Favorite DC-10 Livery In The 70;s And 80s?

Thu Oct 27, 2011 2:23 pm

Back in the 70s, a lot of big US airlines operated DC-10s on routes most served by 727s and DC-9s, then these airlines stated to fly them to Hawaii. By the late 70s though the 80s, a lot of these airlines, started flying there DC-10s over seas. So what was your favorite DC-10 livery in the 70s and 80s?

I personally actually hated the airplane itself, though.

National Airlines with the Sun King on its tail. It's really fun to see Eastern flying DC-10's since they had, I think, the world's largest fleet of L1011's--the WhisperLiners.

I would say above all, the Northwest Orient DC-10 is my absolute favorite. It was the first airplane model I put together. The pure red tail, and the exotic name made me a fan from the start!

I remember when I first saw a DC-10 in EA colors, I was like, Eastern has DC-10s now, I thought they was a L1011 airline. Around that time, DL started to operate DC-10s (ex WA birds). As a kid, to see two airlines that had large L1011 fleets operate DC-10s, was interesting.

AFAIK Eastern got their DC-10-30s after they got their route authorities to deep South America. I believed they were three class configured too, which if I am correct, were the only aircraft in the EAL fleet such configured.

Originally EA picked them up for there MIA-LHR route. However, they were also used on the "INNER-AMERICANO routes.

Delta operated the largest fleet of L-1011's, including 10 ex-Eastern airframes.

LGW not LHR. EA was granted the MIA-LGW rights that had been operated by Air Florida until their demise in 1984. EA started MIA-LGW in July 1985 and dropped it in October 1986. EA also planned to use the DC-10s on MIA-MAD where they had obtained rights but they never started that route.

Lots of great liveries shown here!

Clearly at the top of the list for me would be the original Delta DC-10, of which there were only five.
The iconic Widget livery looked exceptionally good on the Ten. A very close second would be the
Redtailed Northwest Orient scheme, which seemed to fit the airframe so well. Rounding out the list
for me would be the original Western DC-10, with fond childhood memories of a "Spaceship" departure
from Honolulu and "Islander" service in First Class.

Yeah me too, that livery is wonderful, and exudes Frenchness.

Love the Ghana Airways and Air Afrique liveries and love the Air New Zealand waka canoe livery.

I think the one thing that we can all take from this thread is how beautiful the DC10 made all liveries.... I have been lucky to spot 5-6 DC10s still flying during my travels in 2011, and they are always a treat.

I have a soft spot for the european flag carriers' cheatline liveries of the 70's - but I liked them especially on their DC-10's
