ORD To MDW, How Much Time Should I Plan?

Thu Aug 11, 2011 9:18 am

Hi guys,

I am arriving at ORD at 2pm and the flight from MDW leaves around 7pm. Is that enough time for connection?

How long does it take to immigrate in ORD and then get down to MDW?

Any feedback and help is appreciated.

Official times:
45 minutes ORD to L,
25 minute L to MDW

Limited experience here, but was quick enough to leave no negative memory and to reach my onward connection (from another concourse at ORD).

With 5 hours to make this connection you would be able to have a quick peek around the compact city´s center before heading out to MDW.

Yes, that's what I found as well. And there is even a direct shuttle between ORD and MDW which takes roughly an hour.

So I guess I will be fine if my flight to ORD is on time

Yeah, maybe.

Thanks.

I'd plan for an hour and a half to two hours on public transportation to be safe. The shuttle can be much quicker than that or no quicker depending on rather fickle Chicago traffic.

It is not too expensive. 'only' $16 each... Coule be worse.

Do not bother with the shuttle. Using the L is actually surprisingly tolerable, will only set you back $2.25, and likely won't take much longer at that time of day. 90 minutes should do it, including the transfer. Take the blue line from O'Hare (it only goes one way from there) and get off at Clark, follow the signs to transfer to orange line (also only goes one direction from there), then ride that to the end of the line.

I'd say you're quite fine on time unless you're more than an hour late arriving, then it might get tight.

Many thanks for that.

We will decide on short notice if to go by train or shuttle. Depending if our flight is on time and when we got through immigration.

Immigration lines vary by the time of day, but on average take about an hour. It takes about 45 min from ORD on the "L" (blue line) to get to the loop - add 15 min for the transfer from Int. Terminal 5 to Terminal 2 (closest to the "L" station). Transfer point to MDW (orange line) is Clark/Lake Station. Keep in mind the blue line is underground and the orange iis above the ground. Once on the orange line you need about 25-30 to get to MDW. MDW has one security entry area and at times it can be busy - get to the far right side as it branches out at the end, so it is the fastest to go through.

Wilco: I agree with other posters that five hours is way more than enough time. 2 PM is a decent time to arrive traffic-wise, and if anything no matter which mode of transportation you choose you will likely end up waiting a while somewhere. If you are very bold you could venture to downtown, but you wouldn't have time to see much. If anything have one single thing you want to see and do that. My favorite thing in the city is the Museum of Science and Industry which has the U-505. It's an amazing and sobering experience to walk through.

Whatever you decide I hope you have a great trip, and you should relax about the connection; it's a piece of cake!

Did this a couple weeks ago.

45/25 is accurate although the O'Hare to Downtown leg has potential for a few minutes delay. Also add in about 10 minutes to get upstairs from the Subway to the Loop "L" station. Then you can have another 10 minutes or so waiting for the next train.

There are elevators to get from the subway to the L which will be easier for carrying baggage. If you do leave the train system, you will probably have to pay a new fare, but I am no longer local in that area so I am not 100% sure about that.

The fare is $2.25 and you will need to use cash to dispense a fare card. The minimum for using a credit card or ATM card is $5. The smallest bill I had was $5 so I overpaid for the single ride, but it is good for about 15 months for the remaining value.
135 hrs PIC (mostly PA-28) - not current. Landings at MDW, PIA, JAN.

Nah, won't do that. Have been to Chicago about 10 times so far  So it is just for the connection as I fly out of DUS and there was only YYZ, ORD and EWR and ORD was the winner here

Good to hear. I like it when things go smooth. Now LH only has to be on time

Thanks. But it all worked out perfectly. Pretty easy...

But never ever order a Burger at Illinois Bar & Grill at MDW airport! Such a greasy, disgusting burger... :S
