Best Way From Shenzhen To HKG?

Tue Aug 09, 2011 7:23 am

I have a flight ex-HKG next month, but I'll be in Shenzhen. How is the ferry service? Would it be better to cross the land border and take the train to HKG?

The ferry is probably the easiest.

I did the other two options, too:

Train: We took the airport bus from Shenzhen airport to the main station, which is in front of the border. The border building is huge and very crowded. Then from there I took the train to HK. It's fine, but crowded and a little difficult with bags. Huge lines, but we had German passport so we got a quicker one... In total count at least 2 hours to get to HK, more if you want to continue to HK island or something.

back we took the bus option. There was a company promoting cheap fares on busses to Shenzhen airport, directly from HK island. Well, the bus was not direct.
We got tickets, a colored sticker and all people boarded a single bus, no matter if destination was Shenzhen town, Shenzhen airport, Guangzhou or whatever. We were brought to the border and had to take our bags and go through HK customs. Then we boarded the bus again and drove a few meters to the Chinese border. Again took our bags, passed chinese border, and then ... well then the bus was not there. But there were dozens of other busses..... It was completely confusing. But bus company staff took good care of us and recognized us due to the sticker we had. They gave us bottles of water and told us to wait. No English... We waited more than 30 minutes and then they told us to follow a guy with a big green sign. We had to walk a huge way to the bus parking on the other side of the multi-lane road with all our bags and finally boarded a small bus which brought us to the airport. Price was ok, but it was promoted as an express service, presumbably direct, and in the end we had to leave the bus 3 times, take all our bags, walk a lot, and it took a lot of time.....

If you're not that money conscious take the ferry....

I would try to avoid doing the border crossing as an individual lost amongst the thousands of Chinese crossing that day who know the procedure, can read all the signs, and are in a hurry.

If possible, I recommend a driver who can pick you up in Shenzhen and drive you to the airport. He will know the way through, and you never have to get out of the car. If you are visiting a company inShenzhen, ask if they can arrange a driver. It will cost more, but you will avoid all the hassle and have a direct ride to the airport without any confusion.

I have never tried the Shenzhen to airport ferry. Maybe it is less hassle because you will not get the huge masses of people you find on the train. I once tried the Hong Kong-Macau ferry and I was stunned by the thousands of people lined up to go through passport control in HKG.

I just looked at your profile. Cost may be an issue, and you may want some adventure. Negotiating the border on your own will be an adventure! Plan on several hours of adventure.

There is a direct ferry from Hong Kong Airport to Shenzen. There is also a ferry from the HK island ferry terminal. I would do the ferry or get a car through your hotel that can drive you. It is worth the money and you avaoid a lot of headaches with the crowds and border crossing.

Thanks! I actually speak reasonably fluent Mandarin so signs and language should not be an issue. I will probably take the ferry from here.

Honestly, even without mandarin it's no issue at all for an average experienced traveller to make the border by bus or train... At the border it's signposted in English anyway everywhere. at the airport in Shenzhen too, and you will easily find the bus to the central station. It's just that it takes a terrible lot amount of time and can be exhausting if you have bags. But it's ok if you're on a budget and keen for something more aventurous.

Keep in mind that HK is not considered as China in terms of visas, you will need a multiple (or at least double entry) visa, if you want to go from China to HK and back. A single entry visa will not work.

Is it Shenzen town to HKG airport you're travelling to? The train would require at least 2 changes, so from simplicity's point of view the direct ferry would make most sense.

I'm travelling from Shenzhen to HKG Airport, yes. I also have a multiple entry visa.

I actually am going to Hong Kong's CBD on Saturday as part of my job, so I'm going to get to try both methods now. Thanks everyone!

If you travel by ferry, you might get a refund of your airport departure tax.

November 2010, a few days after the Macau GP, I ferry'd from Macau to HKG. After alighting at the Sky Pier, there was a short walk to a ferry-only check-in area. I was pleasantly suprised when the CX agent directed me to the Airport Tax Refund Counter. After that, I boarded the train which dropped me off after Hong Kong Passport control.

The Hong Kong airport is most efficient and CX's check-in staff are Top Notch.
