 am

My wife and I are planning a trip WAS-CDG-BOM-WAS some time next year and I'm wondering whether or not to purchase tickets in premium economy. Our travel agent said it was just economy with a little bit more leg room, advantages that do not justify the extra cost. From the website, AF and BA have done a pretty good job marketing their premium economy classes, but not having experienced those classes myself, I'm not sure whether it's worth the cost. So, I'm asking you experts out there or those who have flown premium economy (please also mention which airline) to let me know whether you found your experience worth the extra money, what kind of perks, etc....thanks!

Definitely yes!
I do not know what aircraft AF is using on WAS (Washington?) - CDG - BOM and back but, if you are in Y on a 777, 10 abreast for such long flights is really a p... in the a....!
During daylight flights, it could be OK but not on a night flight!

I'm travelling once a year on CDG-LAX-CDG or another route to/from USA and even if it's for holidays and more expensive, I fly Y+ all the time : it's really more comfortable.
Flying is amazing!

It's worth it to me because I don't pay if I'm on Star Alliance. Many people in that section are on free upgrades. It's one way to attract frequent flyers. It's easily worth the money if you are very tall.

The main advantage is leg room. The rest is just fluff. Fun to have if the price is right, but nothing that will result in lasting memories (I am very short!). I don't usually find it any easier to sleep unless I get a flat bed.

It finally comes down to how much you care to spend. If its just a matter of reducing your children's inheritance, go for it. If you can easily find a better place to spend the money then invest in a few ambien tablets and pass out in economy.

From experience the BA product this worth it for the night flight alone.
You are in a smaller quieter cabin with a bit more leg room and that little bit more seat recline.
You probably won't sleep that much but will doze a lot.
Food the same as up the back but you are served first..
Tip for the night flight,if you travel midweek there are usually quite a few empty seats at the back, after the meal service, wander back and look for a row of empty seats, raise the armrests and you have a flat bed as in First Class. Done it a few times myself and slept like a baby.
you don't get a second chance to make a first impression!

A380, with the new Premium Y at the upper deck, starting June 9th 2011.

And YES ! if you can afford it, on such long flights, it really worth it !
