Your Favourite Soviet Aircraft

Sun May 01, 2011 2:10 am

Please share with us your favourite kerosene addicted, unsettling takeoff performer, and beautifully loud Soviet aircraft. Mine is the rugged IL-76! Wonderful machine it is.

I haven't seen any Vodka burners yet at Canberra airport (I didn't view the video, but I guess that was the one you linked to).

However, my favourite is the AN-124, or the TU-144 which frankly is still one of the most beautiful planes.

AN-124 isn't my favourite however when it is running 5 hours late:

Only ISO12,800, F/4.0 lens and the steadiest panning I could manage made that image possible. It was actually a lot darker than it looks. But you can't help but be impressed with those huge wings and that massive amount of wheels underneath it.

That is a darn fine image for the settings and circumstances!

The Russian manufacturers have given us some awesome machines to chose from, but I think I'll have to select the venerable Tu-154. It's smooth in flight, rugged and strong, a three-holer which is a bonus and the noise from those engines is just awesome.

Agreed, the IL62(M) is the best looking soviet build jet.

The TU-134 is also amazing looking, especially the old ones with the navigator windows in the nose. Also with the main landing gear being very far apart from each other makes it look massively big.

However my all time favorite soviet aircraft has got to be the Tupolev TU-114.

It's big, it's got massive counter rotating props, it's loud, it's a bomber derivative and was at the time the fastest commercial airliner in the world. Also it was so high of the ground that when Nikita Khrushchev visited Andrews air force base in the USA they didn't even have a stair that could reach the door!

It is an absolute shame that none of them are airworthy at this time.

I think the same. I have never seen an IL-62 fly. I would love to see it take off. The only one I ever saw in real life was the Interflug Il-62 at LEJ, which I hear is being made in to a resturant in Leipzig.

I also like the looks of the AN-12. I was happy to see on of those on the cargo ramp at AMS a few weeks ago.

Nope, not that one. This one is even better, and makes you feel as if you are attending a symphony.

I love the TU-134. It looks so elegant, with it's streamlined shape. It l;ooks really dainty or something, even though you know it's a flying tank. It's even better with the glass nose. And of course the sound is beautiful.

I think the AN-12 is nice lookin too, for a cargo aircraft. Has a nice shape I think, & looks cool with the 4 props.

Well, despite the less than favorable publicity it's been getting lately, I still think the Tu-154 is a cool lookin' bird.

I think the Tu-114 still ranks as the fastest (and probably loudest) turboprop airliner ever built.

Also it was so high of the ground that when Nikita Khrushchev visited Andrews air force base in the USA they didn't even have a stair that could reach the door!

On it's first demonstration visit to JFK (then IDL) in the summer of 1959 they had to rig up an extension to the tallest available stairs to reach the door. More easily seen in the second photo below. New Pan Am terminal then under construction in the background.

The Tu-114 at IDL with it's famous designer, Andrei Tupolev, then aged 71. Can see the extension to the stairs to the forward door.

And at Andrews AFB September 15, 1959, the first U.S. visit of a Soviet Premier.

Wow, thanks for those amazing photos! I had heard about the infamous stair incident but never actually seen it. That aircraft looks so beautiful behind it's creator.

I found those photos in the following Russian forum.

Quite a few other Tu-114 photos there. If you want to read a rough translation of the Russian text you can cut and paste it into the Google (or other) translation tool.

I'm partial to the AN-2. While it doesn't burn kerosene, it still an amazing machine, that opened travel to many, many locations. Someday, I hope to at least get a chance to fly one and perhaps even purchase one.
