Enough Connection Time At SFO?

Wed Jun 01, 2011 8:21 pm

Hi all,

I'm planning a trip from DC to Portland at the end of the month. In looking to get on my first triple seven (!!), I'm thinking about the following itinerary, on either Tues. 6/28 or Wed. 6/29:

UA 975, IAD-SFO, 5:21p-7:55p
UA 373, SFO-PDX, 8:51p-10:32p

Is 56 minutes enough time to connect at SFO? I'm also not familiar with IAD's evening rush (I usually fly out of DCA or BWI), so I am wary of my first flight being delayed. Also, might my 777 arrive into the international terminal at SFO, making my connection even shorter?

Thanks for any assistance!

If United is selling you the ticket, they think it's enough. I think it would probably be OK. It would help if there is another SFO-PDX that night, just in case - although UA would have to get you to PDX, they wouldn't have to cover your hotel in SFO if weather delays cause you to miss your flight (and weather can creep up in DC in June).

Your only worry is the weather. If they cut back to two runways, things get backed up. Usually all flights get impacted, so the connecting flight can be as late as the incoming flight if that happens. Even better for you, shorter flights often get held at the departure airport but longer flights may already be in the air and thus are closer to schedule.

If you are doing a round trip, note that this works against you going PDX-SFO-IAD. Summer at SFO can be foggy. More good news, we don't appear to be having a summer this year on the West coast.

Its a legal connection.

As long as you get out of IAD ontime, and SFO has no weather issues that evening you should be fine. But even with weather issues it could be your PDX flights aircraft might be late inbound anyhow so things work themselves out.

Quoting LAXintl (Reply 3):

Yeah, if it were ATL this would be different. On the down side, it's only fifty six minutes of plane spotting, if you're into that OP.

Walks between gates can be anywhere from 5 seconds to about 7 min, so you will make it.
