AA 777 JFK-SDQ Bus Class W/ Economy Ticket?

Sun Dec 11, 2011 12:04 am

Hi all, Got a question about a trip I have upcoming in February. I'm going to the Dominican Republic with my family, my father did the leg work of booking the trip and sent me the confirmation. I was actually ecstatic to see that the flight is operating w/ a 777! I'd never even realized that AA was using them on that route. I go out of my way to get on a 777 whenever I can (which rarely works out!), so this made my day.

Taking it further, it looks like our current confirmed seat reservations are in row 12. Sooooo.... Did we hit the jackpot? I understand this is one of those rare flights where the 3 class aircraft operates a route that is sold as only 2 class, so lucky people get to sit in the bus class seats (obviously w/ economy service). I've heard that they are reserved for Elite members (of which I am not. We do have a decent amount of miles on AA but I haven't even entered my AA Advantage # yet, as my dad booked it). I've also heard that it can be luck of the draw.

Given that we already have these as confirmed seats, is it likely that AA will cancel those in the 6 weeks between now and then, and move us somewhere else? If that's pretty much a guarantee, then I'd probably want to front run that process and at least be able to ensure that I at least get a window seat, rather than end up getting allocated whatever seats are available that day. Of course, I'm hoping that we'll just get Row 12! I've sat in those seats a few times legitimately for work on JFK-LHR, but this would really be a treat.

Anyone with more expertise that can weigh in here? Thanks!

It is very possible that your seats may be changed as your departure date approaches. Many times when there's equipment like that on a route, the sats won't actually be blocked but auto-rebooking will move people around as you get closer. All I can say is keep your fingers crossed!! As an aside, F does VERY poorly on JFK-SDQ/STI. On the day of departure, i've seen Y oversold by 20+ with all seats open up front. Both on DL and AA. On the day of, most FFs will be moved to the forward cabin to free up seats in Y to get everyone on the plane.

With that being said, good luck!

Occasionally a glitch comes through and you'll get lucky. I can remember a few configured aircraft that sold biz seats as Y due to the odd configuration.

Hopefully you'll get a nice treat!
Can I have a mojito on this flight?

Looks for now like you hit the jackpot. Lucky indeed. I sincerely doubt AA would change your seating assignment, but it's not unheard of.

Just remember, even if they do, all hope is not lost. Ask again at check in (as peoples' upgrades clear), and then ask once or twice again at the gate.

They will not change.

It happens every time they deploy the 772 on a 2-class route. I believe only the first 3 rows of Business Class is reserved for AA elites. I can see seats available on many days (Exec Plat), but not rows 11 and 12 (which leads me to think they are available to the general public).

JFK-SDQ was upgraded as JFK-GIG become 772 (the 763 from GIG goes to SDQ) up to Mid-February.

On a side note it's similar with LH. When they changed Miami from the 747 to the A380 people holding seat reservations around row 30-40 on the 747 would get the same seats on the A380 in row 30-40 which are usually reserved for Sen/Hons/Full Fare guests. It's not Business though...
