Questions About HKG-Macau Ferry

Mon Aug 29, 2011 7:18 am

I hope there are some Hong Kong residents or frequent flyers who can help me plan a trip from HKG to Macau.

I will be arriving in HKG the second week of October, scheduled in at 0630. Since it will be a long flight, I can't really be sure if I will really be within about a 2 hour window plus or minus. I want to take the ferry direct from HKG to Macau.

Do I have to go through Honk Kong passport control on the way in? I presume I do because I have to collect my baggage which is after passport control. Do I then immediately go to the ferry terminal and exit Hong Kong? Is there a way to bypass that and still get my baggage? I am hesitant to make a ferry booking ahead of time because my arrival time on a long flight is uncertain. Do I really need a booking, or is the ferry like a bus where you just show up and wait for the next departure?

Returning from Macau I want to go back to HKG and check in to the Airport Hotel. When I get off the Macau ferry at HKG what country am I in? HKG, Macau, or some intermediate transit area? I need to get past HKG passport control to get to the hotel.

I suppose I could work all this out on the fly, but it will be easier if I know what I need to do.

No. On the way down to passport control, prior there is an area for ferries to China/Macau (its on the right as I recall).

According to their website you can buy ticket at the airport, however I also note looking at the schedule - the first ferry to Macau is not till 10AM. If that is full, you will have another painful hour to wait.

Here is the timetable

Frankly, if you do arrive a 630am, I would probably clear and head to the city (you can take a taxi for about HKD$40 or the airport express train) and catch a earlier ferry -- they run every 15-minutes after 7am.

Yes if you intend to use the airport hotel - you need to formally enter Hong Kong.

You are technically not in a country. You have exited Macau but not entered Hong Kong. But you will need to clear HKG immigration to go to any airport hotel in HKG (the Novotel is the best!)...HKG immigration is amongst the easiest in the world - they'll let pretty much anyone in with no questions asked!
