Breakthrough Innovation At UA Needed!

Sat Apr 09, 2011 4:30 am

Soon UNITED will have the best route map in the world with a great range of ac to do different job and a new penchant for customer service excellence - and a handful of great premium products from the new First Class seats, a better p.s. and a fleetwide E+. But, it can't stop there. Innovation is the new lifeblood of all companies. I wonder if here we can discuss what the coming aviation powerhouse can provide. The first place I go is to offer for those who can and will pay for something better than First Class. Small, very long range all flat bed seat ac from US hubs to critical destinations that will help win company contracts to deliver their executives with reduced hassle and additional comfort for when minds need to be extra sharp on arrival to cities: HK. SP. LHR. FRA. NRT. SIN MUM. TRANSCON. ETC. What an "potential" unmet high flier need.

CO, and presumably UA, already has a lie flat product in their Business Class. I think the market for a US flag carrier super-premium (i.e. Emirates 380, Singapore 380, BA 318, PrivatAir 73NG OpenSkies 757 etc) product to/from the U.S. is over-hyped. If such a market and its high yield existed, someone would have done it by now.

Right. What I should have said is that market doesn't exist for a global US flag carrier, but it does for the individual who uses Marquis/NetJets.

First of all, I'm always excited if someone appreciates the quality of UA which is my favorite airline. But I think UA's future is not going to be decided by breakthrough innovations but by smart solutions for current problems that help gain market share. For example, I think the merged company should use EWR for high yield traffic to Europe, Asia etc. and develop IAD as a hub for connecting traffic (in addition to the high yield O&D that it is providing now). Why? Because IAD is basically the only airport in the Northeast that allows a significant expansion. So, UA, build a new concourse C/D and make it an even better hub than it is right now! With regard to other issues, the new UA has (at the moment) orders for both the 787 and the 350 which allows them to operate the perfect aircraft for different routes. They also have an impressive product for first and business as well as E+. The focus for the next months/years should be on integrating the two companies, create a unified brand identity and realize the projected benefits of the merger.

I have been on the Singapore all business nonstop from EWR. I have heard it does well. My RT was packed both ways.. I presume you're right, US carriers must have thought about it- but a nose to tail 777 with the new UA F seat would be an amazing try. Not all research studies are correct..sometimes it needs to be test marketed. Singapore is one destination along with HK but what about the BA smaller ac approach? An A319 across the Atlantic - why not use a few of their 200 757's configured the same to LHR, FRA, GIG/GRU, CDG?
