Virgin Galactic: Would You Pay $200,000?

Wed Jun 01, 2011 2:22 pm

As Virgin Galactic is steadily working towards the first sub-orbital commercial spaceflights with a commercial craft (a worlds first) I was wondering who on this board is rich or mad enough to cough up the aprox. $200,000 for the 5 minutes of spaceflight/weightlessness.

I'm not rich, but I'm certainly mad enough   If I had 200 grand laying around I wouldn't lose 1 second sleep over spending it on those 5 minutes.

What about you?

If I had the cash, I'd be trying to get in the queue before you!

I think I'd rather spend my 200 grand flying First Class round the world and staying in top notch hotels (especially the Burj Dubai!).
One way I will fly around the world!

Definitely yes, although chances are that I would need quite some warning time prior to the flight as I think it is weight restricted.

I completely agree! I'd fly everywhere I could think of, though if I had 200 grand right now, my mom would say "SAVE IT FOR COLLEGE!"

Besides, after I went to the Mission Space ride at Epcot, Disney World, I absolutely have no desire to go to space.
It's a cultural thing.

if I could land on a planet or the moon, i would. Since I can't without getting older I wouldn't. Around the world is much better IMHO.

Technically everyone else gets older, time passes slower as you travel at high speeds. But it really doesn't make more than a few millisecond difference unless you were going close to light speed which ain't gonna happen anytime soon.

I thought I'd heard about a competing outfit somewhere in the Netherlands Antilles which was planning to offer something similar for around 50 grand. Either way, the price is sure to fall over time, and for me, it's not a question of if but when- especially if such flights eventually go into full orbit.

It ain't the weightlessness you're paying for, you can ride the vomit comet for a fraction of the price and get that. The attraction is the act of actually leaving Earth, even for only a few minutes. The very thought makes my stomach flutter.

If I had the cash to splurge on it, I would most definitely do it, as it's the closest I'd probably ever get to being an astronaut. Now realistically, if the prices were to go down due to competition from other companies to the point where I could save up the money for a year or two (I'd gladly nix my twice a year trips to Las Vegas for a few years in order to save up for a space flight.), I would not hesitate to do it.

now that I've had a chance to find it... www.rocketshiptours.com Virgin Galactic will likely carry the first passengers on this type of thing, but these guys already have the advertised price down to $95k. A little while longer and the price will probably halve again, and while $50k is a lot, it's no more than lots of us spend on a nice car, and within reach of a middle-class guy who is willing to save for it. IMHO- to hell with the car!

What I'd do is wait for 200 people to pay 200 k and then the price goes down to 20 k doesn't it?
So I'd spend the rest of money just like initious

No.

Since that's too short of an answer for a.net filters, I will also add "absolutely not."

I don't think I'd sign up.

At over £150,000 I'd be dead worried it would be a disappointment. You don't actually get that long in space.
and with that..cabin crew, seats for landing please.

$200,000 for 5 min? No thank you. If it was an hour plus, maybe. I can think of a lot more things to do with $200,000 in 5 min...

No way. Even if I had 200 grand I wouldn't spend it on five minutes of "space" time. I'd rather spend it on nice cars, first class tickets, etc.

But first I would run to the store for one of those Omega watches, man those are beautiful. But dang are they expensive!

One word - YES.

In my masters in air and space law, (in the Netherlands) we had the Virgin Galactic sale rep come and try and sell a ride to us, it was incredible, we got shiny brochures, models of the Space Ship and the controversial promise that we would get "astronaut wings" after the flight.

As with all these things the first few people will pay through the nose compared to those willing to wait a while. Personally I'm not willing to pay $200k to be one of the very first, especially when the money goes to Branson

I said to a friend of mine once, how amazing I thought it was to think that when I get onto an airplane and travel across the country, I'm not on the earth anymore.

He replied, "Well, technically when you jump you leave the earth..."

Nee, ik zou het niet. I would rather transfer those 200K to my 'Voyage across southern Africa' fund. Probably use them to add some Mercedes G to my motorcade . On a more serious note, I really do not see myself spending money on that. I just don't recognize the excitment of it.

I'm wondering how many trips it would take, and what the benefits of achieving gold status in the Frequent Flyer program will be?
