US Airways A330 Diverts

AWE740 diverted about an hour into its flight to Spain. My first question is does anyone know why she diverted and the second is why did she divert all the way back to PHL and not BOS, JFK, EWR, or BGR?

If the problem doesn't require immediate landing (critical failure, medical,...) best to go back to base where qualified technicians and spare parts are available to intervene as soon as possible, as opposed to say, BGR, where everything has to be flown or driven in. An extra hour in the air can save you several hours on the ground waiting for repairs to even begin.

Also makes it easier to reroute passengers when you return to one of your major hubs. And if the flight has to be delayed until the next day, some passengers can go home rather than being put up in hotels.

Mechanical issue. Passengers were put on another plane out of PHL and went from there. Much easier to do everything logistically from the main hub, as you need to recrew and get another plane; going elsewhere if not needed means ferrying that plane up to BOS/BGR/etc., and swapping there - becomes more of a hassle logistically. Not to mention easier to fix the plane at PHL than elsewhere.
