Time Change - What Are My Refund Rights?

Fri Jan 27, 2012 3:18 pm

So I booked a one way ticket from STR to BEG on JAT. They changed the time to 9 hours earlier, making it impossible for me to travel, due to work. The airline did not notify me of the time change, neither did the travel agent, I found it out by coincidence on checkmytrip.com.

Yesterday, BEFORE I found the time change, I booked an onward ticket from BEG to SVO which I was going to connect to. It's also on JAT. Now this ticket is useless to me as a result of the time change of the other flight.

But since I have them on 2 separate bookings, JAT will only refund the (cheaper) STR-BEG ticket, but not let me refund the BEG-SVO segment since it is on a separate booking that had no time change. But I can't fly on that one because JAT changed the time of the 1st flight, and I was never notified of the time change.

What are my rights here?

I'm not sure you have any.

it is on a separate booking that had no time change.

This is one of the risks of creating your own connections.

Since you say you did this yesterday, quickly see if there's a 24-hour cancellation policy. If not, you might be out of luck, but read the terms and conditions carefully and be prepared to argue on the phone if you think you have a case.

Unfortunately that is a trap you can get into, the airline won't be responsible for onward flights/connections, which is why it is always best to book proper connecting flights on the one ticket, as the airline has to adjust the connection accordingly as they have sold a ticket to get you all the way from your departure to destination, as sector to sector tickets are often cheaper passengers fall into this trap, pay a bit more for the connection coverage...otherwise you are on your own!

The first segment will be no problem to be cancelled free of charge.
The second one is on another ticket and therefore to be considered as a standalone trip. As said before, a lot of carriers (not all) offer the option to refund free of charge within 24 hours, hurry up and do this if it's possible. Call the agent which issued your ticket.

Otherwise you will need to ask for goodwill and explain your situation. I'm sure a few airlines will show some, however not sure about JAT. Didn't booked them a lot but when I had to call them they weren't exactly the most professional airline I dealt with.

Just a thought, don't JAT have an evening flight from ZRH to BEG, could you get there instead?

Dan you're a genius, there is an 18:50 flight out of ZRH that I might be able to catch. I'm not sure though if they would re-book me on that, as it's a different route. But I can try!
