BA Reward Flights - What's Going On?!

Tue Jun 14, 2011 9:16 pm

Is it me, or is there some clear belt-tightening with the release of Reward Seats with BA?

I was looking online last night at BA.com Redemption options and even though I was looking at April/May 2012, there was very little around. I also noticed that connecting in London from EDI, nearly all flights into London were LGW or LCY, no matter which London Airport the international flight was departing from. Additionally, there was never an option of departing EDI-LHR earlier than 5pm which is hardly the best option if you want to fly out of LHR the same day for most Transatlantic or European flights.

Not only that, the Reward Flight Availability Checker is a pile of Poo! It's unstable, unreliable and you end up wasting your time setting up your search options, only for it to either not have any options available despite suggestions from the calendar, or you get the dreaded "our systems have stopped responding".

Come on BA, you need to sort this out, or people are going to end up letting their BA Miles lapse as they have no real value for options that people want, even 11 months ahead, and start building loyality with an airline you can actually get rewards you want!

IMHO, BA miles are worthless (might be even worse than Delta) when trying to redeem on BA metal. Between the lack of availablity and the criminal taxes & fees that they charge, I would rather buy the ticket outright. Yet another reason why I avoid connections at LHR like the plague.

Their best value is redeeming them with other Oneworld carriers.

That they and every other airline HAVE to charge as its UK tax you mean?

What does mileage availabilities have to do with the "age old" (And out of date) saying of avoiding LHR like the plague?

That is why I only use my BA miles to book award flights on other OW carriers.

I've never had a problem redeming miles on BA or any other OW carrier, systems works fine for me, it's the bmi Star ones which are rubbish, found it almost impossible to get a seat back from Asia to the UK in October.

Funnily enough, I rarely have problems redeeming QF points (on the QF website) on BA flights. I can nearly always get availability on flights which my partner, using BA miles on the BA website, cannot.

The only annoying thing is that it does not expose the whole BA network to me (LCY to PMI springs to mind)
I only turn left when boarding aircraft. Well, mostly. All right, sometimes. OH OKAY - rarely.

I cant believe there was no availability at all between EDI-LON throughout all of April and May, normally there are seats available every day, seems like some sort of availability issue rather than no availability at all. You also have to remember that there are two school holidays within those months, Easter and the May Half term. These holidays can have a hige impact on availability.

The Reward Flight Availability checker is, I believe, only updated every 24hrs rather than being a "live" look at availability.

BA do charge airport fees and government taxes as all other airlines flying out of the UK do. The only reason any other airline would be different would be if they had higher or lower fuel surcharges.

When I got back from a trip the other day, I started browsing a trip to Sydney next May/June as a Miles-For-Upgrade option (which is how I normally redeem my miles)... only 1 route option for the whole two months from EDI-SYD, with an enforced 4 day stopover in Singapore. Pathetic, BA!

Does BA offer more availability the higher your Executive Club status? I know QF does (or rather, offers "Preferrential Access")

Does BA do the same?

This is one of the most popular routes for miles! Literally the minute the flights come into the system people book them. Not really pathetic!

You might well be right, I have Silver and seldom have a problem getting what I want when I need it.
