FRA , Airport & City Near Hbf

Mon Dec 26, 2011 9:48 pm

Will be in FRA on Thursday. We've about 5 hours between flights. Was thinking about a quick S-bahn ride to the Frankfurt HBF and finding a place for lunch before heading back to the airport.

Am I crazy to do this? Even if I am, where do you recommend near the hbf for a reasonable bite to eat?

Not crazy at all. The city is just a small S-bahn ride away. I'm not sure Frankfurt has one, and if it will still be there on Thursday, bit you might be able to catch one of the famous German Christmas markets. I'm sure one of the German members will know more about this. Can't recommend any restaurants, I have so far never spend the night in Frankfurt city; only at an airport hotel once.

They usually close at Dec 22nd/23rd.

The Hauptbahnhof area in Frankfurt is a sketchy place, right next to the little redlight district there. It's all ugly.

I'd suggest a walk from the central train station down the redlight district, right to the banking district (you walk right to the ECB building), over the famous ''Römer'', on to the downtown area with the stock exchange and the opera building. If you don't analyze the molecular structure of every brick, you should be able to do that walk in 30-60 minutes. On your way, you will pass a ton and a half of restaurants, cafes, bars, stores etc. to cater to your every need. The walk back from the opera to the central station is 2km or so, but there's also a S Bahn stop at the Deutsche Bank building (right by it) that will take you back if your feet are sore. Good little work out after a long flight and you will have seen at least the most famous sights of Frankfurt.

Take the S-Bahn to Hauptbahnhof at minimum - you can also exchange to an U-Bahn to the "Römer" Station and certainly that will be best to do as you will not only win time - you will also get to where it´s nice.

The famous Weihnachtsmarkt indeed will be closed, regretably.

5 hours is not much time though and bear in mind going back to the airport and going through security also needs a little bit of timing.

Strolling around FRA airport is also possible in 5 hrs - inclusive some nice snack/eating points, spotting points, or if shopping is on the agenda, also some good points available - if you look out for them - depending of the terminal and if in the sterile or non-sterile zone.

Have fun!

Thanks for the suggestions. I know it's not much time, but my two traveling companions don't share the love of airports/planes like I do. Were I traveling alone I would just go to the lounge and stare out the window (my usual FRA layover activity). Plus they've never been to FRA before.

I know the S-bahn/U-bahn option and think they will enjoy the experience. Perhaps just to Dom Romer, find a place for lunch, then back via the bahn to FRA.

Appreciate the help.
