LH, BA, AF Fare Strategies For USA Trip In April

Thu Dec 08, 2011 1:40 pm

Today is December 8 and I'm trying to book tickets for a family trip to the US in April 2012, from MRS or LYS to LAX on April 9 and from NYC to MRS or LYS on April 21.

The best fare I can get from AF, KLM or BA is about €840 return, which is way too expensive for that time of year. April is not the high season at all!

As for LH, I thought that we could get the early morning Lufthansa FRA-LAX flight but they won't let me have it unless I'm willing to pay €900+ return!!! For €530 return (which is a common fare for flying in April) they put us on Lufthansa's late afternoon MUC to LAX flight.

Maybe there's such a price difference because they are trying to book people on the MUC-LAX service first, knowing that they can easily sell out the early morning FRA-LAX flight later. What do you think?

I've checked the seat maps on Orbitz for the AF, BA and LH flights I am interested in, and they all look fairly empty (if Orbitz's seat maps are reliable for that sort of things).

So, do you think it is wiser to wait before I book the flights. Booking them now in December may be too early. Can we expect BA, AF and LH to lower their fares? It's for a party of five, so price will make a difference.

I very often go to the North America in April and I've never had to spend more than 600€ for a return ticket.

Any help regarding airlines' pricing strategies will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Bonjour Nico..

I will see what I can do for you, but normally the longer you wait, the more you'll end up paying. Also, what is wrong with MUC-LAX? It's on the nice A340-600s vs the shabby 747.

Merci Something!

There is nothing wrong with the nice and smooth A340-600s. It's just that the sooner we get to LAX, the better. And the MUC-LAX gets in at 19:00.

Originally, we wanted to leave on Saturday, April 7. But the cheapest we can get is for Monday 09/04.

The last two times we went to the US - both times in late April/early May - we flew with BA for never more than €550 (£470), but I've never booked the tickets in December, I've always bought them in January. Do they usually offer discounts in January?

I've been checking BA and AF fares over the last two or three weeks and there doesn't seem to be any change...(£700), no matter what day we leave on.

A cursory search doesn't show me anything below €700 either. I booked tickets from HAM to DEN the other day for €780 and found that to be kinda steep as well. But the person I booked it for wasn't cool with experiments to lower the price, nor did she want to wait any longer. So I bit the bullet and booked - on Continental at that (hate that airline).

Maybe pre-Christmas tickets cost more, like you usually pay more when you book on a weekend compared to the weekdays so maybe there is a chance for prices to drop in January?

I don't know how risk-averse you are, but I would not want to spend that much money on a trip to the USA. €800 is Australia money. I would wait at the risk of having to spend even more or canceling my trip in the end, but on the off-chance of coming across a better fare at some point. But I also don't mind ''adventures'', if the price justifies it. You could book LHR-LAX-LHR for about €520 right now, and then fly to LON on a separate ticket. But that may require an airport change, the chance to miss a flight, long lay overs, etc.

Rule of thumb: You pay for comfort. If you want to buy today and have the most convenient connection, you'll pay more. For every Euro that you save, you will pay being hassled waiting, running, worrying. If you enjoy your job, book now. If your job is worse than waiting, running, worrying.. book later. Or just go somewhere else.

I'll keep looking..

On ebookers I found tickets for 591 euro with LH and UA (MRS-MUC-LAX-ORD-FRA-MRS). I chose 12/4 as outbound flight and 19/4 as inbound flight.

You're right Something, we don't want to spend €800 on a trip to the US.

For €650, LH now makes it possible to get the early morning FRA-SFO flight, which gets in at 12:05. Last week, for €650, the only flight to SFO we could get was the afternoon MUC-SFO service. So, what's the strategy behind all this?

As for BA and AF, still not moving...

Thanks.

Maybe you searched on a different day? Saturdays show up more expensive offers than Tuesdays for instance.
Also, you might want to keep an eye on this list..

LH issues promotion codes quite often. You can save up to €40 per person.

Thanks Something for the promotion codes.

We finally booked our tickets last nigh : NCE-FRA-SFO on Saturday April 7 and JFK-FRA-NICE on Saturday April 21 for 520€ per person. NCE is a three-hour drive from where we live but that's not a big deal. Flying out of LYS or MRS would have been better but Nice is fine, flying out of Nice offers better connection times at FRA.

520€ is quite a good fare and the early morning FRA-SFO service is operated with the A380, which adds a nice little touch to our trip.

Thanks again for your help. I appreciated it.
Have a great weekend.

Glad you have booked your ticktets now, let's not forget that Easter is on the 8th April 2012, so it's sort of high season really for direct flights anyway.
Enjoy

Not quite the MRS-???-LAX you were looking for, but goes to show again that flexibility is key!

Hope you could use a promotion code (they don't always work) and enjoy your A380 flight. Hope the JFK-FRA won't be a 744

I tried one of the promotion codes you gave me but it didn't work.

The JFK-FRA ride will be a 744...The last time I flew on a 744 was with BA, in business class from LHR to LAX back in May, and I loved their lie-flat seats. LH economy class will definitely be different...

You might be in luck to get on one with the new economy class installed. I like your optimism though lol

DABVA;VB;VC;VD;VE;VF;VH;VK;VL;VN get the new cabins in 2011.
DABTA,TB,TC,TD,TE,TF,TH are slated to be phased out and won't receive a new cabin.

The 13 remaining ones will have the new economy class installed successively over 2012. So statistically your chances of having PTV, new cushions, slightly more leg room and a nicer headrest aren't too low, especially since JFK is such an important route for LH.

That's too bad! I wish I could have done more for you.
