Best Looking First Gen Wide Body?

Mon Jun 13, 2011 1:59 am

I believe that first gen wide bodies like 747s, DC10s, L1011 and A300s, are some of the best looking airliners ever built!
Now I wonder, what first gen wide body do you think look the best?

For me:

The BIG ONE, THE BOEING 747!

Do not get me wrong, DC10s and L1011s have very good looking profiles but there is no airliner other than the Concorde the look better than a 747.

Agreed. The 747-100 was way better looking than any other first generation widebody from any manufacturer.

The DC-10 is my vote for the worst. And as lovely a lady as the 747 is, my heart strings sing for the elegance of the L1011.

The Il-86 is pretty sexy.

The L1011 is my favorite, with the 747-100 a close second. The DC-10 is definately the worst. While it's started to grow on me, the first time I saw a DC-10 I thought it looked like they just stuck that tail engine on there as an afterthought.

I couldn't possibly disagree more. The nose and windows of the DC-10 are a thing of beauty, unlike the lumpy and misshapen nose of the L-1011. The DC-10 get my vote for best, with the 747 2nd, the A300 3rd, and the L-1011 a distant 4th.

#1 The L-1011 is the second most beautiful airliner ever built. From the curved flight station windows to the No. 2 engine S-Duct all provide for smooth flowing lines. Even the flap torque boxes on the wings are smoothly contoured.

#2 The 747 the flat sides of the forward fuselage reminds me of a fish.

#3 The A300 looks like it was made my a consortium.

#4 The DC-10 just looks like it was tossed together. Flat flight station windows, straight through inlet for the No. 2 engine and giant flat coverings for the flap actuators that just hang under the wings.

The most beautiful airline (also a Lockheed) the 1049 Constellation! I guess that comes from the old Kelly Johnson saying "if it looks good it will fly good".

As an Airbus-fan I must admit that the early A300 was probably the ugliest plan ever built......
The Tristar is definitely one of the prettiest.

I agree that the Constellation is a beautiful plane...

...but I have to respectfully disagree about the L-1011's "flowing lines." I know a lot of people like the S-duct, but I think it makes the tail look huge and heavy, and not at all graceful.

This a plus for me, not a minus... I definitely like look of the straight-through duct.

Simplicity and lighter weight. The L-1011 has too many flap hinge fairings cluttering the wings.

I know beauty is in the eyes of the beholder. But.....

The S-Duct my make the tail look heavy but it is actually lighter. The DC-10's four titanium "banjo" fittings weigh more than the one fitting used on the TriStar.

The straight through duct of the DC-10 produces more drag, puts the engine will above the center line of the fuselage which means the wing engines have to be closer to the fuselage and required that the rudder not only be split but double articulated to provide enough rudder authority.

The DC-10 has two (2) flaps per wing while the L-1011 has four (4) flaps per wing.

Perfectly true, but as the thread is about visual aesthetics, I prefer the straight-through duct.

See above response.

I like the cleaner look of the DC-10's wing.

I would have to put the Tristar at #1 closely followed by the Queen of the sky.
DC-10 a big negative thumbs down and the A300 does not even count, for me anyway!

1. 747
2. A300
3. DC-10
4. IL-86
5. L-1011

With that said, I'd say that all of the first generation widebodies had at least some element of aesthetic goofiness about them. (I'd also like to give a shout-out to the hideous grandfather of widebody aircraft: the Bristol Brabazon)
Good night, and keep watching the skis. Uh, skies.

My rankings:
1. DC-10
2. 747
3. L-1011
4. A300
5. IL-86

The DC-10 and 747 have a certain amount of "majesticness" to them that the others do not, though I do find the L-1011 and A300 very attractive as well (sorry Russia).

The nose is the only thing about the L-1011 that turns me off. I just don't find it attractive at all.

My rankings would be:

1. The 747-200
2. The 747SP
3. The IL-86 I like how agressive and angry it looks.
4. The DC-10
5. The L-1011
6. The A-300
