Best Airport For A Connection?

Wed Dec 28, 2011 5:25 am

I'm booking a flight from DTW to CUN soon. Delta's prices are astronomical right now and I may have to go with NKS, COA/UAL, AAL, USA or TRS.

So, if all things are equal, what would be the best airport/airline combo with a short, yet doable, layover? I'd like to keep it as close to 1 hr as possible but obviously I don't want to miss a connection. I would also pick an early flight out of DTW and I am traveling in May so snow should not be an issue.

DFW on AAL
MIA on AAL
ORD on AAL
IAH on COA/UAL
ORD on COA/UAL
PHL on USA
CLT on USA
FLL on NKS
ATL on TRS
ATL on DAL

I would prefer to avoid ATL but I am thinking that TRS may not be bad because the gates are close together. I have only flew in to IAH once and it was a nightmare. I have not had to make a connection at any of the other airports. The return flight is also an issue with clearing customs and rushing for a connection.

What would you pick and what would be your minimum connection times for both legs?

I think this has been roughly covered before but I didn't see anything recent. Please forgive me if it is a double post.

Thanks,
-Jeff

Well, if you don't mind flying NK then FLL might be a good option. All the NK flights there depart from the same small terminal, so connecting should be easy. I'd would say the same for FL at ATL, big airport, but most of their gates or near eachother. I've had a one hour connections DL at ATL once as well, which I easily made, even with a terminal change.

MIA, ORD and DFW can be as easy as a breeze, or very tight, all depending on which gate you arrive and which gate you depart from. I don't have any experience with PHL and CLT.

But remeber, if you book your flights as one ticket, ie DTW-??-CUN and you should miss your connection, the airline has the obligiation to put you on the next flight.

Happy travels!

CLT is very easy for cx. PHL can be if you are on mainline a/c. Of the two, CLT is far less likely to have delays.

I've never had a bad cx experience at ORD, DFW, or MIA.

I've connected in ORD, PHL, CLT and ATL.

I'd recommend either CLT or ATL of those four. Can't help you much on the others.

I have transferred through ATL many times with absolutely no problem at all. This includes int'l-domestic and mainline-regional. I think it's very efficient. If you need to change gate areas, the underground rail is very easy. It's much preferrable to any of the other domestic hubs I've been to.

My first choice would be ORD if you're only connecting from a UA/CO flight to another UA/CO flight.

I'd also go with ATL too. Although the airport is huge, I never had any major issues with transferring, even on an international to domestic flight with one hour connection. The walk could be lengthy though, but nothing frustrating IMO>
It's a cultural thing.

ATL would be my pick, hands down.
