PDX - Checking In With UA

Mon May 02, 2011 12:54 am

In the next couple of months, I will be flying out of PDX on UA with my sister. We are departing on UA 739 to DEN leaving at 7:08 AM, so we'll be getting to the airport at around 5:00.

We will have bags to check for our flight. In my recent visits to PDX I have noticed that UA is not yet on the new inline bag sorting system, while others are. Will UA be on the new system by mid-June?

In the early morning (when we will be checking in), the UA counters always appear to be a giant mob, with little organization. There just always seems to be crowds of people trying to get to either a kiosk or over to the CTX stations to drop off their tagged bags.

I have seen how UA runs their check-in desks these days. There are simply rows and rows of self-service kiosks placed in front of or nearby the counters. All the agents really seem interested in doing is pointing passengers to an open kiosk to take care of business themselves, as opposed to a real person helping them with bag fees, boarding passes, etc.

So, I am curious as to how we can check in as efficiently as possible. It would probably be a good start to pay for our checked bags online, but what else can we do to get our boarding passes and our bags checked through with as little trouble as possible? (And hopefully not have to use a kiosk) Does UA operate a baggage drop only-line in PDX?

The bottom line is this - How does one get help from an actual, real customer service agent in PDX, in a respectable amount of time, and without being prodded over to a kiosk.

Thank you in advance and I look forward to hearing your advice!

Well I was at the UA pdx check in a while ago, and it wasn't bad. Remember that a lot of times there could be a million open self service kiosks but everyone waits for the agent to check in (happens all the time at every UA check in and it's really annoying) that is why the agents are always trying to get people to the self serve kiosks (saves time). You still have to take your bag after they tag it to the TSA exray machines right behind check in. Also remember that UA check in is also shared with Air Canada and that is why it may seem crowded. The only difference between UA pdx check in and other UA stations is that it the machines ask you if you are flying AC or UA.

But I do want a real person helping me with bags.

When will UA be using the new inline bag sorting system?

Also - Does UA issue gold boarding passes anywhere in PDX?

The bag tags will print out on the other side of the kiosk and an UA agent will come around and tag it for you. It's kinda funny seeing 1 UA agent running from kiosk to kiosk trying to tag all the bags.

Yes, I have witnessed this practice before. Definitely a shortage of employees during this economic downturn.

Where did you get the blue passes?

At the premier line...the machines with the slots that pass come out of is the size of the width of the pass for blue ones and the size of the length of the pass for the flimsy ones...

OK, so basically just use the kiosks at the Premier check-in area. Are economy pax allowed to use these machines?
