Have You Ever Dreamt You Were In A Plane Crash?

Sun Dec 18, 2011 8:07 pm

Sleepy heads,

You ever dreamt you were in a plane crash?
I did last night. Now to be honest, I have dreamt the weirdest stuff in my life (don't ask); but this particular dream is different because a lot of details stayed with me all throughout the day.

It was more like a crash landing.
The airport was BHA in Ecuador and the plane involved was a KLM B787. (??)
All very survivable, I actually had the chance to chat with the pilot on the tarmac about how & why.
He lost power apparently....

Then later on the same "night" I suffered a runway overrun with a lot of damage at an unknown airport in an A320.
Bad night? Am I on a death-list?

Am I the only one to dream this stuff?

I had one the other day. I was on a PK 313 flying from some city. I was in a window seat and after take-off we were WAY to low, so even though it was a dream my mind was going over all the facts like were way too low for departure, this isnt a SID, why aren't the flaps down etc etc. So we finally came to stop in the middle of the street with no damage at all and I left the plane, when I remembered I had left my passport at home.

In all really weird but I remembered all the details very well when I woke up. The whole thing was quite scary I must say!

I wasn't directly involved, but I did have a dream that an AirTran 717 crash-landed in downtown Omaha. The plane was still completely recognizable (except the wings had come off), just completely charred. I don't think anyone was hurt, and people were wandering around it like it was just a car crash or something. Weird stuff.

Too often to count, but everyone walks away unhurt from all the crashes I dream of, and some of them are completely impossible (777 can't gain altitude, flies low following a highway and lands on a straight stretch).

Some of these dreams even happen in-flight.

Sometimes I guess, but they aren't that memorable. What is memorable is that just (1/2 days) before three real crashes I have had dreams strikingly similar to the actual events. As an example I had a horrible dream where a 747 over-rotated, scraped it's tail, failed to climb and crashed just after the runway. The next day an MK airlines 747 crashed in Halifax.

Well, I once had a dream that I was flying on FI flight 631 to BOS and connecting on B6 flight 441 to TPA the next day. Suddenly, when over Greenland suddenly the flaps went down and the aircraft started going straight down. I don't know exactly what happened in this dream but I just jumped when it started to fall and suddenly, I was in a B6 320 descending for Tampa Bay, Florida.
Nothing compares to taking off in an empty 757 with full thrust!

Yes, all the time.

Most of these dreams include being in an airplane that tries to take off but fails to climb. It would usually either fly through the city at a very low altitude or even keep rolling on the streets. Sounds a lot like a typical A340 flight

I have had the same dream many times, being in a jetliner trying to take off from a wide avenue in a city... very scary.
I've flown thousands of miles and I can tell you it's a lot safer than crossing the street!

You sure that was a dream? With the state of some of PK's aircraft, that was probably true...

I've never had one of these dreams surprisingly, had other weird dreams involving people (or people I'd like to meet), but I won't go into those...

Yeah, I had one of those dreams not too long ago as well, and it was somewhat eerie at how real it seemed in the dream.

I was on a United A319 or A320 in the battleship gray livery sitting somewhere near the middle of the plane in a window seat on the left side. We took off but weren't able to gain much altitude before we hit some trees. The plane came down on its belly in a field. It broke up into a few pieces and there was some fire. I survived, but there were some deaths in other sections. I made my way out of the wreckage and looked around; that's about when I woke up.

There was another dream a few years back, but it was a bit different:

I was some sort of inspector, and I walked into a large warehouse to inspect parts from damaged/crashed airplanes. They were in a very large pit that was quite deep. As I looked at the expanse, someone pushed me into the pit. I kind of floundered around for a while before suddenly going under. That's when I fell out of my bed.
Good night, and keep watching the skis. Uh, skies.

Only once, in a Flybe Q400 - no idea why, never flown on one. I remember I was at the rear (where I sat on an AB Q400 thinking about it...) and basically only the tail section was left. I was wandering around taking pictures for my flickr page when I got yelled at.

I remember posting about a strange dream here on A.net a couple of years ago. I was in a fictional Latin American country named "Suruguay" and I was flying from the capital to a city named CIUDAD BUEHLER. The airline's name was TAFAS, Transportes Aereos de la Fuerza Aerea de Suruguay. I have no clue how I came up with all those crazy names. The plane was a 727-200 Adv. and it had a dirty but stylish 70s livery of green and orange. Lucky thing I remembered the paint scheme when I woke up so I make a quick drawing of it, I love that livery!

When I boarded the plane I knew that it's due to crash sometime soon, but heck that's what I always think when I fly in South America. There was no wall between the cockpit and the cabin, and I was in row 1. What a great view! So this is what happened. The plane had trouble to take off, and during the whole flight it kind of kept going up a bit and then bumping back down onto the highway that goes from that capital to that city. It just went on like this, climb a few feet, then bump onto the ground again. This went well for a while, until it hit a bridge on the road and burst into 2 pieces so that everybody could get off easily. As always in my dreams, no flames, no casualties, not even injuries.

So anyway, I kept taking photos with my camera, but the military was everywhere to make sure nobody took any photos, but I wanted to take photos for some reason (probably to upload them to Anet). Well anyway there were soldiers everywhere because the plane belonged to the military. Strange dream right? But you're going to love the plane:

I'm finding you a little bit scary.

I've had plenty of plane crash dreams, but as others have said, there are never any fires or even casualties. I never even seem to dream about my escape from the aircraft, we just crash and then the next thing I'm outside the aircraft just...well...getting on with things!

A thread like this comes up every now and again and it's strange how many of us seem to have the "attempting to take off from city streets" dream. I know I do! It almost seems like we're just taxiing around trying to find the best place to take off from whilst deftly avoiding losing a wing or two as we squeeze down narrow streets, under bridges, past other traffic etc. And then when we do take off, power cables and the like can be seen whizzing past the windows without making a jot of difference to the take-off process! For me it never stops there though. We never climb very high, and always seem to be following some kind of major road. There are even times when we just stop in mid air while the pilots decide what to do or where to go next! When I have these dreams, sometimes they end in the crash scenario, sometimes they don't, but whatever the ending I always live to tell the tale.

The human mind eh?!

All through my turbulent childhood I had them and at low points in my life I will get them. Clearly my mind uses my little aviation obsession as a way of trying to get through to me my unconscious feelings about things.

Just last night,

I was on a Cebu Pacific (Philippines) ATR72 flight with my family and for some strange reasons, we took off from a road, during the take-off roll, the road became curvy and the captain aborted take off. I was frightened and the first thing that was on my mind was that I forgot to bring my camera and take a video, I could've uploaded it to youtube and make thousands! Eventually,we ended up on a lake, we all survived, exited the aircraft normally, got our jackets, hand luggage and I remember saying "This is a good neighborhood to buy a house."

I always have these random air disaster dreams, although most of them, I'm just a witness.

Sure have, many times - always realistic. Dreamed once about being in a mid air explosion over India, I could tell you, flight number, where on the IFE map it happened, I could tell you the rego, my seat etc etc. Any detail practically. Then my dream went all white for a second and all of a sudden I was floating above my family at the airport in AKL being told the news of my death.

I got on a flight about 2 weeks later that was the exact routing and airline, and it even turned out to be the same rego as I had dreamed. I knew it wasn't true though because I had an aisle seat in the dream...:-P

Yes, many times, over the years.

When it's a crash into terrain, usually a too-slow takeoff or a botched landing, I always end up a survivor, outside the wreckage, among weeds and smoke.

More often, it's a plunge into open water on a 747, DC10 or 707 - somewhere in the vastness of the Pacific. In these dreams, I either wake up just as the aircraft is about to hit the sea....or the plane somehow averts the crash and ends up flying a few yards above the water, when I wake.

Sometimes these dreams incorporate the terror of not knowing whether I'll be upgraded on the flight, or even get a coach seat, with me racing to different airport desks in the strangest of places to get a boarding pass that might not even be valid.

And there's the one where I'm waiting to be called on the standby list...and unimaginable aliens are taking over the earth. I've got to be on this flight to escape!

Cheers to all.

Not a dream that I was in the plane crash, but I'm an air traffic controller, the airport authority had closed one of our runways for a complete overhaul, basically tearing the runway up and redoing it completly. Anyway it had been closed about a month. I had a dream one night that an airplane needed it, I told him unable, the runway is closed. At this time there was tons of equipment workers, and half the runway was torn up. The pilot kept insisting for the runway, and I kept telling him unable, even until he was on short final I kept issuing go around instructions. This was a commercial airliner. At the approach end I remember yelling DON'T LAND GO AROUND!!!!!!!!!! Thats when I woke up sitting straight up, sweating profusly, and my wife freaking out. Apparently everything I was saying in my dream I was saying out loud, and when I yelled don't land go around I really was yelling it, and woke my wife up. I didn't go to work that day as I was still pretty shook up from the dream. Thankfully nothing bad like that happened during the construction.

The one that stands out in my mind was a dream about flying from HNL to LAX in a Hawaiian DC-9. Since the plane didn't have the range to make the flight, we went down in the Pacific. After evacuating and floating around, I noticed we were actually very close to the California coast so I just started swimming to shore rather than waiting to be rescued.

I was having recurrent dreams like this a few years ago. But every time something catastrophic would happen ie losing all engines, one time the roof of the plane ripped off, one time we were upside down in a dive; but every time our skillful pilot managed to save us. I think it's a function of my greatest fear being dying in a way I have no control over, but also my complete faith in the skill of our pilots, so thus never dying in the dreams. And I do a fair amount of segments (40-50) a year so it's not like I have a fear of "flying".
