FRA-Tokyo/China Oneway - Interesting Itineraries?

Mon Oct 17, 2011 6:45 pm

Hi all!

Does anybody have any ideas how I can go oneway from FRA (or central Europe) to Japan or China, in May 2012 (around 26 to 28 May) on an interesting / exciting itinerary, either on rare airlines or rare equipment, without breaking the bank?
Here are some thoughts of mine:

- DC10 through Bangladesh: I'm already doing this in 2 weeks, so this is out...
- 747SP on Iran Air: I'd love to do this, but can't seem to find any bookable flights yet...
- Aeroflot with a 20 hour stop in Moscow (currently the cheapest oneway I can find): the Aeroflot flights are on Airbus equipment, BUT this would give me a chance for a day trip on a Soviet plane while I'm there...

I'm looking at a budget of about 500-600 EUR for the oneway, but it could be more if interesting enough.

Any other options? Any interesting Russian airlines?

Thanks for your input!

The first idea that came up in my mind was the new NH FRA-HND route on the 787. Admittedly it's not the most exciting airline & it might not be that affordable but something to consider nonetheless.

Not the most convenient, but there is always Ethiopian via Addis Ababa. I believe they go to both Hong Kong and Beijing. It won't be anything terribly interesting, but it's a slightly unusual airline (for most people), connecting through an unusual place (Ethiopia)

Same thing with Uzbekistan Airways, where you can do Frankfurt to Beijing or Tokyo via Tashkent.

I wouldn't necessarily count on Russian aviation to be able to deliver you on-time back to Moscow, and if you have a flight that you might miss if there is a delay...that can be bad. Just my recommendation.

This is an excellent idea, I checked their web site and the flight would even have a 16 hour stop in Addis Abeba, which I could use to visit the city. Unfortunately the one way fare is 1257 EUR, which is a bit too much for me. Too bad... But great idea, thanks!

This sounds great too, their web site does not offer online booking but I will look into it. I might have to call them up.

I'd take it if nothing better came up, but just like the A380, I'll have decades to fly on that type. I'd rather go for planes that are closer to extinction!

Hi Soren,

I just thought about another exotic routing airline wise and not too expensive.

How about taking the saturday Somon Air flight from FRA to DYU, available for about 300€.
From there, there are flights on Tarik Air or China Eastern to URC, from where you could fly to anywhere in China or TYO.

Never did anything like that, was just a thought in my mind

You might try Rossiya Airline. FRA-LED-PEK
FRA-LED on A319
LED-PEK on B767

Hi, great topic!

Well, i could advise you to go FRA - SVO - DXB with Aeroflot, and choose one of the flights on the Ilyshin-96-300 that they sometimes operate for the Moscow-Dubai route. From Dubai you have many cheap connection to Beijing. You should look also for Ariana Afghan airlines, i think they fly to Frankfurt. Other option could be Pakistan's PIA.

Good luck, if i have other ideas i make you know

Hi Sören,

Transaero (UN) offers very cheap one ways from FRA to BJS via DME. The problem is that I can't find any flights on your selected dates in the GDS, are they discontinuing the route to FRA? But you may fly them i.e. from VIE. UN op by OS from VIE to MOW, then the UN 773 (flight number UN 9999 !!) to BJS. Around 450 EUR.

But besides from that, what about Aerosvit via Kiev (VV). They fly from HAM on your selected dates, but may also fly from other airports in Europe.

You may also try Hainan (HU) which flies BER-BJS and BUD-BJS.

You can try S7 through DME and OVB. You ll need a visa for that.

You may try UL via Colombo with a stopover there, price will be around 590 EUR one way and you will fly FRA-CMB and then CMB-BKK-PVG. Even cheaper from LHR.

If you are willing to fly from LHR, you can try KC for approx 545 EUR: LHR-ALA-PEK, possibly with a forced 1 day stop in ALA (visa may be required). If you fly from FRA it could get even more interesting (although more expensive) , i.e. FRA-TSE-ALA-PEK or even FRA-TSE-UKK-ALA-PEK, and Rail&Fly is free also...

You may also fly LHR-TLV (744) TLV-BKK (763) on El Al, with a stopover in TLV (or a transit there, which is absolutely doable). Interesting to HKG as well.

Egyptair (MS) from LHR-CAI-BJS.

From CDG you could get Eva Air (BR) CDG-TPE-BJS for around 595 EUR.

From CDG you could get Oman Air (WY) CDG-MCT-KUL-BJS (KUL-BJS operated by MH). Price around 590 EUR.

I'm sure there is a bunch more, but this gives you an idea... I only considered routings that can be done in one ticket to avoid you getting stranded somewhere in Russia after a schedule change and nobody will take care of you

Unfortunately MIAT is too expensive. Getting from TXL to ULN is €700. Then you have to add another €250 to get to PEK.
If it ain't Dutch, it ain't much.

But if Soren is getting a Russian visa anyway, then it might be possible to fly just TXL-SVO on them - do they still do that? A year ago they did and it was only about £100 o/w.
