Choosing Your Seat Neighb. Trough Facebook: KLM

Mon Dec 05, 2011 2:55 pm

KLM is continuing it's innovating use of social media (in my humble opinion that is   ), they are gonna start with a new project where you can choose your seat neighbour based on his/hers Facebook or LinkedIN profile;

(sorry only in Dutch);
http://www.nu.nl/internet/2685639/kl...rman-kiezen-via-sociale-media.html

"Als een passagier incheckt op internet kunnen de profielen van LinkedIn en Facebook gekoppeld worden. Andere passagiers kunnen zo een buurman uitkiezen met wie zij bijvoorbeeld overeenkomsten hebben.

Uiteraard moeten passagiers er zelf voor kiezen deze informatie te delen."

--
Translation: When a passenger checks in through internet he can connect his/hers LinkedIN or Facebook profile. In that way passengers can choose seat neighbours with which they share similarities.

Of course passengers can choose themselves if they want to share information or not.
--
Could come in handy for networking business people. No official word on when this pilot is gonna start though.

This could be extremely smart, or incredibly stupid. I still haven't decided yet.... I like the thinking outside the box, though. One thing I am certain of is, I need a fresh soda....

Lighten up while you still can, don't even try to understand, just find a place to make your stand and take it easy

Nice idea at first, but what about people who do not spend half of their life on FB or LinkedIn, and as a result are "unsociable"? Will they be relegated to the back of the plane?

I think this will be most people. I would expect only a few people to do this unless it really catches on with other airlines...just a little something that KLM can do to market themselves. Obviously there will be plenty of people who choose not to do it, or simply are not on either website...or, heck, are even in countries where they cannot access Facebook easily (such as China)

I think this would be extremely popular with the younger male crowd, trying to get next to a young attractive lass. Will they then sell those seats at a premium?

Brilliant! I'll take the seat beside that leggy blonde who's pictured undressing herself after a couple of drinks. Interactive IFE just got a little more personal...

I think that they are trying to reach out to the younger crowd. When I visited my friend in the Netherlands they all told me that they never check KLM out because it's considered as a Business oriented and expensive airline.

Interesting.

AF/KL already had http://www.bluenity.com/ which linked users on flights. You could chat with folks on the flight you are on, or folks arriving to your destination at the same time. People often share tips and info. For example I recommended a Indian restaurant off Kensington High St. and a someone from the other side of the world had a nice meal out, which was pretty cool

This only expands on that idea.

Very good idea, young people can join other young people, same for the elderly, and most important, I hope by judging the facebook pic to choose a seatmate of normal proportions.
And, that pretty blond.....

I'd like the seat next to the very thin person. Gender is irrelevant.

And if you want an empty row, what about creating a fake FB account with an extremely ugly picture so that nobody would want to seat next to you ? Oh wait, it could work with real pictures too

Interesting. From my experience, when checking intercontinental flights from ARN its almost always that KLM is among the cheapest ones. Usually they are much cheaper then SK, LH or BA.
