Flying The Biman Bangladesh DC-10

Sun Apr 03, 2011 8:41 am

I don't want to hijack that other poster's thread in this forum, so I'm going to start a dedicated one. Could anybody help me find a strategy to maximize my chances to fly on Biman's DC10?
The problem is that I can't fly there before October 30. So in case they are all retired by then, I'm screwed, but that I'm willing to risk. Now my thought is that the Rome route for example, which shows op-by DC10 right now, I'd suppose would be the first one they'd put newer equipment on when it becomes available. According to this http://www.airportspotting.com/biman-ends-boeing-777-service/ , they have returned 1 777 now, so this makes my chances bigger I guess.
So my plan is to catch the DC-10 on the Abu Dhabi to Dhaka route, simply because Dubai is right next door and in case they shut this one down or pull the DC-10, I could try to catch the DXB flight instead. I'm going to allow a 48 hour buffer after my flight in Dhaka in case they're messing with the schedules.

My question is simply, do you think my chances are reasonable (I know nothing is 100% sure, especially with such an old aircraft), do you think it's worth a try or pretty much useless? I appreciate any input!

Hi Soren,

I think chances are reasonably good, BG announced and subsequently delayed the 777 many times. I heard that the DC-10 should remain until 2013. When I flew with them in 2009, the crew said the HKG flight is always operated by the DC-10, so I'd include this one for sure. It probably makes sense to arrive from AUH or DXB as you said, do 2 or so domestic flights (also op by DC-10) and depart to HKG.

User xv205 could probably make some good recommendations as he just returned from a Bangladesh trip with max Biman DC-10 and F-28 action.

From what I heard one can now at least book online, I had to go through a travel agent with the hassle of overseas funds transfer etc.

Regards,
Loran

Hi Soren.

The DC-10 operates most BG flights out of AUH, with just the occasional swap to an A310. Today flight was operated by S2-ACP. I have flown the DC-10 DAC-KTM but may be interested in doing it out of AUH since I live in Abu Dhabi. Let me know nearer the time and I may be interested in joining you if you don't mind.

I agree with Axel that they will almost certainly around for a while yet.

Awesome, thanks for the advice! I'm sort of piecing together a one-week round the world for early November, and I'm definitely going to include the DC10 in it. I'm now planning to do Abu Dhabi to Dhaka via Chittagong, and then some domestic flights, and then onwards to Hong Kong, so there just HAS to be a DC10 in that itinerary!
Keeping my fingers crossed.

Good luck to you! I'm hoping to fly BG's DC-10 before they retire, but it sounds like you're going to beat me to it. Have a great flight!
