CX In Y

Sun Nov 13, 2011 12:30 am

Have just completed a work trip LHR-HKG-LHR on CX in B744. The service is great, the food is great, the girls are pretty & the IFE good but I found the seats to be AWFUL ! I'm six foot but found the seats very small, recline sliding action useless & with a bar coming through the fabric across my bum - not comfortable. In fact the whole cabin felt a bit cluttered. I flew TG LHR-BKK-LHR the week before in B744 Y and their seats are almost unnecessarily generous with space - I was lying flat with recline ! Although no PTV on both flights I still prefered TG. Just in comparison with other carriers flown recently = MH/SQ/BA/EY/QF/BR which I found all to be very comfortable. I'm almost going to avoid CX in the future - it was that bad for me I'm afraid & I'm very disappointed.

Just my experience & opinion - let me know your thoughts.

I loved them. Back in late 2009 I flew PER-HKG-YVR-HKG-PER on those seats, and found them to be comfortable enough if they're in the upright position. I agree that the recline function is pretty much useless, but as someone who doesn't sleep on planes anyway, it didn't bother me. What I was most impressed with is that nobody could recline into my space, so I won't ever end up with a TV screen an inch from my face. Legroom was average. Many people complained about the lack of padding on those seats, but I honestly thought they were fine.

I love the fixed shell seats in principle, but I will agree that the execution could be better. There's talk of CX upgrading its Y class seats, but I sincerely hope that whatever improvements they choose to make to them, they retain the fixed shells. They're a brilliant idea if there ever was one.

I tried those seats on CX on a flight from HKG to PVG. Even on the short flight under 3 hours, I couldn't bare the seats. Will never fly CX long haul in Y. KA had normal seats.

Cheers

Luckily I travel mostly for work so I get J on CX, but I have experienced the CX Y seats you speak of. I am 6 foot tall like you, and I like this. I actually appreciate the forward slide...that way, the only way I lose my legroom is if I choose to. It seems like the people I speak to are pretty split as to if they like them or not. I have actually had a full 7 hours of sleep in one of those seats with very little trouble.

Just finished SFO-HKG-CEB (both flights B 744) two weeks ago and my experience makes me avoid CX in the future unless their Y-seats are made much! more comfortable.
After 1-2hrs I could not stand the seats any longer with my butt+back aching horribly - never had such an experience before on any airline.
I´m 1.8m/6ft and the seat pitch was quite ok and the forward sliding of the seat was no real issue.

But the seat cushions were "stone hard".

Next to this the cabin crews as well as the food were rather mediocre. I was planning to add a FRA-HKG-NRT-HKG-FRA on CX soon but my experience made me change my mind (haven´t decided yet which airline now but it looks like AY or BA now)

Im 6 foot 6 tall and love this style of seat, no one can intrude on my space, plus the way the seats are moulded with a curve underneath means I can stretch my legs out better too! Yes the seat itself isnt as comofortable as other carriers, but for me, the fact that there is zero knee crushing is a winner! The only real gripe I have is the chunky airbag seatbets lol

I'm flying BNE-HKG return this week, up in J and return in Y (J is full dammit!), the return in Y is the night flight, so sure I may not get much sleep if I can't recline, but it will be a comfortable flight atleast with no-one killing my knee caps lol...I can just relax and enjoy the huge variety of movies, tv shows and music on their brilliant avod system

Oh...there's nothing to worry about it. CX has just planned to change new seats for the Y class soon as they have heard bad comments from the pax many times.

When? i'm flying CX in April and May 2012- B744 & A343 i'm after all the reviews i've read, the majority are on the bad side, so i was hoping the seats would get an update by then.

Even if the upgrade is done, they'll most likely put it on the 77W and A333. 744 and A343 are on their way out of the fleet within 7 years or so - and I'd imagine that the A343s will start leaving as the A359s come along.

Also, 744 and A343 are not due to get the new business class. Only the 77W and their newer A333s will get them. So if they won't put the new business class on the 744 or A343, chances are they're not going to get the new economy class either, whenever that comes along.
