How Many Countries Have You Been In In 1 Day?

Wed Nov 23, 2011 7:05 pm

What is the maximum number of countries you have been in within a single 24h period?
a) From any transportation mechanism
and
b) Solely from flying

Mine is
a) 5
b) 4 (HKG-BKK-FRA-GVA)
733/4/5/6/7/8/9, 319/20/21, 752, 744, 772/W, 332/3, 343/6, E70/90, AT43, AR85/1, D38, D10, M82

How do you define 1 day? With all the different time zones, you should specify: 24 hour period.

In that case, back when I lived near BSL, I got 3 countries just by going to the airport: Germany (where I lived), then Switzerland to connect from the train to the bus, then BSL on French territory. But unfortunately I never flew to more than 1 foreign country within that day from BSL, so my record is 4.

If I only count overland travel, 6: I've once been in Germany, Austria, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria and Turkey in one day. That was one hell of a ride.

If you look at my post it says within a single 24h period

I think my record is five countries for both categories, since the Philippines is an archipelago and I can only get around by flying. In 24 hours I was able to go from the Philippines to Poland via China, France and Germany, and on the return via Denmark, the Netherlands and China.

Flying: 3
MIA-ZRH-FCO
BOS-LHR-BCN
BCN-LHR-MIA

On a bus ride due to the Iceland Volcano Shutdown of 2010: 5
Munich to Barcelona. Germany, Austria, Switzerland, France, Spain so 5 countries. 18 hours. But MUC did not open up for another 2 or 3 days I think. Left Munich around 12pm got into Barcelona at 6am. Flying BCN-MUC my flight was one of the last flights into MUC before they shutdown. Glad I got to see Munich great city.

I regularly travel OSL-FRA/LHR-SIN/BKK/KUL/DXB-PER, so that's always 4 countries in a 24 hour period (if I have quick connections, otherwise it ends up being over 24 hours)

So 4 countries.

With train, I traveled through Hungary, Slovakia, Austria and Germany in one day, but again, that's 4 countries in one 24 hour period.

Mine is 4 (JNB-LHR-BSL then by road to Freiburg in Germany)

Theoretically it could be 5 as parts of BSL are in France and you can cross the border either taxiing or walking in the terminal.

All my overland borders involve just 3, as I like to visit countries if I am not flying.
Italy-Austria-Germany
England-France-Belgium

3 while flying is rather easy to do.
CEB-MNL-HKG-SGN 3
AKL-BNE-LAX 3
LIM-EZE-GIG 3
YVR-SEA-LAX-AKL 3
AKL-LAX-LHR 3 (Only with a quick flying time the whole way (1040 to LAX 1000 to LHR and a 2h transit)

However 4 countries seems to take me further afield.
LHR-ZRH-NBO-DAR 4.
EBB-JNB-ZRH-LHR 4
AKL-LAX-BOG-CCS 4
Flown to 120 Airports in 44 Countries on 73 Operators. Visited 55 Countries and counting. Wanderlust is like Syphilis, once you have the itch it's too late for treatment.

A measly 3 by airplane:

JED-LHR-CDG (then continued to NRT) An odd routing but I enjoyed it.

4 by coach:

Prague-Frankfurt-Bruges-Calais
and with that..cabin crew, seats for landing please.

My record is probably 6 countries in 24 hours (Argentina, Brazil, Venezuela, Panama, USA and Canada). Sometime in the early 1980s I flew EZE-GIG-CCS-PTY-LAX-YVR after a 4-day business trip from YVR to EZE. Varig all the way EZE-LAX and CP LAX-YVR. The EZE-GIG flight also stopped at CGH (that flight on was one of Varig's two A300s operated during the 1980s.)

The Varig GIG-LAX flight (DC-10) only had one scheduled stop at PTY but they cancelled their GIG-CCS flight that night for some reason so the LAX flight made an extra stop at CCS to accommodate those passengers.

My southbound trip was on a CP Air DC-10 YVR-LIM-SCL-EZE which added two more countries in South America. That was shortly before CP dropped South America service from YVR and made YYZ their only Latin America gateway, as it still is today for AC (except for YVR-MEX).

Quoting andz (Reply 7):

BSL airport is entirely in France but an agreement permits it to also serve as a Swiss airport with a segregated "customs road" from the Swiss border to the airport. GVA is the same, with the airport entirely in Switzerland (almost on the border) with a customs road to the neighbouring French town of Ferney-Voltaire and a separate "French" section of the terminal building.

Overland: France-Italy-Switzerland
By flying: MEX-BOG-LIM-EZE-SCL so five

The AR flight was actually MEX-LIM-EZE, but we made a stop in BOG to pick up an Argentine government delegation (leave it to AR to do that). Our final destination was MDZ but LA did not fly to SCL from MEX back then and my father wanted to cross the Andes by bus. So upon arrival on EZE we connected to an SCL bound flight.

Cool then it is 5 countries in 1 day

I was sure I saw signs indicating parts of the airport in different countries, in fact I seem to remember some concessions taking Euro and some Swiss Francs.

Yes, that's correct. You have your choice of arriving in Switzerland or France, but the airport is still on French territory with the agreement previously mentioned and the segregated fenced road leading to the Swiss border.

In one 24 hour period it would be Malaysia/Australia and Hong Kong/Australia both on flights. Besides that, not many... especially considering I live in Australia

2 weeks ago returning from Asia I was in 4 countries in a 24 hr period.

Left SIN for HKG, then HKG to DOH and DOH to BCN... and yes I was a zombie upon arrival in BCN.

Other travels I have done only clocked 3 countries.

LHR-ZRH-FCO / MXP
VIE-DUS-BCN

Overland when I visited BSL, we took a tram from the city centre to the French border... we didn´t liked the look of the area so we crossed back into CH, another tram to the centre and changed to another tram towards the German border... crossed it, had a beer and came back to CH
