Rare Flights In Europe: Suggestions?

Tue Jul 12, 2011 3:17 am

and by rare I mean 5th freedom flights or one that involves rare A/C such as the A300, A310, 737 Classics, 747SP/-100/-200/-300, etc or an interesting airline. I am not familiar with Europe and will be visiting numerous European nations in 2012 and I'm looking for any suggestions at all. Preferably flights that aren't typical in the US or North America. I'd like to keep it within the UK, France, Germany, Italy and Scandinavia as we will be visiting those countries but if there's anything interesting, feel free to share it!

A couple between the countries you will be visiting:

Ethiopian fly ARN - FCO a few times a week
Kuwait fly FCO - CDG, usually on an A300

Not the all the countries you wanted:
FRA-MAD vv with LA
FRA-GVA vv with KU (GVA is still close to France at least)
VIE-ZRH ow with KE
MAD-AMS ow with KE

I also found a PK flight on CDG-FRA on day 7 but it only appears in the timetable but not in the availability list. Might be without local traffic rights.

Out of ZRH we used to have lots of connections with FRA (UL), LON (HM), MAN (CX, SQ), AMS (CX, TG, SQ), CDG (SA) but all of them gone and changed to turn around only.

maybe you can try to get a flight with KLM on a Fokker70 oder Fokker100 before they go out of service. These planes are for sure not often found but KLM still offers many routes with them

The swedish airline Nextjet is the only operator in the world today who operates the ATP. They have several domestic routes flown with this aircraft. Maybe something to look in to.

Not what you mean, but you could easily - and sometimes very cheaply, e.g. from £19.95 one-way - fly the L4T, D28, and SWM with IOM-based Manx2.

Been on that flight three days ago (Sat), it was an early A340-313 (9K-ANB).

During the summer months it is the A343, in Winter the A300. I will ride it again when the A300 is back in September. Business fare was only CHF 289.

Ideally that flight can connect to the Pakistan A310, flying FRA-AMS. I need to check which days though and if a connection is possible on Saturdays.

Is there any date when this will happen? Still missing the F-70 on my list, including the 747-400M....

F70s fly multiple times per day AMS-NWI, but the cost of a one-way is prohibitive. Unless you have some Skyteam (DL) miles to burn...

2. or what about HELLENIC IMPERIAL flying B737 op. by Aurelia of Lithuania from London to Athens? http://www.hellenicairways.com/
3. maybe VIKING HELLAS A320/MD83 from Frankfurt to Göteborg or Malmö? http://www.flyviking.gr/
4. fancy BIG ones? AIR CHINA A330 from MUC to ATH...

Njoy your time in Europe...

Some more ideas:
What about Flying Loganair DHC-6 Twinotter between Glasgow and the island of Barra including landing on the beach ? Can be booked via flyBE's website but better be booked well in advance. If you should happen to stay on Barra for any reason, also a shorter roundtrip BRR - BEB (Benbecula) - BRR is possible (2 weeks ago 7 out of 10 pax on that flight BRR to BEB flew straight back to BRR w/o leaving the a/c).

Or fly along the coast of Norway on WF's multi-stop services like KKN (Kirkenes) to TOS with 5 stops on a Dash8-200. Other (shorter) flights also available, some runways no longer than 800 m.

Not inter-Europe, but Air Transat still operates A310 on their routes to Europe.

Thanks. I'm interested on flying with Ethiopian on the route mentioned, however, the flight time seems to be inconvenient, but I could make an exception.

Nice.

I'd love to fly with SQ and of course the 77W.

Nice. Never knew this route existed, I'll look into that.

As far as I know PK does not have traffic rights on the FRA-AMS sector?

You should check out this thread, which lists all 5th freedom flights in Europe.

List Of All 5th Freedom Flights In Europe.

Here are some other ideas:

- The ET flight ARN-FCO is operated by a 757, so that may not be so exciting for you, considering that 757s are
common in the US.

- 737 classics shouldn't be to hard to find. LH operates them, as do BA ex LGW. SK should also operate some
domestic Norway flights. You could combine that with a flight on the Wideroe Dash-8, as HT said. I'm sure that would
be a fascinating experience, as Norway is a very beautiful country (But sadly, one of the most expensive countries too!)

- SK operates the rare 736 on a lot of destinations from ARN and OSL, if that's what you would want.

- Sweden also offers quite much on the domestic side. Nextjet has the very rare ATP (as said before) and Skyways operates the Fokker 50. Golden Air operates Saabs (both 340s and 2000s) on domestic routes.

- Sun-Air operates the Dornier 328 (both the prop and the JET version) on some routes from BMA, including BMA-HEL and BMA-BLL.

- 747 classics would hard, if not impossible to fly on a intra-Europe hop.

- Brit Air (France) and Air Nostrum (Spain) operates the CRJ1000 on regional routes.
Flown on: ATR72-5, E190, E195, A319/20/21, A332/3, A380, 734/6/G/8/9ER, 744, 752/3, 763ER/4ER, 772ER/LR, Q300, RJ100
