To HKG From East Coast US?

Thu Apr 21, 2011 9:06 pm

Out of UA, CO and DL, what pros/cons and suggestions can you recommend for this trip? Cost is the #1 factor, then duration. Any amenities are a bonus, but I realize we're talking about Y so any would be limited.

UA out of ORD on a 744 is non-stop, but the 744 is dated. Have done this route a few times over the years...
CO out of EWR on the 772 is non-stop and appears to have in-flight power in Y
DL out of DTW is a 744 to NRT, then change to a 333 for NRT-HKG

The return trip options look similar with a CO option to stop in NRT and then do NRT-IAD on a 772.

If I could I would go CX JFK-HKG, but cost is an issue.

The options on CO appear to be the best at face value, laptop power in Y, good connections and cost. Thank in advance for any insight you may share.

Is is that much higher than the others? Just curious. Obviously they are the best in my book - I absolutely love CX, and will be on the JFK-HKG flight in a few weeks.

You couldn't pay me enough to fly on the UA 744s simply because I cannot stand not having PTVs if there is an option (i.e. another airline offering them) to have them. IFE is very important to me on that long of a flight, even if I can sleep for 6 or so hours (because that still leaves a heck of a long flight remaining).

I think CO sounds best. Sounds like you agree.

If I were you, I'd avoid it.

A333 is good. DL 744's, same as UA's 744 - outdated and no PTVs.

I'd go with CO, though I'm a fan of DL, their 747 is outdated.

My dad left for HKG this morning and CX had a sale, we paid $1100+ and he's continuing to CEB so I guess JFK-HKG would be cheaper. Try to scan CX's website and wait for random sales that they're having.

You could also try OZ, they're a good airline and they're usually cheaper than the rest.

JFK usually has the cheapest option to Asia since there's more flights = more competitions. From my experience, OZ and CI tends to have the cheapest option. If you don't mind having stop overs, then you'd have more option from JFK. But like sw733, CX is definitely the way to go.

When do you plan to depart? Summer is definitely much more expensive, a CX flight could cost you $600-$1000 in
March and cost you $1500+ in the summer.

Cheapest is about $1200 per, but add in the connection to MCO/TPA for 3 people and that will add up quick. With connection, DL is about $1300, UA and CO are around $1100 with a few even lower.

Within the next couple weeks, (medical issue for a family member in HKG, not an emergency, but we should be there...)

I'm a fan of the 744, just not 15 hours in a "vintage" model! Sounds like UA 895/896 would be exactly as I remember from years ago, 4 movies, 4 meals and a looonngggg time.

I think that's what will happen if fares stay about the same and no one mentions anything bad about the CO flights, although I can't imagine what would be negative compared to the alternatives.

Thanks to you both-

When are you traveling?
DL starts DTW-HKG nonstop second week of May on a B777-LR.
New aircraft with PTV and AVOD plus more importantly DTW!!!

You can completely bypass NRT

QR used to have very cheap fares ex-JFK and ex-IAH to Asia (well, mostly SE Asia, but prob HK as well). Their IFE is quite good. Food is below par and service is horrible. I once managed to buy a ticket SIN - DOH - JFK and return the night before for USD850 including taxes.

Of course, traveling eastwards from the US east coast will mean you will waste a lot of time.

Cheers

Good choice!

DTW-NRT is gonna be hell without PTVs which I can't stand!

Another suggestion I could give is fly EWR-ANC-TPE-NRT with BR. They are wonderful too and you could even try upgrading yourself to Premium Economy as their PE prices are actually cheaper than SQ's Y to JFK from SIN, unsure about ex-EWR though. However, this requires some backtracking (which I don't mind).
One way I will fly around the world!

Delta has been running DTW-HKG nonstop for quite awhile now, well over a year at the very least.

As far as the OP, I'd vote for the DTW-HKG.

Kind of ironic that DL was doing this route in December and January with the 777-LR, but pulled it of late.

Traveling in the next 10 days or so...

Allright... I'm confused. Where is this information coming from?
Per OAG: DL 187 DTW-HKG currently operates 1/3/4/6 nonstop 77L through May (except 11May and 23May).
As flyer732 says, has been flying for some time now.

I had a last minute personal trip to HKG last year and didn't want to use my miles on AA, so I chose to fly the cheapest - CO in Y. It was fine...nothing extraordinary but fine. On a long flight like that, any a/c gets old after 10 hours, let alone 15!

If this is true, DL would definitely be back on my list. The 744s, no thanks. But the 777LR with PTVs, sure.

I often go through NRT going to/from HKG, but chose to avoid it for my next trip simply because of the unknowns right now.

Two words: Economy Plus. For a 15-hour flight I'd rank legroom over a PTV any day. I can bring my own entertainment.

But if you must have PTVs, perhaps KE is an option. Usually good fares, 34" seat pitch, PTVs, and miles credit to DL. The only downside would be the extra stop at ICN.

I just pulled the flight history, its operated as scheduled, but the flight number used to be 26/27. There hasn't been a gap in the schedule at all.

I concur: DTW-HKG does not begin in May; it has been on world's longest flights since December of last year when I started the list, (I check all 100 flights monthly to keep the list updated). It is operated four times per week currently, not five.

if your flying from FLA, how about flying to LAX or SFO, more options there.

or just try booking from your home airport on your chosen airline, CX partners with AA, would probally be cheaper all together then bying a flight to NY or DTW, and then flying from that connection airport to HKG

DL's website. Try to book a nonstop to HKG and it is not there, you must go through NRT for the dates I tried (next 2 weeks). Mother-in-law flew the DL 777 HKG-DTW back in December when she visited and same plane going back.

Connecting via LAX or SFO, the times are horrible, very non-efficient. Just checked and can do AA DFW-NRT on an AA 777, then NRT-HKG on a CX 773, and return all for about $1000. I never thought to check AA even though I knew they partnered with CX, thanks for the suggestion, that may be the route to go.

Be careful. CX is canceling a lot of their HKG-NRT-HKG flights in the wake of the earthquake, and they just recently extended these cancellations, some through June.

This is why I am not flying via NRT when I go to China next month, like I often do, and instead am getting on the new LAX-PVG on AA.

Yeah... so there is a non-stop DTW-HKG and you do not have to go to NRT
