How To Find The Cheapest Air Canada Fares?

Fri Nov 25, 2011 11:33 am

Well I didn't expect to do this, but I ended up logging 31,000 miles this year on Star Alliance carriers. You need 35,000 to hit Aeroplan Elite (which=Star Alliance Gold), but you also need a minimum of 10,000 of those miles to be flown on AC.

So, I'm semi-frantically searching for ways to bank that kind of AC mileage before year end. (MSP-YYZ-YVR is just over 5,000 mi round trip; but it's more than $800 and I can't really spend that 2x.)

So...toward my quixotic goal - anyone have any tips for finding super-low AC fares? (As if there's going to be any between now and the end of December, I know...   )

Well, there's a 15% off all routes in North America promo going on until Sunday - it's the best I've seen so far, not the greatest sale but it'll make a difference.

The promo code is NOVSURPRISECA

You can do a TATL to Europe for less than $1,000, but that leaves you short between 500 and 1,500 miles (est) depending on where exactly you go. If you need less than 10,000 miles, that may be your best bet. If you haven't flown AC at all, you only need to find a cheap transborder ticket for the difference.

I think it is NOVSURPRISEUS for trips starting in the US.

I think your biggest problem is the prohibition of USA-Canada-USA flights, thus YVR is almost your only choice... Fancy a short trip to Europe? You can get MSP-ZRH-FCO // FCO-MUC-MSP for 888$, out Dec 7th and return Dec 12th, for a total of 888.38 USD all in giving you 9540 miles (fare class T), and you'd've seen Rome  .

Edit: the mileage is only the AC part, excluding the LX/LH rides from ZRH/to MUC.

That's the biggest problem right now. Just checked ITA and there's nothing under 460-480$ to be had from MSP to YYZ (the cheapest option), still cheaper than twice 800$ though.

Kind of an oxymoron

You can do a round-trip YUL-CPH for only $512 if you book by Nov 30th, it will put you over that 35,000 mi threshold....only problem is finding an affordable MSP-YUL flight, the prices are very similar to MSP-YYZ as referenced above.
Flying refined.

Could you break down this route into more segments? I mean fly MSP-YYZ-YYC-YVR and back? The mileage would remain approximately the same and enough to pass the 35k mile mark, while 3 segments each way would satisfy the minimum mileage/segments requirement.

Thanks everyone for the great ideas - and the great CPH tip, WestJet747!!

I think I am just going to have to be realistic about my numerous impending financial outlays, calm down a bit and patiently try for Gold status next year.

(I've been promising myself *A Gold status "next year" for about four years now...hooboy.)

Maybe to make it up to myself for the long wait, I'll see if I can tack SkyTeam Silver onto next year's travel goals as well.
