Airports With 4 Or More Runways

Thu May 19, 2011 10:19 am

(I was just asked by a colleague) How many airports have four or more runways?

Here's what I could think of so far:
ATL, BOS, CDG, CLT, CVG, DEN, DFW, DTW, FRA, HND, IAD, IAH, JFK, LAS, LAX, MAD, MCO, MEM, MIA, MSP, ORD, PHL, SFO, YYZ

Thanks for further input!

AMS ( 6 runways)

FRA btw has only 3 at the moment.

Of course, how could I forget AMS. FRA's 4th runway opening is imminent (and that was the trigger why I was asked).

MDW is another one.

MDW (5)

OAK (4)

YVR (4)

The first ones coming to my mind...

FRA has 5 runways. 07L, 07R, 18, 25L and 25R.
It used to have a 6th, RWY26, which was within 25L but displaced from the threshold in order to allow more staggered parallel approaches with 25R.

Chance are, this list will get out of hand pretty quickly. Heck, even BWI has 4 runways:

Clearly for the purposes of the thread 07L = 25R and 07R = 25L - otherwise the "4 runway" list would be huge and not particularly interesting...

Do two runways really have the same designation? In fact, the google map looks confusing when it comes to these two runways.

Here are some more with 4 runways: STL; BZG; ISP (that one surprised me); and YIP.

Three of the BZG runways are grass, but you didn't specify hard-surface!  Smile

GFK has 5 runways, 3 North South and 2 east west. Though the "Center" runway is used for Helicopters, so in reality actual runways that most planes can land on is 4.

Perhaps you should limit the list to four operating commercial runways. Airports like OAK have four runways but commercial flights can only use one. I am not even sure if GA can use all of the other three either. Four parallel runways are also very different than four intersecting runways. The rare species are airports with more than four operating commercial runways.

Huh? I have seen them use 4x plenty of times -- in fact, most of the time. Typical 2x2 pattern of dropping them on the outers and shooting them off the inners. Perhaps our definition of "simultaneous" differs?

Doesn't LAX use all four now? 24L and 25R usually for takeoff, 24R and 25L usually for landing? It seems to be that way everytime I fly there.

I think LAX used to have 5 runways. There was a 26/8 which was very short, really just a taxiway with runway numbers near Imperial Blvd.

Actually, they don't usually use them in that config. North flow and south at the same time? The best bet there is always starting or ending closest to the terminal. e.g. arriving on the 16s, Departing on the 17s and then the E/W ones they can use either way depending on the wind. Or simply reverse the whole picture. (e.g. in 35s, out 34s, etc.)

The master plan for DEN actually has 12 runways planned out, all non-intersecting (8 north/south and 4 east/west). Too bad the limiting factor is the inter-concourse train. It is already pretty much maxed out and as far as I know no one has a good solution yet.

Actually they can do the converging ops. I don't think it happens real often because the wind has to be right and VFR, but they can do it. Look for "Optimum VFR Config" in the notes column: http://www.fly.faa.gov/Information/west/zdv/den/frames.htm

There is a high propability that AMS will receive its 7th runway in the forseable futher, parallel to rwy 06/24, but it will take some while as it requires acquisition of some urban grounds.
