DL B744 Seating Question

Fri May 06, 2011 6:19 am

I am lucky enough to be traveling on a DL B744 this summer from DTW-AMS-DTW. My question is how big is the space between the seats and the windows in the back of the plane where it is a 2x4x2 configuration? I will be in seats 65A and 64K respectively. http://www.seatguru.com/airlines/Del.../Delta_Airlines_Boeing_747-400.php

Only reason I ask is because I am a window seat addict and love to look out the window all the time and am wondering if the apparent gap there will be an issue.

Wow, those are the exact two seats I have been seated in! And I am a window seat addict as well. No better IFE than a window.

I love the view from those seats. As long as the others keep keep their window shades open, you'll have a panorama-like view that you just don't get to have very often on an airplane. From 64K, you can see fully or partially out of 5 windows at one time. It's feels kinda like riding in a bus. There's close to a foot of distance between the seat and the window. Great for in-flight small-bag storage or stretching your legs out. You can watch the more distant ground pass by all the time, but you'll need to lean over to see straight below. From 65A, it's more like all or part of 4 windows to view out of. However you're now fairly close to the wall, maybe 6 inches at most, so I didn't find it very bothersome to view downwards. You still have some storage space to the side, too. What's really fun from these seats is sometimes being able to see the plane's contrail form either to your side or behind. One issue that you may not like is that the very rear will experience the most airplane movement in turbulent conditions. But that's a variable unrelated to a window view.

I like those seats so much that they are my first choice on economy seats on a 747. To me the multiple positives far outweigh the negative of not having the wall right next to you.

I'm right on with MSPNWA's view. I really like these seats. I had been warned that one drawback was people lining up in the aisle for a lav visit, but not once did that occur during my flights. There is no way to lean against the wall/window to sleep but very comfortable in comparison to a 3 seat row. Nice and private seat area to enjoy with a traveling companion (if you have one) but my best ticket purchase ever.....2 cheap Y tickets roundtrip and I rode in those 2 seats alone. Almost as good as business class at a rock bottom price. A pillow, blanket and arm rest raised and I stretched out all the way to NRT. Continued on to GUM on a 767 with 2 seats to myself so it was a great alternative to buying an expensive J ticket and enjoying the space and comfort of just doing "my own thing." Free beer and wine, decent food and 3 airline magazines and I was in heaven! I did not have any turbulence issues although you do feel a bump, a sway and a bit higher noise threshold but I still rank them some of the best seats on a 747 if flying Y.
Enjoy your trip and ride,
Thomas
