LHR VS LGW

Mon May 30, 2011 1:53 pm

I'm going to be visiting The U.K. soon. In your opinion which airport is better for arrival, clearing customs and ground transportation. I'll be flying DL either from JFK to LHR or ATL to LGW.

My hotel is in Windsor so LHR seems like the logical choice. But I've heard that LHR can be a bit of a mess.

Any comments and advice are welcome.

Cheers,

Brett

If you are staying in Windsor then definitely go for LHR, it's miles easier, especially if you are taking a cab to the hotel.

If you're staying in Windsor LHR is going to be best.

Both airports get very busy in immigration and waiting times are pretty much the same.

If you were staying in central London LHR and LGW would be the same, except it's more convenient, and cheaper, to hop on the tube from LHR to central London.
and with that..cabin crew, seats for landing please.

Ageed that LHR is a better bet if you are staying in Windsor but if you are planning to take a cab do NOT get one of the black cabs from the rank outside. They are London cabs and will charge you a fortune as they cannot pick up fares in Windsor and have to return to the airport for their next fare. A better bet is to go to the info desk and ask them to get you a local minicab (or do a bit of online research and book one yourself). There is also a good bus connection to central Windsor from the Central Bus Station.

When you land in T4, Get the LHR Connect to Central, its a free transfer, from there its a short walk to the central bus station where you can get a bus.

Bus no 75 or 76 from Central Bus Station or 71,77,78 from T5

Heathrow is closer but the last time it was there it was like a building site - so expect it to be a bit crazy. The time you'll save is well worth it though - definitely use Heathrow. Gatwick is around 45 miles from Heathrow so it's a fair trek.

It may be quicker to get the 490 Bus from T4 to T5 (free!) and then pick up one of the Windsor services from there.

Well, LHR is certainly easier as far as getting to your hotel is concerned but LGW is by far the nicer airport... LHR is a pig, I've given up trying to defend it.

I just recently flew DL 10 ATL-LHR and DL 273 ATL-LHR. I found Terminal 4 at LHR really easy to navigate. I arrived on a Saturday afternoon and left late on a Wednesday morning and it wasn't too crowded during those times. I think Terminal 4 might not be as busy as it used to be since BA has moved to Terminal 5. Also, an advantage of flying to LHR over LGW on DL is you will get a 764 over a 763, which will have personal TV's at every seat.
