Which Foreign City Has Higher Daily Seats From UK

Sun Oct 02, 2011 9:20 pm

I was wondering in the sense of numbers, which foreign city has the most seats overall from the UK as a whole?

There must be some daily breakdown I would have thought. I guess New York or Paris must be top but with all the flights around the Uk it was something I had been wondering?

Overall in a day some cities must reach into the 1000's of seats

Just a thought.

You can see here: http://www.flightontime.info/scheduled/keyroutes/keyroutes.html the total number of flight to a certain city (from the UK).

Amsterdan, Dublin, Geneva, Milan and NY are the only ones with more than 10,000 flights in the first half of this year. But as NY sees by far the most widebodies, I think we can easily say that NY has the most seats per day from the UK.
I have no absolute numbers though, but I hope this helps a bit.

At a quick count there are currently about 35 daily flights from the UK to New York (JFK and EWR combined). Based on a rough guess of an average of 250 seats per flight, that's close to 9,000 seats a day in each direction.

I wouldn't be surprised if Amsterdam was above New York. KLM has multiple daily frequencies to what, 15 UK airports, and then there are all the LCCs and BA flights from LGW/LHR/LCY, plus CityJet/AF. Say, at a guess, that's 100 daily flights in each direction with an average capacity of 100 people - that's 10,000 people and I'm probably being a bit conservative on the average seat count and frequency.

There will be some sort of rough correlation between seats on offer and passengers carried. At this web site:

http://www.caa.co.uk/docs/80/airport...tl_Air_Pax_Route_Analysis_2010.pdf

the CAA published passenger figures on all international flights from the UK in 2010.

Check out the above site. You will find that NYC was served from 12 different UK airports. The total number of passengers carried between these 12 UK airports and NYC adds to 4,488,950.

Of the above 4.5 million passengers as many as 3,609,714 travelled between LHR and NYC. The only other international cities with more than one million passengers to and from LHR are:

DUB: 1,496,603
PAR: 1.299,727
FRA: 1,266,240
MIL: 1,137,967
MAD: 1,093,538
ROM: 1,032,872

LHR is dominant. For example over 80 per cent of all those travelling between the UK and NYC used this airport. And NYC has over 2.4 times as many LHR passengers as the next largest city (DUB). It is therefore virtually certain that not only there are more passengers between the UK and NYC than any other international destination but that more seats were offered between NYC and the UK.

Add ORD to that list at 1,138,012.

Using this site my hunch that the high frequencies to AMS could result in it offering the most seats from the UK appears to have have been correct. A quick add up brings me to a total of 6,251,342 passengers travelling between the UK and AMS during 2010 - many more than New York. I can't think of another combination of connecting and leisure passengers which could top that, not even Paris.

DXB is massive -- almost 3,750,000 pax according to that CAA document.

The only Asian contenders for 1 million + are HKG at 1,386,000 (all from LHR) and SIN at 1,107,000 (1,022,000 from LHR).

Sure you can say that those figures are fueled by connecting traffic, but that shouldn't detract from the sheer number of people who are now travelling between these hubs.

And LAX at 1,189,309.

ZRH has around 1'578'879 passengers which is quite a lot for a city with only 350'000 inhabitants. This is only from the four London airports. Quite surprised with this figure.

It's Dublin. Every London airport has several flights to Dublin every day.

The second, I'm guessing, is Amsterdam.
and with that..cabin crew, seats for landing please.
