DFW Terminal D Intl Arrivals

Wed Jun 08, 2011 6:49 pm

Did my first international arrival through DFW Terminal D this week with mixed feelings.

AA international arrivals in Terminal A used to be a real pain. You'd arrive somewhere between the mid to lower gates, work your way up to what used to be the roof of Terminal A, walk a half mile to immigration, then work your way into the basement for bags and customs. I figured the new terminal would fix that. Wrong. AA is using the high gates for international arrivals in D, so you get to go up to the second floor, walk a half mile over to the low gate side of D, then go down into the basement. No difference really.

Terminal D has a transit lounge. Don't recall seeing one over in A. Was locked up though.

The facilities were new and nice enough, but Immigration staffing isn't right. Although they have what looks to be 100 stations, for US passengers, only about 4 were staffed. They had more agents working the non-US side, but that was backed up as well.

AA did great at getting the bags unloaded quickly. With the delay in getting through immigration, all the bags were on the belt.

Huge line for customs. 4 stations (all staffed) is not near enough for multiple aircraft arrivals. Took close to an hour to get through there.

When I came in on KLM last summer, there was ONE working EACH side.

Fortunately, the 332 is a smaller plane, but it was still ridiculous, especially for the BA pax who arrived right after us...

Ah yes, the FIS at DFW... They drive me nuts! As a crewmember, even we get stuck in long lines awaiting crew clearance, and the rules there are different from any other crew clearance check point I've been through in the past (including JFK, MIA, BDA, SJU and BOS). They require different forms for deadheading crew than the other FIS's, and at least at JFK they allow us to bring in (back) fruit that is labeled U.S -- not at DFW. It's minor, I know, but going through the FIS at DFW is my absolute least favorite one I've been through.

Now, we all know, AA has no control over how many people the government staffs the facility with, but unfortunately the long waits reflect poorly on AA, even though they have no control. As for gates, AA uses nearly every gate at some point throughout the day at DFW's terminal D, so it's just a crapshoot as to which gate you arrive at, but at least the FIS is centrally located in the terminal, minimizing the walk as much as possible.

That weird, i connected thru Dallas internationally a few months back, and it was extremely smooth and quick.

I arrived at 3PM (not sure if time of day has to do with anything), but the immigration was empty an there were at least 5 agent talking amongst themselves because they had nothing to do. Baggage was delivered promptly enough, and no lines at customs.

Usually when i fly to Latin America i connect thru MIA, and DFW is sheer heaven compared with MIA. Terminal D is very nice, its well appointed with nice artwork on the floor, unlike MIA sea shells (at least that what i think they are) ...

that being said, as much as possible i am doing all my booking thru DFW now..
Step into my office, baby

I agree with all of that, and I liked the experience overall. It's worlds better than EWR.
But I WAS aggravated that day that there was only one agent for each side.
I still like IAH best.
PHL sucks, MSP is tolerable, EWR is horrid, DFW and IAH are my favorite thus far.

I fly to DFW all the time and international arrivals are usually a breeze. Most of the time there are 8+ immigration offices for U.S. passengers, and it usually only takes 20-30 minutes to take care of customs. Probably just bad timing and luck for you.
Now more than ever, moving forward with the new American.

I thought US airports don't have (and operate) transit lounges with the exception of LAX because of 9/11 and increased security measures
FNT is the death knell for MBS and LAN because of WN's commitment

As was discussed in another thread, you have to separate the physical facility with current law/policy. The DFW transit lounge in Terminal D was closed and dark when I walked by, but it definitely exists.
