NYC-HNL What Airline/routing Is The Best?

Wed Dec 21, 2011 3:40 pm

Thinking about a trip to HNL in November wondering what the best airline/routing would be. Not too sure I like the idea of the 10hr nonstop EWR-HNL on UA. Wondering if a connection would be better? Also whats the difference in comfort. between the UA/CO 767 (EWR-HNL) and the UA 777 (ORD-HNL). Minus any layover time is EWR-(LAX/SFO)-HNL much more flying time?? Any widebodies from LAX/SFO to HNL on UA? I'm open to other airlines but there seems to be more options on UA/CO. What about from PHL or JFK??

Well, what do you define as best? Price, service, or what?

Any widebodies from LAX/SFO to HNL on UA?

LAX= UA 763, HA 333, DL 763
SFO= UA 772, HA 333

In terms of widebodies, you could also connect in DEN for a UA 764, SLC for a DL 763, DFW for an AA 763, IAH for a UA 764 or ATL for a DL 333

What about from PHL or JFK??

Both would require a stop in any of the above mentioned, along with PHX which sees a US 752 PHX-HNL.

I'm more concerned with comfort/service in economy.

Example more legroom, better seat width, better inflight entertainment. Complimentary meals. Stuff like that.

I would fly on one of Hawaiian's lovely new A330s. They place a priority on a good soft product which always includes a complimentary hot meal. I don't think you get one in Y class even on the ten hour nonstop CO flight from EWR! So I would connect with HA somewhere.

Domestic 777 would be nice too - O'Hare on United in that case.
fly Saha Air 707s daily from Tehran's downtown Mehrabad to Mashhad, Kish Island and Ahwaz

Isn't there a new HNL-EWR non-stop from HA coming up soon?

From seat guru:

UA
772- pitch: 31, width: 18, overhead monitors/inarmrest audio, food for sale
763- pitch: 31, width: 18, overhead monitors/inarmrest audio, food for sale
(former CO) 764- pitch: 32, width: 17.9, PTVs, food for sale

HA
333- pitch: 32, width: 18, PTVs, full meal service

DL
763- pitch: 31-33, width: 17, PTVs, food for sale
333- pitch: 31-33, width: 17.5, PTVs, full meal service (if routed through ATL)

AA
763- pitch: 30, width: 17.2, shared TVs with no control, food for sale

Jerseyguy -
I am not sure you'll be "comforted" on any legacy USA airline flying to HI with the exception of HA and DL who do offer complimentary meals, entertainment (depending on aircraft at DL) and sense of comfort. It is still Y regardless.....capiche?
That said, the style of service on HA is very good and you might consider their new proposed JFK-HNL nonstop in 2012. If you fly on DL you can select 763 and A333 equipment that offers entertainment features and Economy Comfort to buy up to on international configured 763's and A333. The A333 only flies to HNL as the ATL nonstop. Watch out for connections over SEA, LAX, SFO, and MSP as you'll end up on a 757. Don't believe DL offers comp food from West Coast cities. DL code-shares with AS as well to HI, and service is good, but on a 738.
UA (and the new HA JFK service) do offer an overall quicker journey with the nonstops from EWR but others will have to comment on in-flight service.....I don't fly UA/CO....and any debate about comfort etc.
It is a long journey from the East Coast. The time change does not affect you as much outbound to HI, but it can kick you in the butt coming home....particularly with connections via the West Coast. Worse than any Europe jetlag.
Tickets in F on everyone is generally expensive to HI and if out of your budget consideration, factor in travel time and connections that can go wrong and disrupt your arrival there. I have flown to HI on the nonstop from ATL, BWI, DFW, SFO and LAX. I even did an ORD-MSP-LAX-HNL flight that wore me out, but the one-way fare was only $199...many years ago and years later felt my flight this year to SYD was easier!
If I was flying from the EWR/NYC area with no particular frequent flyer loyalty I'd pick HA, UA (for the nonstop) or DL connecting via ATL to the nonstop A333.
Hopefully you'll find a good fare to sweeten the deal as well. Otherwise, budget now and book F and wine and dine yourself to the islands!
Good Luck with your plans,
Thomas

Would this be the longest domestic flight in the US once it starts? Would be somewhere in the vicinity of 9:45 - 10hrs in time...or 4983mi according to the GC Mapper...

The UA (ex-CO) 767 nonstop EWR-HNL is by far the best option in my opinion. In Y class you can't beat the 2-3-2 767 configuration with a very low chance of winding up in a middle seat.

Unless there's a significant fare difference, why waste 2 or 3 hours connecting, with the added higher risk of delays and bags going astray, when you could be spending those hours on the beach in Hawaii?

As mentioned already, HA will be flying JFK-HNL by then, so there's another option.

As far as onboard product goes, the three clear leaders are the three longest flights, HA from JFK, UA from EWR, and DL from ATL. Sadly, UA is the only one without a complementary meal in coach.

10+ hour flights are long, but connecting to HNL is no picnic either. For you it would mean a longer overall flight time, long flights still, and the near guarantee of an inferior onboard product. That's a lot to give up just to have a break at a layover airport.

I were you, I'd easily go with HA. I've never been able to fly their long-haul product (only their island hop), but on paper it's the best available. And if their inter-island service is any indication, they are superior in that area as well.

By distance it will be the new longest, just beating out EWR-HNL. UA flight 15 will push to near 11 hours when the winds are strong. ATL-HNL can sometimes go over 10 hours too (been there, done that).

Thats what I was thinking too. New Aircraft, Complimentary Meals, Non-Stop and USB power at every seat, I think HA is the winner, only other option is maybe a stop-over for a day or two on the way back (the worse jetlag) in LAS for a combo LAS/HNL vacation.

1. JFK-HNL-JFK
2. JFK-HNL-LAS (HA) 2 day LAS Vacation then LAS-JFK (via DL or B6)

#1 is more likely though
