Your Longest (overland) Distance Between Flights

Tue Mar 29, 2011 8:15 pm

Here's a poll we've never had before (I believe). What is the furthest distance you've ever had between a landing and the NEXT take-off? In other words, you have traveled overland between those 2 locations. For example if you have taken a ship or very long train journey in between.
For myself it would have to be a landing at Iguacu, Brazil, then take-off from Quito, Ecuador, with no flying in between.
Another one I've done is landing at a gen-av airfield in southern Germany, then take-off from Dubai, with no flights in between.

(finally a poll that doesn't reward the super-frequent fliers but those who sometimes take the time to do some overland traveling in between)

Back in 2006 I landed in HAM, traveled around Germany and a little bit of Austria by train and car, and then took off from FRA. The distance between HAM and FRA is only 257 mi according to the Great Circle Mapper, but the actual journey was much longer as we traveled to Berlin, Salzburg, and Munich before driving across the German countryside eventually ended up at FRA.

Quoting Speedbird741 (Reply 2):

London Heathrow to London Gatwick

Newark to New York-JFK

Also:

Back when I was really young, we did CGY-CEB by ship, then CEB-MNL by plane (my first plane ride) then MNL-CGY by plane.

Back in 1992 I was on a RTW trip. I flew in to SFO from HNL on QF, but then did most of my travelling around the US by Amtrak apart from a short hop on DL from MCO to MSY, before flying home from JFK.

My route was:
Oakland, CA - Los Angeles, CA
Los Angeles, CA - Chicago, IL
Chicago, IL - Pittsburgh, PA
Pittsburgh, PA - Philadelphia, PA
Philadelphia, PA - Orlando, FL
(flight to New Orleans, LA)
New Orleans, LA - Salisbury, NC
Salisbury, NC - New York, NY.

My next flight was then JFK-LHR on VS.

I once made a bus ride between BNE and SYD, maybe not the best way to travel
Another trip I made with a rental car started in TUS and ended in LAS, visiting Petrified Forest, Canyon de Chelly, Monument Valley and the Grand Canyon in between, but the longest has to be between LAS and... LAS, visiting many National Parks during 10 days. Something I'd love to do is a coast to coast drive in the US, I keep my fingers crossed for this one !

At the end of 2008 I flew SIN-EWR on SQ and EWR-IAD on UA. Then drove from Washington to New York and flew back EWR-SIN on SQ.

Have also done SIN-TPE-LAX-CLT-TLH then rented a car from Tallahassee to Miami and flew back MIA-PHX-LAX-ICN-SIN.

Cheers

~3700mi/~6000km.

24DEC2010 I flew YYJ-YVR-YYC. I then drove YYC-YYJ (positioning briefly back to Victoria, after living in Calgary), then I moved from YYJ to YHZ (drove my car), covering a combined distance of approx. 6000km. 01FEB2011 I flew ex YHZ (on the way to SJU), so I crossed an entire continent between flights!

Arrived in DTW, and a few days later departed from FNT (ironically, back through DTW). I've also done the reverse, first flying into FNT and then a few days later departing from DTW. Total distance: 56 miles

Arrived in DAY to visit family outside Cincinnati, then went up to Columbus, OH for a couple days and departed from CMH. Total distance: 71 miles

Arrived in RDU to go to an event with my family in Raleigh. The following day I flew out of GSO. Total distance: 66 miles.

Over Spring Break one year, I flew TPA-GSO via ATL on DL for my outbound leg. My return leg (using a free one-way ticket on AirTran) was CLT-DAB (via ATL). Distance between TPA and DAB: 122 miles. Distance between GSO and CLT: 83 miles. Best part of that trip was getting the 767-300 on TPA-ATL.

Arrived at LGW, and departed from FCO, in between took the train from the UK to France, through Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany, the Czech Republic, Austria, Hungary, Slovenia to Italy. I don't know what the distance by train was, but if I was driving it would have been over 4000km (and I imagine the train routing would be around that distance as well).

Flew into Moscow, then took the trans-Mongolian train via Ulan Bator (Mongolia) to Beijing. Flew back from Beijing. That's about a 8000km of train trip in-between. Someone to beat?

I was thinking about it, but not sure. But I think it is LAX to VCV before my flight to XMN... But apart from that I usually departed again at the airport I landed... Boring, eh?

I've done a few long overland trips, though none as long as the Trans Siberian!

Rio de Janeiro to Asuncion
La Paz to Buenos Aires via Machu Pichu, Santiago, Mendoza and Montevideo (these two would have been one without a flight Asuncion-Santa Cruz-La Paz)
Auckland to Christchurch via Kaikohe (Far North), Wellington, Queenstown, Milford Sound
Sydney to Cairns by rail
Singapore to Bangkok
Haugesund (Norway) to Frankkfurt (Hahn) via Stockholm, Berlin, Prague, Zagreb,Naples, Bern, Lindau
Istanbul (Asian side) to Norwich (UK, home) via Athens, Brindisi, Rome, Paris, London
Helsinki to Moscow

Still thinking at some point of doing the longest single train route in the UK, Aberdeen to Penzance, which clocks in at 12 1/2 hours...

Perhaps from PER to CDG and then overland via Luzern and Innsbrück to Venice and down to Rome. Then aboard a cruiseship from Civitavecchia via Livorno, Cannes, Barcelona, Gibraltar, Casablanca, Cadiz, Lisbon, Vigo, L'Havre, Rotterdam and Zeebrugge to Southampton. Quick visit to London and fly home form LHR. I don't know how many miles/ kilometres was covered but it was a pleasant way to pass four weeks.

For me, I think is between ORD and LAX.
I did Chicago to Denver by train (18hours) and Denver to Los Angeles by car travelling for more than 2 weeks.
Flying is amazing!

My longest would be due to a drive between MEL and PER (East coast of Australia to the West Coast)

In a straight line, the airports are 1681 miles apart.

An honorable mention would be between AMS and MUC, but that would be the route AMS-BER-PRG-BUD-MUC (by train, so not a straight line)

That looks like approximately 6500kms according to the GCM: http://gc.kls2.com/cgi-bin/gc?PATH=C...E=best&RANGE-COLOR=navy&MAP-STYLE=

Last year in Africa with 2 friends, landed at JNB, rented a Toyota jeep with 2 rooftents (we were completly self sufficient   ) and drove 11000km / 6800 miles through Southern-Africa and ended up back in JNB

Our route was
JNB > Swaziland > Maputo, Mozambique > Kruger Park (SA) > Magkadikadi Saltpans,Botswana > Zimbabwe > Victoria Falls, Zambia > Chobe Park, Botswana > Maun, Botswana > Rundu, Namibia > Otjiwarongo, Namibia > Swakopmund, Namibia > Oranjerivier, South Africa > Cape Town, South Africa > Wildernis, South Africa > Smithfield, South Africa > Lesotho > JNB

Some random statistics of that trip;

- Bribed Police officers: 2
- Blown tires: 3, of which 1 was just a puncture and 2 we're completly ripped to shreds. Of course in the middle of the Namib dessert
- Elephants encountered: too f*cking many
- Border crossings: somewhere around 15 African border crossings
- Quickest border crossing: From South Africa into Lesotho, a record 5 minutes
- Longest border crossing: Zimbabwe into Zambia, 4 very sweaty hours

I know I've plugged this before, but I'm gonna do it again anyway.  For those interested some pics of this trip:

By road it would be approximately 3,450km - it is not in a straight line

Thanks for that. I did have the trip summary from the cruise line but lost it somewhere along the way.

Well before my road trip, I had landed at LGA last. Then I went on my just-under-15,000 trip. After that I went to college, so the next airport I departed from was ROC (flying to LGA, of course).

In all seriousness, though, ROC and NYC is the furthest I've traveled between flights. Either that, or betwen SJO and BOC (Bocas del Toro, Panama -- which includes a boat ride!). As the crow flies, NYC-ROC is further. But since we traveled all around Costa Rica, that might have been longer in terms of mileage.

I'll see your "Moscow, the trans-Mongolian train via Ulan Bator (Mongolia) to Beijing" and raise you Helsinki, Finland via St Petersberg, Moscow & Irkutsk to Vladivostok.
About 10,200km. (Moscow-VVO is 9,288km by rail)

I cruised from Southampton to New York and then flew JFK-LAX-LHR. I didn't fly from anywhere to get to the ship in Southampton, so who knows if this qualifies, but what the heck.
The route we took was, if I remember correctly, around 3200nm.

Oh, I forgot one of my trips (along with the MEL-PER drive and trains through Europe)

I drove up to Newcastle from London, took the ferry across to Stavanger in Norway, and drove up to my hometown in Northern Norway (closest airport is EVE and consequently the next flight was from there)

In a straight line, LHR (where my last flight came in) to EVE is 1,309 miles or 2,106 km. But the actual route using google maps, makes it 486 km up to Newcastle, 617 km by ferry and 1,839 km from Stavanger to EVE, for a grand total of 2,942 km.

I have also done the same trip on two other occasions, once with the ferry to Bergen (but via Haugesund and Stavanger)

Probably LGW to LHR actually, or LHR-STN! Not very adventurous, admittedly.
