Winter 2011 Rare Aircraft Thread

Mon Oct 24, 2011 3:58 pm

I think we need a new thread about remaining possibilities to fly on rare aircraft around the world. I think the last one was started almost a year ago. Let me begin the list, please add any new types you can think about.
This is not about these types flying generally (cargo, VIP, government) but where you can book a flight as a passenger.
Somebody needs to add all the ex Soviet types to this list.
Soren

B747SP
Only Iran Air remaining. The only flyable sector outside Iran is PEK-NRT, currently weekly

MD11
Only KLM remaining; long-haul flights to some South American, Asian and North American destinations.

DC10
Only remaining on Biman Bangladesh, used on Domestic flights as well as some international flights (e.g. Gulf area and HKG)

MD81
Only on SAS out of CPH, many European destinations but there is almost no way to predict one for a specific flight

MD87
Very few remaining, the best bet is Spanair (they have 2 left) as well as SAS. At Spanair, it is fairly easy to predict one from the schedule.

Fokker 28
Apart from some tiny African carriers, the only airline flying them is Biman Bangladesh on domestic flights.

Fokker 27
Myanmar Airways is the only remaining airline flying this type on their domestic network.

Boeing 747-300
I believe only Transaero and Saudi Arabian remain with this type.

Boeing 727
Iran Air (although they lost one earlier today), plus I believe some in Bolivia

Airbus A318
Air France, Frontier, LAN (soon to end) and Avianca are the last possibilities to fly this type

As per this thread The Final Day For Mesaba... (by azjubilee Oct 7 2011 in Civil Aviation) the final US Airways Express flight on a SF340 will be December 23rd. This is in line with the shutting down of Mesaba.

Also, DC-9-50s still ply the skies in the USA with Delta   They will be retired sometime next year though.

There are still tons of other Saab 340s flying around the world, so this really doesn't qualify for a rare or hard to get aircraft.

According to planespotters.net SK has already converted all their MD81s to 82s. Fortunately I was able to score the MD81 before that happened.

Will finally add that bird to my flown list in January (SFO-AMS)

You can also fly the MD87 on City Airline based at GOT.

I'm so lucky that even as I'm only 13 I've got both the MD81 and the B743. But are there many Do228 operators in the world?

JK is a good plan indeed, I had the chance to fly on EC-KCZ last month with fellow member HT.

There are one (or two ?) flying with OX on their DMK-HKG service, but sadly they're only available for charter flights

I would also add the RJ70 to the list, there's SE-DJP flying with Malmo Aviation, not sure if many others are in service ?

Good that this thread is revived!
Some additions;
Fokker 27; Myanmar seems to have withdrawn the last F-27 by early this year, although they are still flying some F-28s.
TAM Bolivia flies one occasionally on passenger flights
DC-10; Biman seems to fly the A-310 now from Hong Kong, also they get 2 777-300s this month so it will fly no more to Rome and not as much from the mid east. I was looking at a long DC-10 flight but even Dubai is now A-310 only so it seems.
747-300 is still flying with Orient Thai between Bangkok and Hong Kong afaik
727 also still flies with Iran Aseman and Ariana Afghan, plus Aerosur and now TAM Bolivia

Some types you didn't mention (but well known for readers of the earlier thread)
BAe-748; only passenger flights are with Air North from Yukon
ATP; only NextJet, domestic flights in Sweden
Nord 262; One with Malu Aviation from Kisangani, Congo (not for the faint hearted...)
Il-62; Air Koryo of North Korea uses them occasionally (at busy times)
Il-114; only Uzbekistan Airlines
nobody has ever died from hard work, but why take the risk?

You really made me faint there for a moment. I am booked to fly on Biman today in a week, AUH-ZYL-DAC, and I would hate to find this operated by A310. You are right though, as per their schedule, the DXB flight is now an A310, HKG I still find as DC10. Right now, if I look up my flight from AUH, it shows as DC10, but who knows if the schedule is accurate and if there is a last minute sub. Anyway, I really hope to find a DC10 pull up to my gate in AUH in a week. I think I'd cry if not. So much time for planning this, and then all I get is an A310. Well, at least I'd try to catch the DC10 on a domestic flight in the following days, but it isn't the same.

I looked at some SAS options LHR-ARN for January and it listed the aircraf type as an MD-81, specifically!

As for me, I have many a trip booked on many a Russian aircraft next month! If anybody wants to know about various Tupolev 134/154 routes from LED/MOW let me know.

Do228

SATA used to fly one, but I am not sure if it is still around.

Additional type:
Convair 580 still operated by Air Chathams between Chatham Islands and AKL, CHC, NPE, WLG
Convair 580 also operated by Chathams Pacific on inter-island flights in Tonga

As far as I know these are the last scheduled passenger flights on the C580.

Chathams Pacific also operates a DC3 on regular scheduled passenger services, mostly between Nuku'alofa and Ha'apai. Not sure if there is any other DC3 scheduled service, but there are plenty of DC3s around for scenic flights.

Cheers
micha

P.S.: Another RARE one is the B787 of NH - not much longer a rare one though...

Hey fellas !

Great that this link has been started again - we all need to keep tabs on what real aircraft are still flying in the general sea of plastic these days !

With regard to Biman, does anyone have any more info on what the DC-10s actually do ? According to the schedules on the website, they still serve Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Hong Kong. I know the Kuala Lumpur - Dakar service is now B737. Have you chaps any info on whether the DXB or HKG flights are A310? Am a bit alarmed as I was thinking of heading that way between Christmas & New Year and already had a 'plan of attack' but would be horrified to be bowled out with Airbus junk. Particularly after I'd endured the 12 hour Biman flight delay.......

Cheers for any help !

That would be an interesting route   Reminds me of a similar slip a couple of yearsago when I booked a SVO-Accra//Dakar-SVO on Aeroflot and the travel agent almost booked the return from Dhaka. That would have been a long overland trip...

They might list it as MD81s but I believe they have converted all to MD82s. CH-Aviation is also listing the SK MD fleet as only 82s and 87s.

Regarding 727s in Bolivia,

I flew AeroSur's only active one three weeks ago.

Quoting Tigerguy (Reply 11):

As far as Aerosur and TAM are concerned, are there routes where the 727 flies somewhat regularly, or is it luck of the draw?

It is pure luck, but I see it fairly regularly flying over my house (I am currently in LPB), the best bet would probably be to get to La Paz for a couple of days and check AeroSur's website in the morning of the day you want to fly. Then you know where the 727 is flying to. Then place a reservation on the website (up to 6 hours before departure) or a ticket office in the city. Chances are good to catch it on an LPB-CBB or LPB-VVI ride.

But AeroSur just got a new 733, so I don't know how long the last 727 will be around...

Also, TAM-Bo started flying a former Lloyd Aereo Boliviano 727 and even painted the bird in their livery (maybe an indication that this plane will be around for some time), but there is no guarantee to know that you get this plane beforehand.

Buffalo Airways use one for the YZF - YHY sked run.

While plentiful here, the DHC Beaver's & Otter's and short nose Twin Otter 100 & 200's are pretty rare outside of Canada & Alaska.

The Shorts 360 is also getting increasingly rare, 8P still operate one along with several WW2 vintage Grumman G21 Goose amphibians.

We also have a couple of Beech 18 operators here.

The ones built as a DC-9-81s were all converted to the -82 standard a long time ago. The photo database still shows them incorrectly as -81s. I am heading to BKK in a month to finally catch the OX -81s, the last operator besides LASER in CCS and a single frame with Austral in AEP.

Anyone know which routes are still operated by SAA A340-200s, and when they are due to leave?

I could only find the 2nd daily GRU flights.
