KLM Asia Diverted To MKE

Sun Aug 14, 2011 4:37 am

As I was sitting on the ground at MKE waiting to leave for OMA (due to the weather over Chicago) I saw a KLM Asia 747 land. Any ideas where it was coming from? I'm assuming it's destination was ORD.

AMS most likely. It's worth noting that it wasn't actually a KLM Asia flight, just one of the aircraft painted as KLM Asia that can be used on services to Taiwan.
Why do Aerospace Engineering students have to turn things in on time?

KL0611-13aug PH-BFC "city of calgary" was diverted to MKE due to thunderstorms at the ORD area and consequently holding delays at ORD...after refuelling, continued for ORD and AMS...times at MKE were 1823z-2100z...

I was on this flight yesterday - KLM 611. We were scheduled to arrive into ORD 20 mins ahead of schedule, and then it became an on-time arrival, followed by a 30 min delay, then to an unknown holding pattern...the hailstorms were awful over ORD and so they shut down the airport.

After circling around Madison, WI, I noticed on the flight info map on the PTV that our route showed us heading into MKE, and after scratching my head several times the captain came on the PA system and announced that we had to divert to Milwaukee in order to refuel and wait until ORD opened.

I recall the landing in Milwaukee was rough, which I imagine was because of the short runway. We sat on the tarmac for about 30 minutes, waiting for the ground staff, then taxied over to the Delta terminal (I am completely unfamiliar with MKE) and refueled for another 30 mins. After a bit we were cleared to land at ORD, so we lifted off from MKE and I was on the SHORTEST B747 ride I will probably ever take to get from MKE to ORD.

Needless to say, ORD was a mess because of the weather delays, and it seemed like every Int'l flight arrived simultaneously, delayed. Our gate was occupied, so we had to wait ANOTHER 30 mins parked outside T5 until it opened up.

It wasn't my ideal way to end a 16 hr journey (I had started my day early originating at LHR, followed by a 3h40min layover in AMS) but I had a fantastic experience with KLM. Plus, I took tons of pics, perhaps I should write a TR??
