Airport Security & Tablet Devices.....

Fri Nov 18, 2011 8:43 pm

I'm getting ready to take my first trip since buying my BlackBerry PlayBook tablet and trying to get a feel for what I should expect in terms of dealing with airport security. I've heard and read that at some airports, they do require you to take your tablet out of your personal bag (but not out of any case it may be in), but at the same time, I've heard and read that tablets can remain in your bag. Am I correct in assuming that like with most things involving the TSA and the security screening process, it depends on the airport and/or the agents at the screening checkpoint? Considering my previous experiences dealing with the TSA folks at ATL, I'm fully expecting to have something different than expected go on. What have been your own experiences traveling with your tablet and going through airport security?

Totally different at all airports with my iPad . Some say leave it in the main bag and some say take it out and place in a tray . Sometimes they want it out of its protective case and sometimes they say leave it in. No real common rule it seems. Up to the staff on the day and the airport.

I've had the same experience as OA260 this past summer while travelling with an iPad and a laptop. Sometimes they say leave it in your bag. Sometimes they say take it out and sometimes they want it out of its case as well. One time I even was in the process of taking it out of my bag (because I assumed I should) and I was told to put it back in my carry-on.

Per TSA, such smaller electronic devices may remain in your bag.

But yes your experience will likely vary from airport to airport and agent to agent.

That seems to be the consensus I'm finding on a number of sites I've found doing searches. Typically airport security for you, no consistency in the name of security.

My two of my last three trips I carried my netbook and was still asked to take it out of my bag at ATL (but I could leave it in its' sleeve), but took it out at LAS for the return flight to so to avoid being asked again even though they weren't requiring it.

Haven't been asked one to take it out since getting my xoom. Ia am well over two dozen segments travelling with it and never been asked to remove it. LAX LGB OGG SMF AUS ORD PDX SLC LAS SFO not once. As they say YMMV, its inconsistent out there.

I-pad : never had to screen it separately (out of bag) in the US and most of Europe, while it's systematic in CDG/ORY.

I've had to take my iPad out of my backpack (and sometimes out of its own sleeve too) at MSP, DTW, HKG, AMS, DCA, SEA, NRT, PSP, LAS, LHR and LGA. Basically almost all airports I've been to since I bought it.

Only at CDG was I told to leave it in my backpack. Otherwise, when I ask they always say to take it out and put it in a tray.

I never take out my iPad. I've only had an issue once at LAS with some yokel TSA agent who was an idiot in general. I've also stopped taking liquids out of my carryon. 90% of the time nobody says anything and when they do, the bag just gets re-screened - no big deal and generally more convenient for me.
