The Unbeatable Queen Of The Skies?

Mon Jul 04, 2011 4:31 pm

I mean no disrespect to anyones airliner feelings, but I just got off a Cathay 744, and to be honest it has been a while. I am still amazed of the comfort level! From engine start to landing, the noise was at a minimum, the aircon made more noise than the engines, and the landing gear made rotation and landing AND taxi almost feel like a dream.

I have flown on all Airbus and Boeings except for the A380 and B787(and 748:op), so I cannot comment on those, but if the A380 is equal or better than the 747 then I understand it's popularity.

But personally, I wish BA and CX would replace their 744 with 748s. The 744s are aging, but to me flying on it was a pleasure!

Am I wrong?

This is going to be a flamefest - stand well back

For me, the A380 is the indisputable Queen of the Skies. Nothing else (save for the A345/6) comes anywhere near.

I like a good Jumbo as much as anyone else but their day is long over now.

If you ask 500 professional pilots they likely would 95% agree. Reason why, the Boeing planes beg to be flown. They are a real mans airplane. The Bus as good as they are are not Airplanes for the crews, they are video programming games that need to be programmed and not flown.

The customer probably prefer the A380 because bigger is usually better, right?
Nah, performance is usually the better one. Ask any woman what is more important size or quality.

There will be only one "Queen of the Skies", the 747. IMO, no one else can stake claim to that moniker. The A380 lacks the graceful lines of the 747. The A380 could be the "Whale of the Skies" or "Moby Dick of the Skies" (It does have that retarded look because of the high forehead) but definitely not the "Queen of the Skies".

I will now don my flamsuit.

The 747 was the first true widebody passenger jet. It was lightyears beyond it's time, thus it has always been called, "The Queen of the Skies." Putting that name to the A380 doesn't hold water, mainly because the A380 is nothing truly revolutionary, other than it's a full double deck. The 747 made serious headway for the normal public to be able to afford flying.

Call the A380 the King of the skies if you wish...747 will always be the queen. Not because I'm partial (Sorta) but in all reality, it's really part of its name, and has been for 40+ years.

Hmm.. I thought it was settled with the A380 being the "King" or "Empress" now?

If we have to offend some people, might as well offend everyone.

There is no unbeatable queen of the skies. At best, there's a queen that has no successor yet, but like all other queens, her time will come. The B-17 and Lockheed Constellation were also titled queens of the skies...

For me, currently nothing beats the A380 upper-deck (and yes, I have flown Cathay, main-deck and upper-deck).

Yeah - no contest. The only thing that comes anywhere near the A388 and A340NG is the Tristar, for me. Everything else is just a plane.

And before anyone gets all up on me about the 777 - its my most flown WB by a mile. Have over 40 legs on EK's triple sevens alone, and have flown a bunch of times on QR, EY, NH, 9W, BR, BA, UA, CO, AC, CX, AF, KL, TG, MH and SQ's. 77W my favourite and hammers a 744 in my opinion - a far nicer experience, hands down. But not as nice as A340NG or A380 which are different class.

Exactly. In a perfect world, the "queen" of anything should be both beautiful and capable, whereas the "king" of anything only needs to be capable and looks don't matter for that job, hence the 747 is "The Queen of the Skies" and the A380 is "The King of the Skies".

Me too. I look forward to flying on the 747-8i. While I am admittedly a 777 fanboy, I'll always have a soft spot for the 747. Is it the Queen of the Skies? For me, that goes without saying. The Boeing 747 was the first widebody passenger jet ever built, and for 36 years it held the record of the largest commercial passenger airliner. Over 1400 examples have been built and the 747 line is still active.

The Boeing 747 revolutionised air travel like no other plane has to date. It was the 747 that allowed airlines to move a lot of people over a large distance, and that, in turn, made flying more affordable for the masses. Not to mention that it's still the prettiest subsonic commercial airliner ever built

For me personally, I'd choose to fly the 747 (or the 777, for that matter) over any other aircraft type. Long live the Queen.

I love the A380, but let's tell the thruth. The A380 was not the last of a long heritage of Clippers that Boeing design for Pan Am under Juan Tripp command. The A380, did not carry The Space Shuttle and it did carry four US Presidents on it's wings for 20 years. Now what jet did all that, the Boeing 747. The 747 will always be The Queen of The Skies, but the A380 is the Empress of The Skies.

Actually, in my experience, not really. It was a magnificent experience indeed, in it's own right, but yet also a very different thing altogether from either the 747 ot A380. It was the pampered treatment and thrill of flying at Mach 2 which was the experience......but yet the aircraft itself makes a 757 feel like a widebody.

As far as "Queen of the Skies" goes, I think that trying to rip that nickname from the 747 and place it on an A380 is full of fanboy BS. It's like trying to strip the DC-3 of "Gooney Bird" since a C-130 will carry more stuff into the same airfields.

To me, the A380 is "One Freaking Huge Jet." It's extremely comfortable and a marvel of engineering. It deserves a superlative status and nickname. I don't think it's all that ugly, nor do I find "Whale" derogatory.

But Queen of the Skies? No way. Come up with a new flattering nickname for it if you'd like, but "Queen of the Skies" it isn't.

Anyway, as Lady Gaga would say, don't be a drag, just be a Queen. Right now, calling the A380 the Queen of the Skies is not common vernacular. Nor is calling it the Whalejet (as much as some folks on here are trying to get that nickname to stick). I'd say the closest thing to a nickname that the A380 has is "Superjumbo". Over time, she may earn another, but right now, that's about it.

There is only one Queen of the skies, and it's the 747, a name she has worn for decades, and will still carry that name in the books 100 years from now. Calling the A380 a Queen would be like calling a Lexus "Spirit of ecstacy".

The A380 is a beautiful plane in my eyes, (maybe apart from the giant forehead) , and it will get a name that honours it eventually. I like "King of the skies" as the A380 doesn't really look like a lady, it's a bit more "macho" in it's appearance than the sleak soft lines of the Queen. And you know kings like to surround themselves with gorgeous women...and rule over them

Indeed. The A380 also lacks the character and the great history of the 747. It's simply a Whale Jet and a flying computer. Yes, it's extremly quiet and extremly comfortable. But it's not enough to be called "Queen of the Skies". And the 747-8i will be on the same level of this point, maybe even better - who knows?

The 747 remains the only Queen of the Skies. I'll always prefer flying on her over the A380 - as far as possible.

I like how you use sex to make your point about planes. Takes some creativity to think of something like that. but size is important just not the MOST important thing. a planer has to carry a good amount of pax and be efficient. If size had no barring at all then CRJs could be Queen. In conclusion, it's a combo of both probably 51% quality.

Can't we agree that the Boeing 747 is the Queen of the Skies forever.
The Airbus A 380 is the Empress of the Skies. Let us use these synonyms and everybody is happy.

But from the OP I agree that going from an even old 747 to a 777, or form an A380 to an A330 to keep neutral, is a significant downgrade in quality.

Sorry to all the A380 fanboys, but that plane will never be the "Queen of the Skies". That title is forever etched on the hulls of the 747.

Even though she wasnt a queen, I equate the 747's grace and beauty to Princes Grace Kelly of Monaco.

I can accept the A380 as the king of the skies, but only because of its size and capacity. However, the plane is still fat and ugly. Therefore, I see it as a "Flying Henry the Eighth"

The 747: The hands who designed it were guided by god.

When it comes to a quiet cabin and comfortable ride, I think that the A380 wins hands down. I flew on Qantas LAX-SYD on the A380 and never flew on a more comfortable and quiet airplane. On the way back the flight was on a B747-400. The ride was great, but just doesn't compare to the A380.

I can see that some of you above are arguing that the B747 is the "preferred" plane to fly by flight crew, but when it comes to passenger comfort, I think that the A380 is the plane to beat.

Not only will the 747 ALWAYS be queen of the skies, the 747 classic will hold that honor. PA even knew it and labeled one of their "acquired" AA birds as such:

Reason why, the Boeing planes beg to be flown.

I recently had a chat with a retired pilot (ex BA and Cargolux). He started on the VC10, the L1011, then B747-200 and finally B747-400. I asked him which his favourite plane was, and he said he couldn't say. However, he said that he can easily pick the one least favourite plane, and that was the B747-200. Not being a commercial pilot, I would assume that the -200 is "more a plane that begs to fly" than the -400, I wonder why he felt that way. I can't really remember the rationale, but I think he said it had to do with the 3-person cockpit... But then again, the other two (VC10, L1011) had that as well.... Quite interesting!
Side note: Imagine you start your career on a VC10, not a DHC8 or EMB135!!!!!

Re the B747-400: I love that bird, and are always happy if I can get onto one. However, even with LH they now feel old'ish and noisy. Even my partner, who can probably just identify a "jumbo jet" and an A380, but nothing else, felt on recent trips that B747 and B777 are significantly more noisy than the A330 we flew on. And I didn't ask him - he just said "it is so much quieter on this plane" (A330). I don't mind the noise - I have my noise canceling headsets anyway, and I still love the 747, not so much the 777 though...

As far as "Queen of the Skies" goes, I think that trying to rip that nickname from the 747 and place it on an A380 is full of fanboy BS. It's like trying to strip the DC-3 of "Gooney Bird" since a C-130 will carry more stuff into the same airfields.

I may not have worded it the same way but I think this sums up my opinion, unfortunately for the A380 backers, they never put a name out there, they allowed the WhaleJet to stick without offering up an alternative, whether it was done in jest or those who were attempting to bash the a/c. Each a/c name is usually unique and we already have a Queen of the Skies, can't have two.

The Queen of the Skies mantra given to the 747 survived not just because it was the largest pax plane in service but also because of what it meant to aviation, certainely one could have made the same argument for the Concorde - Supersonic -, 767 - ETOPS to the masses -, even the 737 has some distinction, but no one ever tried to name them the Queen, so I think we need to find a unique name for the A380.

One thing I have never understood is why the Dreamliner has not had a nickname throw at it, if we are doing polls I have a suggestion - NightLiner -.

I'd prefer some TWA tea.

For me, the A380 is the indisputable Queen of the Skies.

I'll put my hand up to vote with that.

All that legroom, all that standing space, all that headroom, all that extra baggage space, no noise. The A380 is good to every passenger whether they are in First, Business or Economy. No other aircraft can do that.
and with that..cabin crew, seats for landing please.

I agree. The 747 is, and always will be the Queen of the Skies. I don't care if the A380 is bigger or more advanced, it can't be the Queen because there is already one.

What do you mean by "all that legroom"? Seat pitch is the carrier's decision. And as far as I know, all current A380 operators have either 31 or 32 inch pitch in Y class, just like all their other aircraft. So where is "all that legroom"?

Has to be the 747. Look at the lines on that ! The 748 is even better.

Whilst the A380 is an absolute marvel she's not really a 'looker' is she.

Like others have said; it's all a matter of personal preference, although the 747 is going to win the lion's share of votes for now. Personally, I've never liked the look of the 747; the hump of the upper deck just looks like a bizarre interruption to what would be a clean line flowing from back to front, the high placement of the cockpit which results in a rather large, ungainly nose does nothing for me.

I have no problem with the A380's looks, and the mid-placement of the cockpit and the resulting five-head doesn't seem to deserve the criticism it gets in comparison to the 747's arrangement. If anything, the A380's real problem is that visually it appears a bit too short, though not to the extreme of the 747SP; a stretch version would probably make more visual sense proportionately, but who'd really need a monster that size?

Ok, having just completed my first A380 flight (SIN-SYD QF 32, in J), I can now feel qualified to answer this question.

The 747 is, and always will be, the Queen of the Skies. It revolutionized air travel on an entirely different level than the A380 does, and really brought on the slew of aircraft improvements we saw in rapid succession (and they're embodied in the different versions of the 747 itself).

Most importantly, the Queen of the Skies moniker is a title. Anyone who takes the term Jumbo Jet, and uses it to mean the A380, is taking a title that very distinctly belongs to the 747 (to anyone who knows aviation), and ripping it off of that.

With that said, the A380 is a marvel on just about all fronts (except its looks, IMO), and rightfully deserves its own title. To take the Queen of the Skies from the 747 does both aircraft a disservice. My only complaint with the A380 is its sterility. It's so quiet, it's so massive, it just doesn't have any character. Those are all good qualities, and lead to an unparalleled in flight experience for passengers, but the plane enthusiast in me can't help but look at it with some scorn.

The next generation of aircraft are all technological marvels, and they will go down in history as advancing the commercial aviation industry firmly into the 21st century, but one thing is for sure: they won't be worshiped in the way airliners like the 747 or MD-80/DC-9 were. They're computers that fly. They're designed to remove the occupants as much as possible from their environmental surroundings. You don't FEEL the plane the way you once did. That type of flying is fading quickly into the night, and for plane nuts such as ourselves, a part of the aviation experience is dying.

All of those advances fall firmly within the natural order of things, and are truly improving commercial aviation in nearly every sense, but as the aircraft that brought the world a brand new flying culture die off, there will be a lasting nostalgia/sentimentality that people will fight tooth and nail to preserve.

That is why the A380 can never be the Queen of the Skies. It's bigger, it may be better, but it will never compare to the 747. In the words of F9, it's a whole different animal (whale).

Cheers,
Cameron

I've yet to climb aboard an A380, but lookswise I don't believe it merits any kind of "royal" title...maybe the "bulldog of the skies", but to me it's just plain ugly. The Queen of the skies will always be the 747 (all models, 748 included) - you just can't beat its sleak lines.

I have spoken!!

Quoting windshear (Thread starter):
From engine start to landing, the noise was at a minimum

I flew a DL 744 DTW-AMS a couple of weeks ago and then a A330 AMS-DTW a few days later. I couldn't believe the difference in the noise levels, the 747 was significantly noisier. Of the widebodies currently in widest use I prefer to fly on 1) A330/340 2) 777 3) 747 4) 767. The 747 looks impressive when coming into land and take-off, the A380 just looks BIG.....very impressively big   I think the A330 is a graceful looking aircraft.
