LCC In Asia

Sat Nov 12, 2011 5:28 pm

On my next trip to Hong Kong I thought I take advantage of some LCC and hop to KL or SIN, but I am a bit weary about standards on some of the LCC in particular Tiger and Jetstar. Can anyone comment on the overall experience and the state of their fleet (I know there are some issues not long ago). What about Air Asia and SilkAir?

Tiger (Tiger Aviation Pte, parent of Tiger Airways and Tiger Airways Australia, is 32.84% owned by SQ), Jetstar Asia (49% owned by QF), and AirAsia are all fine. I would not - for a single second - hesitate to fly them for safety reasons. And I have, multiple times.

SilkAir is not a LCC but rather a 100% owned regional subsidary of SQ.

I have flown all of the airlines you have mentioned above in Southeast Asia and would recommend them all, infact far better than the airlines i have flown domestically in the USA. Tiger doesnt have a very good name in the region, but i have never had a problem with delays etc with them. Great if are wanting to get somewhere with no frills on a low budget

As Pe@rson and Byronicle6 said, I would not hesitate to fly any of these airlines. I've always had good experiences with Air Asia, Jetstar and Tiger... Have a good time in Asia !

I have flown on all the airlines you mentioned so far (Tiger, AirAsia, Jetstar Asia, Silkair) and all of them are pretty decent although I'd place Tiger at the bottom. They did what they should do but nothing much worth remembering about but other airlines did something that I can remember about and leaves a good impression in me. Following trip reports for your referral -

Tiger Airways
Happy Beyond Words - SIN-PEN-SIN On MH & TR (by initious Nov 6 2011 in Trip Reports)

Jetstar Asia
Sardines In A Can - Jetstar Asia SIN-HKG-SIN (by Initious Mar 29 2010 in Trip Reports)
Flying The Orange Star Monopoly - SIN-SWA On 3K (by initious May 18 2011 in Trip Reports)

Jetstar Asia & AirAsia
Malaysia Boleh! - To Malaysia With 3K And AK (by initious Jun 30 2011 in Trip Reports)
Flying On My Birthday - The Triangle In SEA (by initious Jul 18 2011 in Trip Reports)

AirAsia
Irama AirAsia! - Kota Kinabalu To Singapore (by initious Oct 24 2010 in Trip Reports)

Silkair
Good Morning Borneo! - Where Silkair Unwinds... (by initious Oct 17 2010 in Trip Reports)

Enjoy! Do feel free to message me if you have any queries, or just reply here and I'll try answering. All airlines have pretty new fleets but I'll have to say that some Jetstar planes look pretty tired inside. However, their service is exemplary at times while it gets a little disappointing at times too. Silkair has a consistent service level, similarly to AirAsia. Food on AirAsia is great, do go for their Nasi Lemak if flying ex-KUL. Silkair has great food too, but price is much higher. I'd recommend going for AirAsia and getting the emergency exit row and pre booked meal so you get onboard the aircraft first and you also get your food first on the plane.

Daniel

MI is anything but an LCC (and their fares show it).

I also place TR at the bottom. Have had a few delays with them. They're really no frills, including the budget terminal at SIN. I would fly 3K / VF any day.

Cheers

I have paid hardly anything with TR and my experience with them was pretty positive. So, I'd say if you can avail of noticably cheap fares, and assuming convenient schedule, etc, TR wouldn't be a bad choice.

Since, I will be hauling my luggage, the only LCC that makes sense is AK on SIN-KUL-SIN. SQ is not much more expensive on HKG-SIN when you factor in all expenses and you can fly on A380. The only question still remains for HKG-TPE, but I am leaning toward KA.
- Initious I have enjoyed your trip reports - lots of hreat info and pics.
- Coal are you still in China?

Thanks everyone for your input.
