UK Air Passenger Duty To Rise 8%

Thu Jan 26, 2012 3:28 pm

It is not often that you get the heads of BA,Virgin,RyanAir & Easyjet standing next to each other and smiling.

The tax will increase by 8% from April, just in time for the Olympics. Tour groups will save a lot of money if they were to arrive in France and then take the EuroStar train to London. This country certainly knows how to shot its self in the foot.

It was to be expected, but I can't say many people will be happy about it (but that's usually the case with any tax increase). It's not even a green tax either, it's purely a revenue generator.

It depends on how much the Eurostar or bus+ferry is: I doubt there will be too many cheap fares during the Olympics! It may still be cheaper, but then it could be cheaper regardless of the increase in APD!

Plus, APD is only charged on departures and not on arrivals or transits, so a savvy passenger, if possible, might fly to London and fly out of Paris/Brussels/Amsterdam using surface transport.

It doesn't seem to me, at least to my untrained eye, that air pax in the UK can get a break with taxes...

Not just air passengers. The price of petrol has gone up again in the last couple of weeks, food has gone up etc etc. Basically everything is increasing except for wages!
