Farthest Travel Distance

Tue May 17, 2011 7:31 pm

Dug around the forum graveyard, but didn't find this topic discussed yet.

For my this year's vacation, I intend to fly to New Zealand and visit the cities of Auckland, Christchurch and Wellington. For those of you who don't know, the women there are just as stunning as the rest of the country   But despite being an aviation enthusiast to the max, I'm not really looking forward to being coughed and folded in economy class for 25+ hrs. So I'm planning to make my journey a one-stop and fly LHR-NRT-AKL on my way there and something like AKL-HKG-LHR on my way home. I've been to Hong Kong too many times though and would actually prefer to make my stop elsewhere, but since I want both flights to be one stops only, I'm very limited in my options (suggestions?).

But it got me thinking.. what other travellers are plagued with such long travel times? According to the GCM, LHR-AKL comes in at 11406nm. The only thing longer than that I could identify was SCL-PEK at 11820nm. Everything else that seemed long is surprisingly shorter.

So what other city pairs can you find that are farther apart from each other than LHR-AKL or SCL-PEK?

Thanks for your input

I have but it's not really practicable. I have to stay within one alliance, or codesharing airlines, to book the entire itinerary on one ticket and I don't want to make both stop overs in the same city. The only airline that flies between South Korea and New Zealand is KE and they are Skyteam. So for my return, I'd have to get on a Skyteam airline which, if I want to stick to the one-stop only rule, would limit my options to CZ to CAN only.

One World looks even worse.

So I'm basically forced to go the Star Alliance way. I was thinking to do LHR-NRT on ANA and then NRT-AKL on NZ. The only other places I can think of that would allow for a Star Alliance one-stop connection back home would be NZ via HKG, SQ via SIN or NZ via LAX or SFO.

Too bad I hate CO with a passion and that their 787 AKL-IAH hasn't commenced yet. For that, I would have considered making an exception

How about going out via Bangkok with TG and NZ and back via Vancouver with NZ and AC? I'm presuming you are doing this on miles or as a RTW ticket?

Btw, PEK-EZE is longer still at 11,983 miles, or adding a minor city in you have PEK-BHI at 12,319 miles.

I'm going between September/October which is rainy season in BKK. I like the idea though. Thailand is awesome.

And YVR sounds amazing. I've never been there but have always wanted to go. I'll definitely take this into consideration, thanks.

And I'm not sure on what means exactly I'll end up travelling. I'll look for the cheapest option, and that's what I'm gonna do. I have no miles to burn though. I've been very negligent with collecting them because as an enthusiast, I fly variety over loyalty. And I also find it highly annoying when airlines don't accrue your miles correctly. After fighting hard to get my BA miles accredited, I upgraded my parents from eco to business on LHR-SFO-HNL, HNL-LAX-LHR with them, only to void my account and not have a reason left to fly with them (or AA) ever again
