Equipment Change

Tue Aug 30, 2011 2:47 pm

Hi guys

Have you guys booked a particular flight just to fly on that aircraft type and there you go, the airline comes and ruin your plan by up or downsizing the aircraft type to another?

So far I had experienced 3 times.

Spanair's MD-82, replaced by A320 So disappointed !
Etihad's A346, replaced by A345
Japan Airlines 77W replaced by B772

Let's hear yours!

Cheers
Ryan

Had it happen a couple of times - both times involving a 747-200 .

AC subbed a 747-200 combi for an A330

On another flight, Instead of getting the Air Atlanta 747-200 that had been operating the flight for several weeks, got subbed a Britannia 737-800

Still never flown on a -200....
Next flight: Feb 2012 - BHX-CPH-BHX - SK MD87 / CRJ900

I don't often book for a type, and the few times I've done it it's worked out, but here's an amusing anecdote. Last summer I flew ORD-CLT on US, originally scheduled to be an A320, downsized to a 319. Just as I reached the end of the jetway, a fellow came out of the plane, complaining he had boarded, gotten all the way to the back, and discovered his row didn't exist! When you see me on these boards complaining about the incompetence of US, it's because I see stuff like this, or have it happen to me, literally every time I've taken them.

The same flight number continued from CLT to somewhere in Florida. The lady next to me had booked it as a thru-flight. When we got to CLT it was announced the thru-pax would have to change planes due to the sub...and she got PISSED. Mumbling 4-letter words, slamming her stuff around... was really happy when that line started moving and she got away from me.

Just curious - how different are these inside? I mean, can you really tell the difference between the 345 and 346 from a passengers POV?

I sat next to a passenger on MH once on the LHR-PEN-KUL flight, who hadn't realised until he was about to get off at PEN that the flight was not direct. He got very annoyed about why he had not been told about the stop (despite the crew repeatedly mentioning about the stop in PEN, and that the flight was always scheduled to stop there, as that's where we were getting off). His argument to the stewardess was "This never happens on Emirates!"

I've had the exact same experience on a MAD-BCN flight. I still have to fly the MD82.

Me and Akhmad (fellow member of A.net) were on a A380 flight from LHR to CDG. We both were very disappointed with the A321.

IAD-LAX, booked in biz on an old 777 of United. Two days before the trip, it was switched to a new biz version of the 777 and the day of the flight, it was switched to a domestic configured 777 with terrible domestic seats. So excited and then so let down. Thank you, United!

Also, was booked in biz on a 777 from ATL-LAX. It was switched to a 764 that morning. I was pissed that it would be the domestic configured interior only to find out that this bird was the 2nd 764 with the new biz interior. Super excited after being let down.

One time flying ROC-JFK on DL (I think it was December 2010) my flight was originally on a Comair CRJ-900, then downgraded to a CRJ-100, and finally changed to a Chautauqua ERJ-145.

Way back when (I guess 2006 or 2007) in the summer, I had booked DL to go PTY-ATL and it was a 767-300 (domestic config) initially, but got downgraded to a 757-200. As much as I love the 757, it was a bit of a letdown. On the bright side, when I got to the airport I learned it was N900PC, the Shanghai plane, which was pretty cool.

Now that I think about it, on that same trip I had booked from JFK (as the origin, instead of LGA) because JFK-ATL was a 75X, and that got downgraded to a MD-88.

Well, you can tell the difference especially sitting at the back when you look out of the window. On the A345, the wings are closer to you than 346. But in the plane itself, its the same interior, only thing is if you walk around, you will realize that the 346 is longer, these two are the only differences I guess.

Me too, its so hard to find the MD-82, however on the same day I managed to get the A320 in Star Alliance and MD-87 which was even harder to fly on, so that day wasn't that bad.

That's really unlucky! I guess the A380 went tech?

I was supposed to fly from Anchorage to Valdez and back on ERA Convair 580s, and both flights were changed to DHC-8s. Also, my first Eastern A300 flight was supposed to be LGA to MIA, and it was changed to a 727-25C.

- United B777-200 (Old 2-5-2 Config) to the new (3-3-3) Config.

Was originally assigned to a bulkhead seat, due to the swap, I was upgraded to Economy Plus. Though I turned it down for a bulkhead seat next to my parents which opened up. If you read my signature "My worst nightmare is not getting a window seat!" was getting real. Thank goodness for UA's app, a window seat opened up less than 30 minutes before boarding and my 100% record of Window Seats on all flights still remains.

-United A320 to an A319

Not a big deal, our seats were the same.
It's a cultural thing.

Oh, the many times I have come so close to finally setting foot on the A333, only to find myself on a 763.
Either this is something AC likes to do frequently, or I am just really unlucky. The worst part is, I keep booking flight specifically trying to get an A330, and 100% of the time, I find a 767 waiting for me at the gate. Don't get me wrong, I love every moment I spend on these beautiful aircraft, but I so wish that I could finally cross the 330 off my list! I'm about ready to give up!

In 1980 PanAm substituted a 707-320 all coach configuration for a scheduled 747-100 on a JFK to Rome flight. Even as a non-rev there was enough open seats that we still made the flight.

A Few weeks ago, I had an Aeroflot A321 changed to an A320...

The connecting flight stayed A330, and although I love the A330, I was definitely hoping for a swap to Il96

Other than that, the only other one I can remember is AC swapping a 767 for an A320, which was a disappointment.

In 2007 I booked DUB-LHR-IAD-MYR return on BD and UA, and for the LHR-IAD legs I booked 772 flights. On the return journey, at IAD the screen said Boeing 777-200, and when I walked down the jetway I was greeted by a 767-300ER. I was bumped up to J though, so wasn't all that bad.

When my school booked a trip from DUB-EWR-PIT and back on CO, they had a mix of ER4s and DH4s on the EWR-PIT flights, and we were booked on one of the ER4 flights until CO decided to make the EWR-PIT route entirely DH4...

I've been very lucky, yet to experience equipment change (going tech yeah, but replaced with same aircraft)

However, and I'm tempting fate just by typing this, I am booked DXB-SYD in February in Business Class on the A380 (booked this just to fly the A380) what is the betting now it is changed to a 777 at the last minute?

I was excited to fly on a CX A340-600 but ended-up with a B744. Luckily I have flown on A340-600 already.

In my experience in the Australian airports, Qantas ALWAYS changes the aircraft in the last minutes - 737 to 767 and vice versa.

SAS MD-81 subbed by an A321 and MD-82

Yeah, back in the summer of 2007 I booked an LH flight FRA-LHR specifically because it was scheduled to be operated by the A300-600, a type I had never, and have still never flown on. I didn't even know that it wouldn't be the A300-600 until we started boarding as I had chosen an "A" seat online, which didn't change on my boarding pass at check-in. I definitely wasn't happy being dropped off by the bus at the bottom of the stairs leading to an A321! Lufthansa wasn't my friend that day, and I haven't called them or sent Christmas cards since!!

I booked a DL DTW-JFK used my miles, to fly STL-DTW-JFK r/t because it was an A330-300, and it downgraded to an A332. I had already been on an A332 and wanted to have the "say so" of being on a -300 version. This has yet to happen

I was booked on a PTV 763 LAX-ATL, swapped to a non PTV.

I booked also using miles to fly DL/AS to ANC, and routed myself to get the 737-900, have yet to be on that as well as a 75X on Delta, Alaska has changed this to a 738 (already been on it) and from a 75X to a regular 757 (no PTV)

AC E90 -> 320 -> 763

Was booked on a 11am YYZ-YUL (AC408), with the sole purpose of flying an E-Jet for the first time, when they were relatively new.

Unfortunately there was some kind of storm the previous night and apparently the stranded passengers were put on my flight, thus overbooking the flight by 12 people and bumping me off. Was moved to an earlier 10:30am extra section flight on an A320, but they "accidentally" assigned a Jetz A320 in charter configuration (how did they manage to do that?!) to that flight, and only the first 64 passengers were able to board it--I was not one of the first 64.

Then I got put on standby for the 4pm AC416 flight, which left after 5pm after two gate changes and the ensuing confusion, and was on an old ex-CP 767 that wasn't yet retrofitted to the new cabin.

I was never offered any compensation because they claimed that it was "weather related", which is quite funny as I saw my flight leave without me. Truly a world class airline and deserving of their title of being the best airline in North America. I'm sure they'll win more customers with their practice of inconveniencing even more passengers by putting what's supposed to be stand-by passengers ahead of confirmed ones, and bumping confirmed passengers off with no compensation offered whatsoever.

Other than that,

KE 333->744 (not a huge deal)

AZ M80->321

OZ 735->734
