ORD To GRU: Fly UA Nonstop Or AC Via YYZ?

Wed Jan 04, 2012 4:29 pm

I have to travel to Sao Paulo for business in 10 days. I have options (with around a $100 fare difference) to fly on the nonstop UA flight from ORD to GRU or fly Air Canada via YYZ.

I have flown the AC 767 product from YYZ to SCL a few years ago and loved it. I have not flown the 77W before (ever, on any airline) which is used from YYZ to GRU at this time of year. I know that UA is using the new-configured 777 on its nonstop flight from ORD to GRU, and I will have access to Y+ seating because I am Star silver.

So, anyone want to provide me a high-level pros and cons list?

100% fly with AC via YYZ.

AC has better IFE which makes the flight seem to go by faster. That alone would do it for me. Beyond that you earn more miles and could hit Gold next year.

Also if listening in on Channel 9 is a factor in your decision I should tell you that many UA flights over South America switch this off because of "interesting" ATC exchanges.

I'd go with convenience and opt for the UA nonstop.

Also making extra connections during winter months is a no-no in my travel book.

I heard the AC flights to GRU has been heavily delayed recently, don´t knot why and don´t know if this problem still persist...

Thanks for the responses. Unfortunately, it appears that both flights arrive too late in the morning for me to make this work, so instead, I have put a reservation on "hold" routing ORD-DTW-GRU on the outbound and GRU-ATL-ORD on the return, both operated on Delta.

I know that the GRU-ATL segment will have PTVs, but the DTW-GRU flight will likely not, as it is on the 767-300. Regardless, anyone taken either of these flights (DTW-GRU/GRU-ATL) in Y and have comments on the service?

I have taken a similar one, ATL-LIM-ATL and was very satisfied, nice crew, 764 with PTV´s, decent food...

I personally think DL is always a good choice to South America. I have travelled many times to South America from the US taking DL, CO, AA and UA and by far, DL is the best on the field. They might not be the best carrier TATL or intra-USA, but US to South America: they take the prize, at least for me.

Enjoy your flight and your stay in Brazil!!!

UA's updated interiors are pretty stellar. Especially in C and F cabins.

If you wish to achieve Global Sevices for 2013 you have to fly UA/CO metal, and Y+ is always great for an 8 to 9 hour flight. If you can get into C on a UA 777 or 767, the experience is great. Better than BF on a CO 767 by far.

I don't know if Delta has an enhanced Y product.

Yes, I flew DL SJU-JFK-DTW-ORD on Monday and I loved the DL Y product on the SJU-JFK segment. Too bad I will not have that on the DTW-GRU flight but I will just try and sleep as best as I can.

Yes, it's unfortunate that this trip was scheduled very last minute so I did not have great options timing and price-wise to choose from, but in the future I do plan on consolidating to UA. Especially on their services from ORD or IAD.

Does CO have good IFE on their 767-200s?

If you are in a newer 777, then go for UA, but if you were to be put on a 744, count your blessings, no IFE there. I'd probably go AC. I've heard pretty good things recently, and I transferred through YYZ before, and it was very enjoyable.
