DL 369 - MGA To ATL - Diverted Back To ATL

Tue Aug 30, 2011 6:36 pm

I am currently sitting at MGA waiting to depart for ATL on DL 370. We have been delayed from 1:15p to 5:00p (which I still don't even believe that). When I pulled up DL 369 to see if it had departed, what struck me is that the flight actually took off on time, only to get to South Florida and return all the way back to Hartsfield.

Anyone know what is going on? I am more just curious than anything else. These things happen.

Also, why not divert to MIA?

Unless it is a medical or real safety issue, better to go back to home base where you have spare aircraft and the capacity to fix it with with your own parts and mechanics.

BTW, how is this flight doing LF wise?
When in doubt, hold on to your altitude. No-one has ever collided with the sky.

Make sense, but if it isn't a "REAL" safety issue, wouldn't it be a quick fix at a pretty major base like MIA.

My only emergency landing was ATL to FWA and we diverted to EVV - even there they could find a mechanic on a Friday night nonetheless to fix the APU oil pressure issue that resulted from severe turbulence. It just strikes me as odd that with DL 369 it wasn't THAT much of a emergency that they could fly two hours back, but it was too much of an emergency to not fly two hours forward and then return.

But like I said, more just curious than anything else. I have got free WiFi, a laptop full of movies and TV shows, and I am pretty sure I'll be the calmest out of everyone here

Not sure what LF means? Are you asking about the loads? My flight down had 20 people on it (which was nice for me, but not good for DL I imagine). This flight looks a bit more full, but still, maybe 30 or 40 people in the area.

Assume that you are on a 73G....with 40 people that can't be good.

Yep. But supposedly the Friday - Monday flights have higher loads according to people I knew who have flown on those days. My flights were Tuesday/Thursday flights. Which I imagine they have cargo revenue as well, but who knows. Either way, I doubt it is a route that is printing money.

A 738 actually. About 90 people are booked on the flight today, not 40. how many show up and get on the plane is a different story.

As to whay it went back to Atlanta, there are a myrid of reasons as to why they would do this. Even with a "minor fix" as we may call it and it would seem to make sense to divert to MIA where you could use a contractor, it's still much easier to get back to your base. If things go south, they will have a spare a/c available to operate the flight.

That's about right. More have showed up since I first posted. It doesn't look like 90 yet, but who knows what bar everyone is "waiting out" the delay

Figured. Just curious as to what this actual reason was in this case.

The aircraft has pushed out of ATL and its new arrival time is 16:57 Gate 3 in MGA. It looks like it only has a handful of pax on board. It is ship N3736C. I flew her this year from SKB-ATL. If I remember correctly she did not have AVOD just overhead screens but that was back in April. Hope they comp you some drinks! Safe travels!

I was afraid of that! I love Delta's AVOD system on the 738s. Ohh well. I am not a big pusher for comps, I never really see how this is the airline's fault. Stuff just happens sometimes. Thanks for the info though.

Anyone still have any info as to what caused the initial divert?

Thanks. Never got a PM before.

Bummer. But no worries.

Sorry not sure? She completed two roundtrips back to back to UVF and then spent the night in ATL. I believe that this is indeed the same aircraft that started the day. I may be wrong but it appears to have overnighted at E15.

Ha! I found this hilarious!

Apparently N3736C has got some crazy endurance and ceiling capabilities

EDIT: Due to the compression, you can quite make it out as well, but it says the altitude is 102,600 feet (or FL102?  wink  ) and the Time in Flight is 365,203 hours and 24 minutes.

Thread title is confusing "DL 369 - MGA To ATL - Diverted Back To ATL"

Why would a flight TO ATL be considered a diversion if it lands at the airport it is traveling to? But DL 369 is actually travelling ATL to MGA.

Ha! Wow. It's been a long week. My bad. I meant to say ATL to MGA. I don't think I can change it, but if a mod sees it, feel free to do so

No worries at all. I think we all were able to tell you meant ATL-MGA in your initial post.

Exactly, either ADent was making a joke or he is a total je*k.

Either way, I am shocked that the flights to MGA are so "empty"  Wow! I used to fly ATL-SJO and viceversa and the flights were very full (it was a 752). Interesting

Hope that by now you are safely in ATL

Cheers!
