Which *A FFP To Choose?

Thu May 12, 2011 4:46 am

Hi Everyone,

The past 12 months I have been a member in TK's FFP, having earned ~80,000 miles the past 12 months, this gives me TK's top tier (Elite Plus/*G) until April 2013, then If I don't re-qualify, I would drop one tier (Elite/*G), which would then be valid until April 2015.

In other words, I have confirmed Star Gold status until April 2015, without the need to credit one single mile to my TK account. Therefore achieving star

Considering the following breakdown of my ~90,000 (could make it to 100k) miles flown in the last 12 months, which other star alliance carrier (other than TK) should I enroll with? My main things are mileage redemption ability on mainly on LH/LX/Asian carriers, as well as the # of miles needed for premium cabin redemption, availability of free upgrades (domestic F on seat available basis a la CO/UA, e-vouchers a la LH, system upgrades a la UA/TK) and finally, ease of communication, clear and concise websites where online booking with miles, and viewing and editing mileage account is possible.

CO
~ 32,100 = 32%
TK
~ 21,000 = 21%
LX
~ 15,500 = 16%
UA
~ 11,000 = 11%
AC
~ 8,000 = 8%
LH
~ 7,500 = 7%
US
~ 2,000 = 2%
TP
~ 5,200 = 5%
BD/JK/A3
less than 1%

Many thanks for any suggestions!
Cheers,

AFAIK UA doesn't charge YQ on award tickets in contrast to LX/LH, so they would be an option (same FFP for LH and LX of course). I guess OnePass (CO) and MileagePlus (UA) will be merged in the near future. So for the cost of an award ticket, MP would probably be a good idea.

Thanks for the info.
Just wondering what does "YQ" mean?
And yes I have looked into UA, however the miles required for C class redemption from the US to Europe for example are quite high at 105,000, and that's the "saver" rate which is not always available. Also I have heard the UA heavily restricts its members on redemption of mile son other Star carriers, what do you think?

Right now I am also looking into BD Diamond Club, with their enticing miles+cash options:

112,500 miles needed for F redemption
or
62,500 for F (plus 350GBP (574 USD) cash)

67,500 miles needed for C redemption
or
37,500 for C (plus 210 GBP (345USD) cash)

Do you see why I am thinking that UA's rates of 105,000 for C and 135,000 for F are a little high? I mean, I could be flying in F (with cash option, which is not a lot) for just 5,000 miles more (from the full mileage C redemption).

Cheers,

YQ

Sorry, that's the fuel surcharge on the ticket price. I recently booked a miles and more ticket ZRH-YXY // YVR-ZRH and paid taxes and fees of 536 CHF. Fuel surcharge YQ was 391,50 CHF, so without that the ticket would have been only 144,50 in taxes and fees. Unfortunately I don't fly that much and use several other methods to generate miles, most notably the M&M credit card, so the UA FFP is not that attractive to me personally. As you fly pretty much and accrue enough miles by flying, that wouldn't matter so much in your case!

Wow, that's crazy how you spent on fuel charge and taxes!
For the same price + 62,500 miles I could redeem a F class award on Europe-North America return with BD.
Maybe BD doesn't sound too bad then hey?!
