How Is The Ride On An A340/330?

Wed Jan 04, 2012 5:13 am

After riding on a 777 in 2011, and an A321 in 2012, from LAX to the eastern part of the US, I started to wonder, how is the ride on the closest a/c that Airbus has to compete with a 777, an A340/30?

I still have not been on a 777, so I can't make a direct comparison to that, but I have been on the A332, A333 and A343 and love travelling on them. I have not been on such quiet aircraft and the first time flying on one (especially the A343) one really appreciates the queitness.

A just recently flew on a DL A333 (AMS-BOS) and have in the past flown on the 772ER (LHR-IAH). While I really cannot compare the experience as the 777 flight took place a few years ago, I have to say that the 2-4-2 seating is much better than the usual 3-3-3 seating on the 777.

I flew on a LH A346 last month and I was surprised by how quiet it was...

I bet most travellers prefer the A330/A340 over the B777. The quietness and the 2-4-2 seating lay-out are definitely more comfortable than the 3-3-3- (or 3-4-3) seating in the B777. I love the power take offs of the B777 though.

Having travelled on A332/A333/A343 and 777, I still prefer the 777. The 777's wider cabin feels roomier thanks to the Boeing Signature Interior. Fold up bins and higher ceilings definitely add to the feeling of spaciousness. The A330/A340 is by no means cramped, but smaller windows, the curvature of the sidewalls at head height, and lower ceiling height makes the A330/A340 feels half a size smaller.

Yes, the A330/A340 has a better seating configuration, and (in the A340's case anyway) quieter, although the difference isn't much, and is dependent on where you sit.

I may be answering my own thought...But i always noticed on the 343...an odd "clunking"Clanging" while taxiing...and it was't intervals or anything...and sounded far to loud to be the center gear rolling over cracks etc. But thats the only thing i can imagine it being. I love it though...I could be blind and know every plane i fly on, by their quirky noises etc etc!

It's not the aircraft that is the deciding factor of comfort (except for the A380) but the airline.

Saudi Arabian 777 = very comfortable.
BA 777 = very uncomfortable.

The 777 is very loud and vibrates very badly so you can't sleep well.

The A330 is smoother and quieter but the ceiling in the J and Y cabin, for me, feels too low and it can feel very claustrophobic. I flew on the Swiss A330 regularly until I insisted my company take me off it and put me on another airline.

It wasn't a A330 thing but a Swiss thing.
and with that..cabin crew, seats for landing please.

Yes the A330 is a great aircraft to fly on, been on both the 200 (TCX) and 300 (US). Have not been on a 777 so I cannot compared but I'd think you would enjoy the A330.

I noticed exactly the same noise on the A330 while taxiing around AMS. I wonder what it is.

With experience on both types I would say that there's not much difference. The 777 is a bit noisier than the a330/a340, but it's not so much noisier as some people on a.net want it to be.
I personally prefer the 2-4-2 layout on the a330/340 than the 3-3-3/3-4-3 layout on the 777 because you're just one seat away from the aisle.

The A330/A340 is my favourite plane to fly on, except for the A380 upper deck.

The main reason is really the configuration, where I can have a window seat and only need to jump over one passenger to get to the aisle.

The higher ceilings on the 777 are better, and a 777 in a 3-3-3 configuration is very comfortable as well, so when booking flights, I see both the 777 and A330 as quite equal, and I might tend to lean towards the 777, as I get so many A330 flights from PER, as just about every flight departing there (internationally) is an A330.

To confirm what others have said, I flew an A 340-300 from FRA to GIG in December and I found the 2-4-2 seating to be great. Alos the plane was very silent.

I was however surprised by the time it took to get to 30,000 feet(or whatever the FL was). Also, the LH flight attendant told me that the flight to GRU, although being longer in distance is shorter by 30 minutes because the 744 is faster. I found that hard to believe, but if it is the same for the 343 vs 777, then that would be one advantage of choosing Boeing over Airbus.

I recently flew both a 777 (KL) and a A333 (AF), and I can't say which one I really prefered. In the Airbus the 2-4-2 layout was more comfortable, especially in a window seat, but the Boeing felt more spacious.

I find the A343 to be a lot quieter, especially towards the front, and much more comfortable than a 777. J on VS feels a little more cramped than on a 744 (which I prefer, especially since they removed the massage parlour and left a nice big space in the middle). I'd take either over a 777 though- I can't stand that plane.

I'd go out of my way to fly on the Airbus over the Boeing any day.

I've been on my fair share of 777's long haul, and only 1 A330 and 1 A340 long haul. But the A330/340 wins hands down for me. I found the cabin environment of the 777 to be harsh. Very dry air which usually ends in getting nosebleeds and feeling it for the next couple of days afterwards.

As others have said, the Airbus is quieter and the seating configuration is far better. Just my personal opinion of course, but I'd genuinely avoid a 777 long haul if I had the option.

As a side note, are the -300ER's any better in terms of air quality? I've only ever been on -200's.

I agree 100% and think that overall 777 is much better. It seems to handle turbulence much better as well all those squeaks and shaking of overhead bins in A340/330 add to the negative sensation.
UA 777 has 2-5-2 seating.

True. The 747 (all models) has long been the fastest airliner in service, at least since Concorde wsa retired. However I think the A380 now matches the 747, or comes very close. The 777 is slightly slower than the 747 and slightly faster than the A330/340 but probably not enough to make much difference on typical routes. I think the 767 cruising speed is about the same as the A330/340 or possibly slightly slower.

Just for info, the current AF inflight magazine fleet information pages includes the cruising Mach number of types operated by AF and their regional carriers. They show the following (fastest to slowest):

A380 - 0.85
747-400 - 0.85
777-300ER - 0.84
777-200ER - 0.84
A340-300 - 0.82
A330-200 - 0.82
CRJ-1000 - 0.82
A318/319/320/321 - 0.79
Embraer 170/190 - 0.79
Embraer 135/145 - 0.77
CRJ-700/900 - 0.77
CRJ-100 - 0.74
Avro RJ85 - 0.70
ATR-42/72 - 0.45

Wonder if that CRJ-1000 speed is correct? Why would it be faster than the -700/-900 since it's basically just a stretched version of those models?

Definitely prefer the 330/40. The 2-4-2 layout and quiet cabin makes a very pleasant ride. On the other hand, the overhead bins on the 777 are second to none. In reality both planes have their attributes which, as someone else mentioned, may be airline-dependent. If I'm on a 777 with noise canceling headphones and some good movies I'm perfectly happy. On the other hand if an SQ 345 is on offer (which it almost never is) I'll take that.

This is the brake actuation system. When the pilot hits the brake, it takes a second or two until the pressure is on the brake discs to slow the aircraft down, thats why you initially don't associate the two instances. But if you pay attention, you will notice that the aircraft slows down after that very specifc noise. Many hydraulic pumps and significant plumbing are located around the landing gear bays.

Also the A330/A340 main landing gear unlock mechanism is characteristic. If you sit above the MLG it feels and sounds like someone pulls out a massive steel hammer and smashes it against the lower airframe when the gear unlock sequence is initiated.

Quoting Viscount724 (Reply 17):

Cruising speed is also company policy. I recall some airlines reduced the Mach number due to high oil prices. This however means they are holding up subsequent traffic and the controllers are usually quite busy in re-routing the following aircraft.
