I would fly QF, just so you get to fly 3 airlines on the one trip. I cant say which one would be better, though they would both be very good.

I fly both on a very regular basis for work...while I now fly J, I used to fly Y, so I can offer opinions on both.

I prefer CX as an airline, but dislike their A330s. Many of them are run down and just not as comfortable. Because of this, I would choose QF. If it were 747 vs. 747, I would recommend CX, but...in this case, QF wins.

I think both are good airlines, although I never flew on QF before. CX uses the A333 with their famous Y class seat which does not recline. If this bothers you, I would choose QF. CX has a 2x4x2 seating so if you are lucky you only have one person sitting next to you. On the 747 only the last few rows are 2x4x2.

Then again, CX has just started sending its brand new A333s with the new J product to SYD (B-LAL). So as long as you get the right flight (IIRC CX100/101), you'll get a new plane.

So it comes down to whether you like 747s or A330s better. QF's 744s are by no means new.
It's all about the destination AND the journey.

CX has not used the regional business class product to Australia for years. All of them tend to be fairly new as they have the higher takeoff weights allowing for more passengers and cargo.

Last aircraft I flew to SYD was less than a month old.

For the soft product, CX is outclassing QF.
