2 Weeks In The UAE

Sat Nov 12, 2011 2:21 pm

Hello all,

I am heading to the UAE with some friends for 2 weeks in January. I've done some research and it seems this may be a little long, so I was wondering if anyone has any advice on how I can make this trip enjoyable?

I am planning to stay 3 nights in Abu Dhabi (fly in from PER via SIN on SQ) and then 11 in Dubai. However I have read making a trip down to Oman is impressive. What is there to do there? Or what other nearby places do people recommend?

All responses are very much appreciated.
Thanks.

2 weeks is over kill. I was in DXB for a day and a half and was ready to go. There is simply not a lot to do there. I don't mean to sound like a Debbie Downer. I'd plan side trips to Oman, maybe even Jordan. Perhaps do a wait and see, and find what air fares are cheap out of DXB? Who knows, maybe you could get a cheap trip to MLE or SEZ?

DXB-based FZ (www.flydubai.com) and SHJ-based G9 (www.airarabia.com) may have enticing deals.

Having been to Dubai, I'd be happy to stay there for 3 or 4 nights and explore (perhaps also having a daytrip somewhere nearby, e.g. Sharjah). If you want to watch aircraft (I only watch rather than take photos/registrations), check out Sheraton's Deira Hotel: it is truly excellent. For details: http://www.plane-spotting-hotels.com/Dubai.htm I haven't ever stayed over at that hotel, but I have visited as a non-guest.

Have you purchased a relevant LP guide? It will, of course, help in decision-making.

Agreed. Dubai is the most overrated city in the world. A couple cool things to see but otherwise a snoozefest.

I agree with both. I go to Oman frequently and love it. Muscat is a very spread out place but has some need things to see. The area around Salalah is great too, but can be a bit tricky to get to.

Lebanon is a great place. Beirut is awesome, and it safer than it is assumed to be. Worth a visit.

Cairo too...

Thanks for the response, guys. Now I'm getting a little worried, unfortunately I don't think my friends will have the money to fly to another destination but we don't want to cut down our trip. We're the type of people who could easily spend 6 weeks in Honolulu, lazing around the beach and pool every second day, so hopefully we'll keep ourselves occupied somehow!

Can somebody tell me if there are any tour companies that offer trips into Oman via bus from DXB, either a day trip, or overnight? Preferably with a tour guide.

I hate to say it, but I agree. I was really looking forward to going there, but when I left I just had the feeling of "that's it?" I'm glad it was part of my honeymoon and not the whole thing.

No idea, perhaps a local from Oman could assist.

I did a random date search for DXB-MCT flights in January and saw a few $99 USD tickets with Fly Dubai and a $144 USD ticket with Swiss (A330). Surely your friends could pony up $99 for that flight. DXB is not cheap and they will spend that with ease in DXB daily.

If someone thinks Dubai is a snoozefest with nothing to do, they obviously weren't looking very hard.

Try skiing at Ski Dubai.
Afternoon tea the Burj al Arab.
Go to the observation deck in the Burj Khalifa.
Skydive at the Marina.
Dubai Aquarium at Dubai Mall.
Desert safari.
Carting or car racing at Motor City.
A day at the Atlantis waterpark and swim with dolphins..
Horse racing at Meydan Stadium.
Camel racing at Jebel Ali.
A round of golf at any number of courses.
Beaches at Jumeirah.
Friday afternoon brunch. Recommend Saffron at the Atlantis. All you can eat and drink.
The Gold Souk in Old Dubai.
An evening dinner cruise on the Creek. Recommend Bateaux Dubai.
Sundowner drinks at Barasti beach bar.
Afternoon yacht cruise.
Fishing in the Gulf.
An endless supply of bars and clubs for the nights out..
Kayak around Palm Jebel Ali.
Fight off the hookers in The Rattlesnake.
Splash out on a night at Al Maha resort.
Dinner and drinks by the waterfront in Madinat Jumeirah.
Take an abra trip on the Creek.
Hire a car and drive to Fujeirah for a night.
Watch a sunset from the dunes in the desert.

Just a few things that came to mind. There's plenty to do if you make the effort and look for it.

2 pieces of advice:

1) Get a copy of that weeks Time Out Duabi magazine. It's a handy guide to events and locations.

2) Buyna copy of the "Dubai Entertainer". It's packed full of vouchers giving 2 for 1 deals on attractions, activities, restaurants etc. You'll save the cost of the book in a day.

Completely agree with the above. There is a million and one things to do in Dubai. whether you are in to outdoorsy activities or beaching, lounging around and Bars and clubs
January is perfect as teh weather is very good.
I would add to thelist above

Friday Brunch at the Yacht Club Dubai Marina
Evening dinner at wafi gourmet Dubai mall..outside table where you can see the fountain. order homous tabouleh Labneh with Garlic, fatoush, grilled haloumi and shish tawouk (grilled chicken) AMAZING!
skydiving over the Palm
Go Karting at motor city
all you can eat and drink Buffet at The Terrace Le Meridien(near airport) 40 E for great spread and outdoors great venue
Two water parks one at teh Atlantis Hotel and the other Wild Wadi, both very good

if you want to get away, there are other Emirates. Cove Rotana Ras al Khaimah is a brilliant resort
Fujairah Al Aqha beach resort is also good

in Abu Dhabi don't forget Ferrarri World

Any negatives are people who have been on holiday without consulting people who live there, all our visitors always say "we would never have known about these things if we didn't come with you"
